Book Home Ground and Foreign Territory

Download or read book Home Ground and Foreign Territory written by Janice Fiamengo and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2014-04-03 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Home Ground and Foreign Territory is an original collection of essays on early Canadian literature in English. Aiming to be both provocative and scholarly, it encompasses a variety of (sometimes opposing) perspectives, subjects, and methods, with the aim of reassessing the field, unearthing neglected texts, and proposing new approaches to canonical authors. Renowned experts in early Canadian literary studies, including D.M.R. Bentley, Mary Jane Edwards, and Carole Gerson, join emerging scholars in a collection distinguished by its clarity of argument and breadth of reference. Together, the essays offer bold and informative contributions to the study of this dynamic literature. Home Ground and Foreign Territory reaches out far beyond the scope of early Canadian literature. Its multi-disciplinary approach innovates literal studies and appeals to literature specialists and general readership alike.

Book A Library of the World s Best Literature Ancient and Modern Vol XXVIII Forty Five Volumes Ovid Pepys

Download or read book A Library of the World s Best Literature Ancient and Modern Vol XXVIII Forty Five Volumes Ovid Pepys written by Charles Dudley Warner and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2008-07-01 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular American essayist, novelist, and journalist CHARLES DUDLEY WARNER (1829-1900) was renowned for the warmth and intimacy of his writing, which encompassed travelogue, biography and autobiography, fiction, and more, and influenced entire generations of his fellow writers. Here, the prolific writer turned editor for his final grand work, a splendid survey of global literature, classic and modern, and it's not too much to suggest that if his friend and colleague Mark Twain-who stole Warner's quip about how "everybody complains about the weather, but nobody does anything about it"-had assembled this set, it would still be hailed today as one of the great achievements of the book world. Highlights from Volume 28 include: . excerpts from Ovid . the philosophy of Thomas Paine . the history writings of Francis Parkman . the philosophy of Parmenides . the writings of Pascal . the poetry of Coventry Patmore . excerpts from the diary of Samuel Pepys . and much, much more.

Book The Dusty Bookcase

Download or read book The Dusty Bookcase written by Brian Busby and published by Biblioasis. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Largely drawn from his columns for Canadian Notes & Queries and entries in his popular blog by the same name, Brian Busby's The Dusty Bookcase explores the fascinating world of Canada's lesser-known literary efforts: works that suffered censorship, critical neglect, or brilliant yet fleeting notoriety. These rare and quirky totems of Canadiana, collected over the last three decades, form a travel diary of sorts—yet one without maps. Covering more than 250 books, peppered with observations on the writing and publishing scenes, Busby's work explores our cultural past, questioning why certain works are celebrated and others ignored. Brilliantly illustrated with covers and ephemera related to the titles discussed, The Dusty Bookcase draws much needed attention to unknown writing worthy of our attention, and some of our acclaim.

Book excerpt: In this "Book of the West" I have not sought to say all that might be said relative to Devon and Cornwall; nor have I attempted to make of it a guide-book. I have rather endeavoured to convey to the visitor to our western peninsula a general idea of what is interesting, and what ought to attract his attention. The book is not intended to supersede guide-books, but to prepare the mind to use these latter with discretion. In dealing with the history of the counties and of the towns, it would have swelled the volumes unduly to have gone systematically through their story from the beginning to the present; it would, moreover, have made the book heavy reading, as well as heavy to carry. I have chosen, therefore, to pick out some incident, or some biography connected with the several towns described, and have limited myself thereto. My object then must not be misunderstood, and my book harshly judged accordingly. There are[vi] ten thousand omissions, but I venture to think a good many things have been admitted which will not be found in guide-books, but which it is well for the visitor to know, if he has a quick intelligence and eyes open to observe. In the Cornish volume I have given rather fully the stories of the saints who have impressed their names indelibly on the land. It has seemed to me absurd to travel in Cornwall and have these names in the mouth, and let them remain nuda nomina. They have a history, and that is intimately associated with the beginnings of that of Cornwall. But their history has not been studied, and in books concerning Cornwall most of the statements about them are wholly false. I have not entered into any critical discussion concerning moot points. I have left that for my "Catalogue of the Cornish Saints" that is being issued in the Journal of the Royal Institution of Cornwall. There are places that might have been described more fully, others that have been passed over without notice.

Book The Translation of a Savage Complete

Download or read book The Translation of a Savage Complete written by Gilbert Parker and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-11-22 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book opens with the current life events in the character of Frank Armour. He is a wealthy English gentleman currently in Canada working for the Hudson Bay Company. He was engaged in England to be married to a young lady of whom his parents were not in favor, since she was from a poor family, and he is admired by a much wealthier young woman. However, both these engagements are ended suddenly by mail from England and Mr. Armour has since become engaged to a young Indian woman. This is a situation that is most certainly not approved, and it does reveal the typical attitudes of that time toward non-whites.
