Book When the Whirlwind Passes

Download or read book When the Whirlwind Passes written by Alexander Nderitu and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-11-10 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maggie's encounter with Michael Othaya, the young heir to a multi-billion-shilling fashion empire, marked the beginning of a cataclysmic cycle of events that would involve sex, manipulation, conspiracy...and first-degree murder. To be sure, the Sultans of Fashion had had their fair share of scandals and intrigues in the past. Overly ambitious and genetically predisposed towards greed, the rich and famous Othayas were no strangers to controversy. But it wasn't until Michael and Maggie - a ghetto princess - started romancing that the feuding family's civil war reached its climax... Easily digested and written with a handle on humour, When the Whirlwind Passes is doubtless one of the best crime novels to ever come out of Africa. 'Alex Nderitu is one of a handful of young, brilliant writers to come off the Kenyan terrain in the recent past. His books (hoping there will be many more)...are pure commercial escapism, and brilliantly written at that.' - Daily Nation

Book A Whirlwind Passed through Our Country

Download or read book A Whirlwind Passed through Our Country written by Rani-Henrik Andersson and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inception of the Ghost Dance religion in 1890 marked a critical moment in Lakota history. Yet, because this movement alarmed government officials, culminating in the infamous massacre at Wounded Knee of 250 Lakota men, women, and children, historical accounts have most often described the Ghost Dance from the perspective of the white Americans who opposed it. In A Whirlwind Passed through Our Country, historian Rani-Henrik Andersson instead gives Lakotas a sounding board, imparting the multiplicity of Lakota voices on the Ghost Dance at the time. Whereas early accounts treated the Ghost Dance as a military or political movement, A Whirlwind Passed through Our Country stresses its peaceful nature and reveals the breadth of Lakota views on the subject. The more than one hundred accounts compiled here show that the movement caused friction within Lakota society even as it spurred genuine religious belief. These accounts, many of them never before translated from the original Lakota or published, demonstrate that the Ghost Dance’s message resonated with Lakotas across artificial “progressive” and “nonprogressive” lines. Although the movement was often criticized as backward and disconnected from the harsh realities of Native life, Ghost Dance adherents were in fact seeking new ways to survive, albeit not those that contemporary whites envisioned for them. The Ghost Dance, Andersson suggests, might be better understood as an innovative adaptation by the Lakotas to the difficult situation in which they found themselves—and as a way of finding a path to a better life. By presenting accounts of divergent views among the Lakota people, A Whirlwind Passed through Our Country expands the narrative of the Ghost Dance, encouraging more nuanced interpretations of this significant moment in Lakota and American history.

Book excerpt: A hero's endeavor collapses into a terrorist's best-case scenario for the destruction of the earth. A cataclysmic event inadvertently causes a violent 1000 mph tornadic whirlwind from the sun evaporating water from the earth’s oceans and lakes. This lust-for-adventure sci-fi book about climate change takes on some of the world's greatest modern-day threats and global environmental issues as nature retaliates against humanity’s complacent destruction of Mother Earth’s environment. Will our hero’s environmental project send him further into loneliness? Will he self-actualize the saying, “the road to hell is paved with good intentions?” Or will his project save humanity from its global environmental issues and restore our relationship with Mother Earth? It’s one of those sci-fi books that tantalize the mature adult reader, but it’s not for the faint-hearted. It might be one of the best sci-fi fantasy books to explore climate change and global warming as our hero searches for a way forward through the malaise of despondency.

Book The Lakota Ghost Dance of 1890

Download or read book The Lakota Ghost Dance of 1890 written by Rani-Henrik Andersson and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2008-11-01 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A broad range of perspectives from Natives and non-Natives makes this book the most complete account and analysis of the Lakota ghost dance ever published. A revitalization movement that swept across Native communities of the West in the late 1880s, the ghost dance took firm hold among the Lakotas, perplexed and alarmed government agents, sparked the intervention of the U.S. Army, and culminated in the massacre of hundreds of Lakota men, women, and children at Wounded Knee in December 1890. Although the Lakota ghost dance has been the subject of much previous historical study, the views of Lakota participants have not been fully explored, in part because they have been available only in the Lakota language. Moreover, emphasis has been placed on the event as a shared historical incident rather than as a dynamic meeting ground of multiple groups with differing perspectives. In The Lakota Ghost Dance of 1890, Rani-Henrik Andersson uses for the first time some accounts translated from Lakota. This book presents these Indian accounts together with the views and observations of Indian agents, the U.S. Army, missionaries, the mainstream press, and Congress. This comprehensive, complex, and compelling study not only collects these diverse viewpoints but also explores and analyzes the political, cultural, and economic linkages among them.
