Book Where a Wave Meets the Shore

Download or read book Where a Wave Meets the Shore written by Kathryn Guare and published by Kiltumper Close Press. This book was released on 2020-01-25 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tale as heartwarming and bright as the Emerald Isle itself. When a stranger from Dublin comes to his coastal village looking for a boat ride to the Great Blasket Island, Tom McBride isn’t anxious for the job. He has enough to handle, working the farm that will one day be his inheritance, and dealing with a contentious father who’s threatening to withhold it. The stranger is hard to refuse, though; he’s on a mission from the prime minister. Tom agrees to the trip, curious about the government’s interest in such a desolate spot. Rising from the sea like a mountain, the Great Blasket is a place of legends, its people mysterious and strange. Steering his uncle’s fishing boat towards it, Tom thinks he’s prepared for whatever it has to offer, but nothing could prepare him for Brigid O’Sullivan. Dark-eyed and raven-haired, Brigid is the only young woman left among the aging inhabitants of her tiny Blasket village. With most of its population lost to emigration or the unforgiving sea, the island has grown more isolated and its way of life ever more dangerous. The Irish government plans to evacuate everyone to the mainland, but Brigid refuses to give up on her home. For her, the Blasket is a place of magic and power. She thinks its wild isolation fits with her own strange spirit and that she is better off where she is, but from the minute he lays eyes on her, Tom is determined to convince her otherwise. Irresistibly drawn to him, Brigid soon finds herself torn between the solitary life she thought she wanted and the one offered by the man she loves. Both choices come with loss and grief attached, but when tragedy strikes, changing everything in an instant, she discovers the greatest heartbreak could be never getting to choose at all.

Book excerpt: Wave watchers around the world know that no two waves are the same. Yet each and every wave that rises, peaks, and crashes onto the beach is generated by a much larger force originating thousands of miles away. Surf journalist team Evan Slater and Peter Taras capture the essence of waves and the swells that produce them in this breathtaking collection of wave photography. Slater characterizes four distinct swells from different corners of the globe and traces their journeys throughout the year from storm to seashore. His reflective, informative essays amplify these powerful images of hundreds of waves frozen in time, beautiful, simple, universal, yet wholly unique—and the best thing to watch on the planet.

Book Introduction to the Physics of Waves

Download or read book Introduction to the Physics of Waves written by Tim Freegarde and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-11-08 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Balancing concise mathematical analysis with the real-world examples and practical applications that inspire students, this textbook provides a clear and approachable introduction to the physics of waves. The author shows through a broad approach how wave phenomena can be observed in a variety of physical situations and explains how their characteristics are linked to specific physical rules, from Maxwell's equations to Newton's laws of motion. Building on the logic and simple physics behind each phenomenon, the book draws on everyday, practical applications of wave phenomena, ranging from electromagnetism to oceanography, helping to engage students and connect core theory with practice. Mathematical derivations are kept brief and textual commentary provides a non-mathematical perspective. Optional sections provide more examples along with higher-level analyses and discussion. This textbook introduces the physics of wave phenomena in a refreshingly approachable way, making it ideal for first- and second-year undergraduate students in the physical sciences.

Book Atmospheric Tidal and Planetary Waves

Download or read book Atmospheric Tidal and Planetary Waves written by Hans Volland and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to the space age, meteorologists rarely paid particular attention to the height regions above the tropopause. What was known about the upper atmosphere above about 100 km came essentially from ionospheric and geomagnetic research. The region in between, presently known as the middle atmosphere, was almost terra incognita above the height reachable by balloons. It was space research that allowed for the first time direct access to middle and upper atmospheric heights. About 40 years ago, Sidney Chapman coined a new word 'aeronomy' to describe the study of these two height regions. When asked about the difference between aeronomy and meteorology, he allegedly replied: 'it is the same as between astronomy and astrology' . This mild irony indicates the preferred prejudice of many ionospheric physicists and geomagneticians in those days toward meteorology as a descriptive rather than an exact science, in spite of the presence of such giants as Carl Rossby and Hans Ertel.

Download or read book The Outermost House written by Henry Beston and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2024-01-01 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic nature memoir of Cape Cod in the early twentieth century, “written with simplicity, sympathy, and beauty” (New York Herald Tribune). When Henry Beston returned home from World War I, he sought refuge and healing at a house on the outer beach of Cape Cod. He was so taken by the natural beauty of his surroundings that his two-week stay extended into a yearlong solitary adventure. He spent his time trying to capture in words the wonders of the magical landscape he found himself in thrall to. In The Outermost House, Beston chronicles his experiences observing the migrations of seabirds, the rhythms of the tide, the windblown dunes, and the scatter of stars in the changing summer sky. Beston argued: “The world today is sick to its thin blood for the lack of elemental things, for fire before the hands, for water, for air, for the dear earth itself underfoot.” Nearly a century after publication, Beston’s words are more true than ever.

Book Ecological Systems of the Geobiosphere

Download or read book Ecological Systems of the Geobiosphere written by Heinrich Walter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Volume 1 of this four-volume series, ecological problems of a general nature were discussed from a global point of view. Familiarity with this is essential for a full understanding of the more specialized treatment in this and subsequent volumes, for no similar approach is to be found in other ecological handbooks for beginners. This present volume deals in detail with the special ecological relation ships of the tropical and subtropical zonobiomes I to III. Most ecologists proceed from the basis of their experience in the temperate zones of the northern hemisphere. As a result, many ecological writings show a certain one-sidedness and there is a danger that generalizations made will not be broadly applicable. To avoid this, particular emphasis is laid, in this vol urne, on the special ecological features and the characteristics of the trop ical and subtropical regions. More specifically, we deal not only with the relationship of the euclimatope to zonal soils and zonal vegetation, but also pay attention to azonal conditions shown in pedobiomes and in the altitudinal belts of mountains, the orobiomes. In this and the subsequent volumes the same simple scheme is followed in treating each zonobiome: 1. climate; 2. soils; 3. producers; 4. consum ers; 5. decomposers; 6. ecosystems; 7. sub division into biomes; 8. oro biomes; 9. pedobiomes and 10. zonoecotones. Where it has appeared expedient, however, we have occasionally deviated from this scheme (see Deserts D, F, G and H).
