Cave men had to compete with all animals for shelter and food. He depended on the ability of other creatures to survive. This made him one of the deadliest of animals. He showed no mercy. He kiled to borrow what he could not produce. Animals produce fur, to keep them warm. Man had to take the furs from animals to survive. He also had to take their meat, bones, and innards. In Spring wild green things sprouted and grew. Man learned to sort and use these. Some leery, more careful people began to notice medical properties of these plants They remembered these properties. Soon others of the clan became dependent on these people who could remember what to use for this or that ailment. They became the Shaman. Their job became as important as the hunter. Salt became an important commodity in the later Ice Age. Man crave it. If you had salt, you could trade it for meat, furs, and weapons. But if they had nothing to trade, then they would revert to borrowing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ayla, the heroine first introduced in The Clan of the Cave Bear, is known and loved by millions of readers. Now, in The Plains of Passage, Ayla’s story continues. Ayla and Jondalar set out on horseback across the windswept grasslands of Ice Age Europe. To the hunter-gatherers of their world--who have never seen tame animals--Ayla and Jondalar appear enigmatic and frightening. The mystery surrounding the woman, who speaks with a strange accent and talks to animals with their own sounds, is heightened by her uncanny control of a large, powerful wolf. The tall, yellow-haired man who rides by her side is also held in awe, not only for the magnificent stallion he commands, but also for his skill as a crafter of stone tools, and for the new weapon he devises, the spear-thrower. In the course of their cross-continental odyssey, Ayla and Jondalar encounter both savage enemies and brave friends. Together they learn that the vast and unknown world can be difficult and treacherous, but breathtakingly beautiful and enlightening as well. All the pain and pleasure bring them closer to their ultimate destination, for the orphaned Ayla and the wandering Jondalar must reach that place on earth they can call home. As sweeping and spectacular as the land she creates, Jean M. Auel’s The Plains of Passage is an astonishing novel of discovery, danger, and love, a triumph for one of the world’s most original and popular authors. Book excerpt: Set in a Medieval background, Atoned is a story of love, murder, revenge, and atonement. Darias, son of a high-ranking Northern Realm Wolf Lord, has been betrothed since childhood to Keara, who is from a noble Southern Realm family. Dreading the forthcoming marriage that will be thrust upon him, Darias would much rather be wed to his childhood sweetheart, the sly Rowena. His dismay turns to delight upon hearing Keara and her family have been treacherously murdered by outlaws. However, Keara’s body is not found amongst the dead. Mercenaries hired by her grandfather, who has never given up hope, locate Keara years later. The soldiers, paid a handsome sum in gold by a shadowy figure to do away with Keara, double-cross the individual and return Keara safely to her grandfather in the Southern Realm. Much to the displeasure of both Darias and Keara, the marriage contract between the two has remained valid and, to their displeasure, are forced to marry against their will. Bitterness and hatred turn into a flaming brand of passion only to be marred by uncertainty as villages are plundered by mysterious outlaws, assassination attempts on both and, the persistent return of the wily Rowena, who continuously attempts to seduce Darias, and will stop at nothing to have him. When Keara is kidnapped and a plot is uncovered to overthrow the governments of both Realms, Darias races to rescue his wife before the Realms and their lives are destroyed.

Book Highland Heritage

Download or read book Highland Heritage written by Celeste Ray and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year, tens of thousands of people flock to Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina, and to more than two hundred other locations across the country to attend Scottish Highland Games and Gatherings. There, kilt-wearing participants compete in athletics, Highland dancing, and bagpiping, while others join clan societies in celebration of a Scottish heritage. As Celeste Ray notes, however, the Scottish affiliation that Americans claim today is a Highland Gaelic identity that did not come to characterize that nation until long after the ancestors of many Scottish Americans had left Scotland. Ray explores how Highland Scottish themes and lore merge with southern regional myths and identities to produce a unique style of commemoration and a complex sense of identity for Scottish Americans in the South. Blending the objectivity of the anthropologist with respect for the people she studies, she asks how and why we use memories of our ancestral pasts to provide a sense of identity and community in the present. In so doing, she offers an original and insightful examination of what it means to be Scottish in America.

Book The Complete Letters of Constance Fenimore Woolson

Download or read book The Complete Letters of Constance Fenimore Woolson written by Sharon L. Dean and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2012-07-29 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years Constance Fenimore Woolson (1840-1894) has been fictionalized at least three times, perhaps most notably in Colm Tóibín's award-winning work The Master, a novelization of the life of Woolson's close friend Henry James. But Woolson was a literary star in her own right, publishing in the premier magazines of her day. She penned critically acclaimed novels, short stories, and poetry until her mysterious death in Venice at age fifty-three. Sharon Dean has recompiled, dated, and, in many cases, physically reassembled all of Woolson’s extant correspondence from nearly forty sources. Dean's painstaking work presents the fullest picture we have of Woolson and functions as an important corrective to the fictional portrayals. In these letters one finds rich personal detail alongside ruminations on contemporary political and social conditions. A trenchant critic of the customs and mores of her age, Woolson, in her letters, offers a nuanced perspective on life as a woman and as a writer in the nineteenth century.
