Book excerpt: "[Elizabeth Chadwick] makes historical fiction come gloriously alive"—The Times of London From New York Times bestselling historical fiction author, Elizabeth Chadwick, comes a bundle of the first three gripping and romantic books about William Marshal, medieval England's Greatest Knight. Elizabeth Chadwick's William Marshal series is an irresistible combination British royalty, medieval honor, stirring romance, and intoxicating power. The Greatest Knight A penniless young knight with few prospects, William Marshal is plucked from obscurity when he saves the life of Henry II's formidable queen, Eleanor of Aquitaine. In gratitude, she appoints him tutor to the heir to the throne, the volatile and fickle Prince Henry. But being a royal favorite brings its share of danger and jealousy as well as fame and reward. The Scarlet Lion By 1197 William Marshal's prowess with a sword and loyalty with his heart have been well rewarded But his contentment and security is shattered when King Richard dies. Forced down a precarious path by the royal injustices of the vindictive King John, Marshal teeters on a razor-thin line of honor that threatens to tear apart the very heart of his family. For the King's Favor When William Marshal's peer, Roger Bigod arrives at King Henry II's court to settle a bitter inheritance dispute, he becomes enchanted with Ida de Tosney, young mistress to the powerful king. A victim of Henry's seduction and the mother of his son, Ida sees in Roger a chance to begin a new life. But Ida pays an agonizing price when she leaves the king, and as Roger's importance, their marriage comes under increasing strain. This bundle is the perfect introduction to a riveting historical series by the master of medieval fiction. Elizabeth Chadwick's novels will delight fans of Phillipa Gregory, Diana Gabaldon, Susanna Kearsley, and Hilary Mantel. Praise for Elizabeth Chadwick: "Picking up an Elizabeth Chadwick novel is like having a Bentley draw up at your door: you know you are in for a sumptuous ride."—Daily Telegraph "Chadwick's research is impeccable, her characters fully formed, and her storytelling enthralling."—Historical Novel Review "A star back in Britain, Elizabeth Chadwick is finally getting the attention she deserves here."—USA Today

Book Blue Bayou Days The Summer of 61

Download or read book Blue Bayou Days The Summer of 61 written by G. Artie Whitlow and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-09-21 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The Summer of 61” was the title of a song sung by the "Boss" himself, Bruce Springstein. Now it is the title of a book written by an author in the Blue Bayou Country of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. If you want a murder mystery don't read this book. However, if you like the mysteries of life this is the book for you. Did Skeeter ever marry his childhood sweetheart? This is a true to life love story not only between friends and family but of the love of life itself. The “Summer of 61” is just that, a summer in a boys life. A summer filled with the dreams, the hopes, and all the anticipations of a young lad envisioning his future. It is also a reflection, under those marshmallow skies of Louisiana through kaleidoscope eyes of an earlier life. The novel is stimulating, interesting, mixture of fact and fiction about dreams that never did quiet make it to reality. To me it was also a self-help book. It will make you snicker, bring a tear to your eye, and perhaps a wake-up call to reality. Reading this book gave me the opportunity to know the author just a little bit better. It also made me realize that today my dreams in life have changed. Where once I dreamed of becoming an award winning Journalist, today I dream of making a 2,000-mile trip to throw my arms around my son's neck and to make some memories with my grandchildren. I don’t live in Louisiana. I live in Canada. The book shows that no matter who we are or where we live, we are so similar and so are our needs. The novel is about family, love, life, and dreams. You can’t read “The Summer of 61” without being changed. Linda Shirley- Canada

Book excerpt: There’s no such thing as love at first sight… but it’s just as well—lust is way more fun. It’s my mother’s wedding coming up, and the only thing worse than the bridesmaid dress I’m expected to wear is knowing that my ex is going to be there. Two years ago, he asked me to marry him, and I hightailed it the hell out of there. Now, he will either: 1) still be hung up on me, or 2) he’ll have a gorgeous woman on his arm. I can’t decide which is worse. Either way, it’s going to be hella awkward. I know exactly what I need… a fake date—someone to make me look like I’m not a total failure at love. My sister’s best friend is the perfect candidate. Panty-melting gorgeous, smart, and single—and it just so happens that he’s already on the guest list. Whether or not he’ll agree to play pretend is another matter altogether. We have history, but he wasn’t interested in the kind of fun I had to offer. Maybe this time will be different. With the right incentive, he’ll see this little game can benefit both of us. No strings attached, of course. Because lust is all fun and games until someone falls in love.

Book excerpt: Superpowers have turned out to be a disappointment. Heat vision? Super strength? Flight? They are nowhere to be found. Instead, powers like photosynthesis or the ability to spontaneously change hair color seem to be the best the world can offer. To make matters worse, the gifted individuals tend to suffer from psychological issues. Nonetheless, in hopes of finding enough functional meta-humans to form a squad, in 1965 the US military created The Guardian Project. The head of the Army's current incarnation of the project hires Dr. Adam Aiken, a psychologist specializing in the meta-human condition, to filter out the most dangerously unbalanced of the prospective super-soldiers. The screening process is to be done with all possible secrecy. This proves to be more easily said than done. A misfiring superpower leaks news of the recruitment effort to the public, attracting a flood of misfit meta-humans from around the nation, each hungry for heroic validation. A sleazy PR officer knows publicity when he sees it and converts the secret program into a nationally broadcast competition with all of the dignity and grace of a reality show. The ultimate prize is a coveted spot on a government sanctioned super team. The Other Eight follows the exploits of the applicants deemed sane enough for consideration. On one side are earnest but underpowered heroes like the twitch-inducing Nonsensica or the fluorescent tube-hurling Phosphor. On the other are the better equipped but less dedicated recruits like walking good luck charm Johnny on The Spot and seed-spitting loose cannon The Hocker. Who will win a place on the team, and what will be done about the jilted heroes who didn't make the cut?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This delectably intriguing new series debut from one of the queens of cozy mysteries features a caterer who crafts literary-themed dinner parties—and must ensure that a killer gets their just desserts . . . It’s a truth universally acknowledged that a genuinely top-notch party must be in want of a theme. Allie Catt, caterer and personal chef in the beautiful mountain community of Asheville, North Carolina, has devised a winning formula by using her clients’ favorite books as inspiration. Her first themed event is based on Pride and Prejudice (Allie’s cat, Darcy, approves), and it’s so popular that soon she has grand ideas for future parties based on Rebecca, The Great Gatsby, Babette’s Feast and more. Business is booming, and a rival catering company is fuming. But there’s a sting in the tale when the aunt of one of Allie’s clients and best friends, Tegan, is murdered. Tegan is the victim’s sole heir, and quickly becomes the main suspect. Allie has no doubts about her friend’s innocence, but how to prove it? Once again, her love of literature comes to the rescue, and with some guidance from her favorite fictional detectives, including Hercule Poirot and Sherlock Holmes, Allie sifts through the clues. With a little luck—and the kind of pluck that would make Elizabeth Bennett proud—she may be able to stop a killer from serving up a second course of murder . . .
