Book The Ancestors and Descendants of John Lewis Benson and His Sisters and Brother

Download or read book The Ancestors and Descendants of John Lewis Benson and His Sisters and Brother written by Ned Harold Benson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-09-27 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Lewis Benson, born in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, was an 8th generation descendant of John Benson, who arrived in America at Plymouth Colony on 11 April 1638 on the ship "Confidence." After being reared in Chautauqua County, New York, John Lewis Benson's father, William, took him to Rock Island County, Illinois, following his daughters who had already made the migration. Shortly after reaching his majority, John Lewis Benson went to "Bleeding Kansas" as part of the wave of Abolitionists who sought to "keep Kansas free," which action reflected the devout Puritan Calvinism of his Benson forebears. He enlisted in the 5th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry two months after the first canon was fired on Fort Sumter, and served until the end of the War of Rebellion, being mustered out on 22 June 1865. He then returned to Kansas where he prospered, married, and fathered 5 children. He lost all his worldly possessions due to drought and the economic collapse following The Panic of 1873, and then moved about Kansas seeking a new start. During this difficult period, his wife died, leaving him a widower with 4 children ages 6 to 11. He soon married a divorcee who brought her 3 children, ages 1 to 3, to the marriage. In his second marriage, John Lewis fathered three more children. After the Unassigned Lands of Oklahoma Territory were opened for settlement in 1899, John Lewis and his blended family moved there and share-cropped 40 acres southeast of Guthrie, Oklahoma, which he eventually bought. He died on this farm on 23 March 1906. This book by one of his great-grandsons tells the story of his life, the lives of his five sisters and one brother, and their ancestry back to 16th century Oxfordshire, England.

Book What s in the Water

Download or read book What s in the Water written by Velma Benson Wilson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-11 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To most people, one's mother is the first person they ever form a lifelong bond with. She is the source of life and nourishment, love and compassion, and the person who provides the foundation for an individual's worldview and core values. Author and veteran sociologist Velma Benson-Wilson pays tribute to her mother, a remarkable woman born Fannie Bradley, through a book titled, What's In The Water? Imagine a mother of seventeen living children, all single births and the majority born during the tumultuous times of the 1950s and 60s in rural Mississippi. How did she balance and cope with their spiritual, educational, financial and overall upbringing to insure that all became productive members of this society? Fannie Bradley had tenacious faith, resilience, and perseverance in overcoming adversities and pain that would have made most an indignant human being. Fannie's mother was mentally retarded; she had no stable father figure or family, and an elementary education. Although she only lived to be 57 years of age, Fannie's legacy of love and parental principles are indelible in each of her living seventeen offspring. Book Event: I have a book signing scheduled for Saturday, February 11, 2012 form 11:00 a.m. to 12 noon at Jackson Madison County Library, Jackson, Tennessee.

Book Our Exodus Story

  • Release : 2023-07-06
  • ISBN : 1666782815

Download or read book Our Exodus Story written by Robert P. Vande Kappelle and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-07-06 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every person has an exodus story, a vast, complex, multilayered spiritual journey. On the one hand, it is a biological journey from birth to death, and a social journey from infancy to adulthood. In this regard, it is a story of growing up, of leaving home and taking risks, of making mistakes and learning from them, of reaching goals and surpassing them. Our Exodus Story speaks of human life as a gossamer bridge that binds us as people with God, others, and with our inner being. This journey of faith is described as a "holy balancing act" between the three sources of authority for people of faith--experience, Scripture, and tradition. Bonded umbilically to one another and to God, each of us bears exodus-like and cross-like experiences. Personality and spirituality are deeply interrelated, so much that neither function adequately apart from the other. Though not identical, they strive to be in sync, balancing one another in profound and intimate ways. Personality takes the lead, and where personality goes, spirituality follows, though not blindly or passively. Spirituality has its own voice, and when its desires are addressed and heeded, personality thrives. This book is unique in that each of its four protagonists exhibits distinct dominant personality characteristics, their experiences bearing archetypal relevance and universal appeal. Their stories, individual and combined, are epic, the protagonists and families as complex as their biblical patriarchal and matriarchal counterparts, yet as current as today's top stories. As you read, you are invited on your own inner journey to peace, wholeness, and well-being.
