And Other Poems, Vol. 5 On the topmost round of the ladder of Fame, I see a glittering prize. And on that round I would scribe my name, And to its summit rise. But oh, the climbing is so hard, It makes me dizzy and faint; Sometimes I think I will give it up The struggle 18 so great. The ladder is steep and slippery too, And the climbing wearies me. Book excerpt: A hilarious collection of poetry by dogs—the perfect gift for lovers of literature and pups alike. “Dogs seldom make passes At dogs passing gasses.” Are these the words of Dorothy Parker? Ogden Nash? Nope, the author is Sparky from Milton, Pennsylvania. Sparky, Snowy, Tucker, Louie, these canine laureates have written a volume of poetry displaying the brilliance and wit we've always suspected our dogs were hiding from us. They also, it turns out, revere the human geniuses who came before them, as you’ll see with “There Is No Frigate Like A Pavement”—an homage to Emily Dickinson—and “Do Not Go Gentle.” Yes, Dylan Thomas would love it.

Book Recovered Yesterdays in Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book Recovered Yesterdays in Literature Classic Reprint written by William A. Quayle and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recovered Yesterdays in Literature In Shakespeare was an abundant love of life. The vital streams had not run dry in the channels of his spirit, rather were in spring freshet, overflowing the banks and inundating meadow lands and fields. When Shakespeare touches us we feel a vital shock, as if an electrode of the lightning had, in passing, grasped our wrists. He is no dyspeptic, with hung head and dolorous voice and mendacious replies and invective speech. He does not rage as Walter Savage Landor did, is not bellicose with sword at play as Shelley was, nor mild and remote as Wordsworth. He was impassioned as the storm, but sane and wholesome; he was like contact with the earth. Charles Lamb - pale, slender, cloaked, nervous, stammering, playful, a delightful sort of human kitten, on his way now from the East India countinghouse to his half-mad, crabbed old father and Mary his sister, with insanity haunting her eyes - is loitering a moment buying at the Strand a volume of old plays and hiding it like a miser's treasure beneath his cloak. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Walt Whitman: Yesterday Today In columns of bantering comment, after parodying his style of all-inclusiveness, the United States Review (i 8 5 5) characterizes Walt Whitman thus: No skulker or tea-drinking poet is Walt Whitman. He will bring poems to fill the days and nights - fit for men andwomen with the attributes of throbbing blood and flesh. The body, he teaches, is beautiful. Sex is also beauti ful. Are you to be put down, he seems to ask, to that shallow level of literature and conversation that stops a man's recognizing the delicious pleasure of his sex, or a woman hers? Nature he proclaims inherently clean. Sex will not be put aside; it is the great ordination of the universe. He works the muscle of the male and the teeming fibre of the female throughout his writings, as wholesome realities, impure only by deliberate inten tion and effort. To men and women, he says, you can have healthy and powerful breeds of children on no less terms than these of mine. Follow me, and there shall be taller and richer crops of humanity on the earth. From Studies among the Leaves, printed in the Crayon (new York, this extract may be taken With a wonderful vigor of thought and intensity of perception, a power, indeed, not often found, Leaves of Grass has no identity, no concentration, no purpose it is barbarous, undisciplined, like the poetry of a half civilized people, and as a whole useless, save to those miners of thought who prefer the metal in its unworked state. Book Echoes of Other Days Classic Reprint

Download or read book Echoes of Other Days Classic Reprint written by Howard Glyndon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Echoes of Other Days Laura Catherine Redden Searing, known to the literary world as "Howard Glyndon," was gifted at birth with the soul of a poet. Life laid an apparent handicap upon her in early childhood when depriving her of her hearing; but, instead of allowing that misfortune to hamper her progress, she verily made it a blessing. Living as it were in a world of silence, she voiced her thoughts with poetic vision, gladdeing the hearts of those in sorrow, uplifting the weary and discouraged, and holding aloft the beacon light to light others on to success, exemplifying to the world that earnest endeavor is not in vain. Born in Somerset County, Maryland, February 9, 1840, she traces her lineage through her maternal grandfather to Sir William Waller, one of the original proprietors of Mary land, and farther back to Edmund Waller, the celebrated wit and poet of the days of Cromwell and the Restoration. Her ancestry is in close collateral line with that of the "great and good John Hampton," and her poetical inspiration and patriotic fervor came to her from direct sources. In early childhood her parents moved to Missouri, and it was while very young that she was afflicted with the illness which darkened her life. Her own account of that period follows, and tells its tragic story with a characteristic directness. "How I Learned To Talk Again." Losing the Voice in Childhood and Recovering It in Womanhood - An Articulation School - The Experience of "Howard Glyndon." (Written for the Evening Star, April 19, 1884.) I became deaf suddenly when about eleven years old from acute disease, or rather from a complication of acute diseases. I had up to that time, with the exception of an attack of ague in the preceding fall, been accounted an unusually healthy child, not having been confined to my bed by any sickness since infancy. Download or read book Shadows of Yesterday Classic Reprint written by Charles Gifford Orwen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shadows of Yesterday It is not my intention to palliate in any n ay the faults of this book, which are only too evident; nor would I claim any fixed purpose in presenting it to the public. However, some slight explanations may be not altogether misplaced: in Jupiter Fallen, it will be seen that the Greek Mythology has been hinted at rather than employed. Still, an interest will always linger about this subject as about no other. Its strength is the strength of the Titans themselves, and its delightful dream life is unparalleled. I have chosen therefore rather to leave it in a dim perspective, than imitate what is unapproachable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
