Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We've got some difficult days ahead," civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr., told a crowd gathered at Memphis's Clayborn Temple on April 3, 1968. "But it really doesn't matter to me now because I've been to the mountaintop. . . . And I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we as a people will get to the promised land." These prohetic words, uttered the day before his assassination, challenged those he left behind to see that his "promised land" of racial equality became a reality; a reality to which King devoted the last twelve years of his life. These words and other are commemorated here in the only major one-volume collection of this seminal twentieth-century American prophet's writings, speeches, interviews, and autobiographical reflections. A Testament of Hope contains Martin Luther King, Jr.'s essential thoughts on nonviolence, social policy, integration, black nationalism, the ethics of love and hope, and more.

Book When My Time Comes

Download or read book When My Time Comes written by Diane Rehm and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The renowned radio host and one of the most trusted voices in the nation candidly and compassionately addresses the hotly contested right-to-die movement, of which she is one of our most inspiring champions. The basis for the acclaimed PBS series. Through interviews with terminally ill patients and their relatives, as well as physicians, ethicists, religious leaders, and representatives of both those who support and vigorously oppose this urgent movement, Rehm gives voice to a broad range of people personally linked to the realities of medical aid in dying. With characteristic evenhandedness, she provides the full context for this highly divisive issue and presents the fervent arguments—both for and against—that are propelling the current debate: Should we adopt laws allowing those who are dying to put an end to their suffering? Featuring a deeply personal foreword by John Grisham, When My Time Comes is a response to many misconceptions and misrepresentations of end-of-life care. It is a call to action—and to conscience—and it is an attempt to heal and soothe, reminding us that death, too, is an integral part of life.

Book When the Time Comes

Download or read book When the Time Comes written by Paula Span and published by Grand Central Life & Style. This book was released on 2009-06-10 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What will you do when you get the call that a loved one has had a heart attack or a stroke? Or when you realize that a family member is too frail to live alone, but too healthy for a nursing home? Journalist Paula Span shares the resonant narratives of several families who faced these questions. Each family contemplates the alternatives in elder care (from assisted living to multigenerational living to home care, nursing care, and at the end, hospice care) and chooses the right path for its needs. Span writes about the families' emotional challenges, their practical discoveries, and the good news that some of them find a situation that has worked for them and their loved ones. And many find joy in the duty of caring for an older loved one. There are 45 million Americans caring for family members currently, and as the 77 million boomers continue to age, this number will only go up. Paula Span's stories are revealing and informative. They give a sense of all the emotional and practical factors that go into the major decisions about caregiving, so that readers will be better able to figure out what to do when the time comes for them and their loved ones.

Book excerpt: Set within the context of the interrelated political, economic and religious issues facing America today, "A Patriot's Plot" is a novel of political and religious intrigue involving the unorthodox efforts of General Ian Forester, a wealthy anti-Islamic American patriot and retired US Army general, to change the government and its religious policies by radical means.Congressman Jeff Bradley's accidental involvement in the death of an employee of a defense systems contractor leads to the discovery and exposure of an intricate plot by General Forester, the defense contractor's founder, to undermine the government and change its policies towards Islam and Muslim radicalism. General Forester and others believe that the current inept government and outdated government policies and principles, especially those regarding freedom of religion threaten the country's survival against an Islamic Jihad. The General is convinced that Islam is not simply a religion but a nation, a nation where the principles of “separation of church and state” and “freedom of religion” do not exist. It is a nation bent on world domination, a nation that is at war with the US, and as such, a nation that should be treated the same as any other nation at war with the US. Recognizing that the drastic change required in the government cannot be achieved by normal political means, or by force, General Forester uses his wealth to undertake a secret project under the guise of a US defense R&D contract to create change from within the government through the application of cutting-edge technology.Things become complicated on an international level when the death of Forester's employee is linked to an R&D facility headed by a Muslim in a non-Islamic country that is a long-term US ally with no known connection with Islamic extremists or Muslim terrorists.

Book Thinking with Kierkegaard

Download or read book Thinking with Kierkegaard written by Arne Grøn and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-12-31 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arne Grøn’s reading of Søren Kierkegaard’s authorship revolves around existential challenges of human identity. The 35 essays that constitute this book are written over three decades and are characterized by combining careful attention to the augmentative detail of Kierkegaard’s text with a constant focus on issues in contemporary philosophy. Contrary to many approaches to Kierkegaard’s authorship, Grøn does not read Kierkegaard in opposition to Hegel. The work of the Danish thinker is read as a critical development of Hegelian phenomenology with particular attention to existential aspects of human experience. Anxiety and despair are the primary existential phenomena that Kierkegaard examines throughout his authorship, and Grøn uses these negative phenomena to argue for the basically ethical aim of Kierkegaard’s work. In Grøn’s reading, Kierkegaard conceives human selfhood not merely as relational, but also a process of becoming the self that one is through the otherness of self-experience, that is, the body, the world, other people, and God. This book should be of interest to philosophers, theologians, literary studies scholars, and anyone with an interest not only in Kierkegaard, but also in human identity.
