Book Hatchery based seed production of the Japanese scallop Mizuhopecten yessoensis

Download or read book Hatchery based seed production of the Japanese scallop Mizuhopecten yessoensis written by Sarkis, A., Lovatelli, A. (ed.) and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-06-27 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide is intended as a standalone practical manual for the culture of the Japanese or Yesso scallop, Mizuhopecten yessoensis. It is written for hatchery staff as a reference for daily operating procedures and for developing a site-specific and resource-specific seed production strategy. To that end, the whole production cycle is addressed, from broodstock conditioning to transport of seed to the farm. It is the aquaculturist’s decision as to whether all stages are required to achieve the target production in a given site and hatchery facility. Standard and more recent emerging techniques are included where possible, for the equal benefit of low and high technological operations. The manual starts with a brief overview of the anatomy and morphology of the scallop and describes the main organs of the adult specimen and the stages of its life cycle; the anticipated development time between each stage throughout its culture is added for the aquaculturist’s benefit. This is followed by a chapter on the culture of live microalgae for food; different approaches to culturing large-scale microalgae are given, including traditional batch culture to the more recent newly designed photobioreactors. Protocols are given from stock to intermediate microalgal cultures for the inoculation of large-scale vessels. The integration of probiotic bacteria as an alternative to standard antimicrobial drugs is described in a separate chapter; this is a critical component of this manual as it is a current and important shift in sustaining optimal larval and spat performance. The need for biosecurity in a full cycle hatchery operation is emphasized and conceptually illustrated. The culture protocols for scallops start with the holding and conditioning of broodstock; assessments of the gametogenic stage, the manipulation of holding temperature to maintain and/or enhance gametogenesis and food requirements are all discussed to ensure the supply of broodstock for spawning when needed. Larval culture is one of the longest chapter of this manual and describes rearing in both static and flow-through systems with the expected growth and survival rate for the Japanese scallop. Post-larval culture in the nursery chapter is divided into early post-set up to Day-14, rearing of 1 mm spat and raising seed up to 5 mm or more in a land-based environment. The final chapter discusses different strategies affecting the time and size at which seed are transferred out of the nursery facility to either intermediate outdoor nurseries or to the farm sites.

Book Molluscan Shellfish Farming

Download or read book Molluscan Shellfish Farming written by Brian Spencer and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the world’s population and the demand for seafood increase, the production of seafood from aquaculture has also seen massive increase and is set to continue. With wild stocks of many molluscan species depleted, aquaculture is firmly recognised as the means now, and for the future, of bridging the gap between the supply and demand of seafood. This important book covers the general biology of bivalves, hatchery culture methods and specific and comprehensive details of the cultivation of many commercially important species, including clams, oysters, mussels, scallops and abalone. Based on the author’s extensive experience and hands on research into this subject, Molluscan Shellfish Farming provides essential information for all involved in the culture of molluscs. The book will be particularly useful for aquaculture personnel on working fish farms and in academic research posts. Libraries in all universities and research establishments where aquaculture and biological sciences are studied and taught should have copies of this book available. Part of this book is based on a Buckland Lecture, sponsored by the Buckland Trustees

Book Giant Scallop Aquaculture Development Planning Report

Download or read book Giant Scallop Aquaculture Development Planning Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The giant scallop is a native species that lives on sandy-muddy bottom in depths to 200 metres or more throughout the east coast of Canada. It has been the subject of a traditional fishery for many decades, but recent development in culture techniques indicate it could be a candidate for a culture industry. This report describes site criteria, seedstock, technology and research, processing and marketing, financial aspects, training, and habitat for the proposed culture industry as well as a short description of the reasons for proposing development.

Book A Preliminary Assessment of Aquaculture Potential for Sea and Bay Scallops in the Annapolis Basin

Download or read book A Preliminary Assessment of Aquaculture Potential for Sea and Bay Scallops in the Annapolis Basin written by Canada/Nova Scotia Economic Regional Development Agreement. Fisheries Subagreement and published by [Halifax, N.S.] : The Department. This book was released on 1988 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently scallop aquaculture in Nova Scotia is well below commercial levels and collection of sufficient numbers of spat and cost effective grow-out technology are impeding cultivation of the sea scallop. The Annapolis Basin lies adjacent to one of the world's most productive scallop fishing areas. This study evaluates sea scallop spat collection in the Annapolis Basin. It also assesses this area for suspended culture of sea scallop and bay scallop.
