Book excerpt: Excerpt from When the Tide Turns Rupert Savage pressed the tiller against his side and slacked away the sheet of the lug-sail, and the little boat paid off before the wind, the water bubbling and talking under her planks. As the white sail bellied out and strained against the mast he steered close in to the low shores, flying past miniature rocky capes and bays on the clear green water. Presently, as a small natural harbour opened out in the rocks, he slipped the halliards and lowered the sail, swinging the boat round and pointing her up the narrow passage. The water lay perfectly still in the morning heat; even the sea birds were silent; and the empty shore gave back no sound but an echo of the murmur of the tide where it slipped through the narrows. Before him, at the head of the inlet, appeared a patch of shingly beach; the little boat's way carried her on and up until the deep silence was broken by the crunch and slow grating touch of her landfall, and by the little wave of water that, following, broke on the pebbles. And then everything was still again. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. You were five when I lost you. Mrs. Kendall's voice shook. Unconsciously she drew Margaret into a closer embrace. Even now she was scarcely sure that it was Margaret - this little maid who had stepped so suddenly out of the great silence that had closed about her four long years before. Margaret laughed softly, and nestled in the encircling arms. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Twelve-year-old Mimi Laskaris is inspired by the Wijsen sisters of Bali to turn her focus from classical piano to a new obsession: forming a grassroots, kid-led movement to ban plastic bags in her new island home in Florida. Written in accessible verse, this timely story of environmental activism has extensive back matter for aspiring activists. With a foreword by Melati Wijsen, cofounder of Bye, Bye Plastic Bags. Mimi has a plan for her seventh grade year: play piano in the Young Artists competition at Carnegie Hall with her best friend, Lee; enjoy a good old Massachusetts snow day or two; and work in her community garden plot with her dad. But all that changes when her family’s Greek restaurant falls on hard times. The Laskarises’ relocation to Wilford Island, Florida, is a big key change for Mimi. Where does she fit in in this shell-covered paradise without Lee? Mimi is taken by the beauty of the island and alarmed by the plastic pollution she sees on the beaches. Then her science teacher, Ms. Miller, shows her class a TED Talk by Melati and Isabel Wijsen. At ages twelve and ten, they lobbied to ban single-use plastic bags on their home island of Bali—and won. Their story strikes a chord for Mimi. She’s twelve. Could a kid like her make such a big change in a place that she’s not yet sure feels like home? Can she manage to keep up with piano, her schoolwork, and activism? And does confident and flawless Carmen Alvarez-Hill really want to help her with the movement? In this story of environmental activism, friendship, and self-discovery, Mimi figures out what’s truly important to her, and takes her place in the ranks of real-life youth activists like the Wijsen sisters, Greta Thunberg, and Isra Hirsi.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Turn of the Tide, American Operations at Cantigny, Château Thierry, and the Second Battle of the Marne In justice to our gallant and indomitable Allies who bore the brunt of the War and denied the Central Allies the ultimate victory while we'were preparing to assist in attaining it, I have been careful to avoid the all too common error of overrating our physical contribution to the result. However great the moral effect of our participation in the fighting on the Marne may have been, and it is hard to overestimate that effect, the time has come when in justice to ourselves as well as to our Allies we should view the events of the War sanely, and endeavor to see them in their true perspective. Surely the truth is glorious enough, and there is no cause for our pride to suffer at its telling. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from When the Tide Turned: The American Attack at Chateau Thierry and Belleau Wood in the First Week of June, 1918 The nation was immensely strong only as long as that obsession remained unshaken. With its destruction by a series Of defeats which were incapable of being explained as strategic retreats, their morale crumbled and finally collapsed, because it was not sustained, as that Of the Allies was sustained in the darkest days of the war by the faith that they were fighting for all that men hold most sacred. TO those who were acquainted with German mentality and psychology, it had been manifest all along that when the end foreordained did come, it would come with catastrophic suddenness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rising Tide The street was very quiet, - except when the barber's children squabbled shrilly, or Baker's livery-stable sent out a few funeral hacks, or when, from a barred window in the ell Of the Payton house, there came a noisy laugh. And always, on the half-hour, the two mules went tinkling along, their neat little feet cupping down over the cobble stones, and their trace-chains swinging and sagging about their heels. The conductor on the car had been on the route so long that he knew many Of his patrons, and nodded to them in a friendly way, and said it was a good day, or too cold for the season; occasionally he imparted information which he thought might be Of interest to them. On this October afternoon of brown fog and occasional dashes Of rain he enlightened a lady with a vaguely sweet face, who signaled him to stop at no. 15. Miss Payton's out, he said, pulling the strap over his head and bringing his car to a standstill; but her ma's at home. I brought the Old lady back on my last trip, just as Miss Freddy was starting Off with that pup Of hers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
