Book excerpt: An interdisciplinary investigation into how colors vary in the eyes and minds of people across cultures worldwide The title of this volume and its accompanying exhibition at the Museum of World Cultures in Frankfurt alludes to ancient Japanese poetry in which the sky is sometimes described as green and the grass as blue. The world is full of color no matter where one looks, but not every culture interprets the spectrum of shades in the same way, nor do individual people always see the same colors despite our physiological similarities. This publication highlights pieces from the museum's collection, ranging in origin from the Amazon to Tibet, as anthropological case studies in the exploration of color and the meanings ascribed to different hues. In concert with essays from the fields of philosophy, linguistics and physics, Green Sky, Blue Grassuncovers the complexity of human perception across the globe.

Bill Monroe loved many things: playing music, his big family, and his home in the bluegrass state of Kentucky. Even though his eyes were crossed and didn't work right, Bill's ears worked hard, picking out all sorts of sounds around his treasured home: rushing streams, wailing winds, and sundown jamborees with his family. Through heartache and hard times, Bill held on to these sounds that reminded him of home. Award-winning author Barb Rosenstock and illustrator Edwin Fotheringham beautifully capture the ups and downs of Bill Monroe's musical journey, and how his deep Kentucky roots helped him create a unique form of American music--bluegrass. Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash and Jerry Garcia all credit Bill Monroe with influencing their music.

Throughout, Ewing deftly captures Monroe's relationships and the personalities of an ever-shifting roster of band members while shedding light on his business dealings and his pioneering work with Bean Blossom and other music festivals. Hembree’s journey included playing at the White House and on the acclaimed album Master of Bluegrass. But it also put him on a collision course with the rigors of touring, the mysteries of Southern culture, and the complex personality of bandleader-legend Bill Monroe. Whether it’s figuring out the best time for breakfast (early) or for beating the boss at poker (never), Hembree gives readers an up-close look at the occasionally exalting, often unglamorous life of a touring musician in the sometimes baffling, always colorful company of a bluegrass icon. The amusing story of a Yankee fish out of water, On the Bus with Bill Monroe mixes memoir with storytelling to recount the adventures of a Northerner learning new ways and the Old South.

Book The Other Side of Blue Grass

Download or read book The Other Side of Blue Grass written by Garnett S. Huguley and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2002-12-10 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Other Side of Blue Grass is a racy thriller, a page-turner that incorporates the popular ingredients that attract contemporary readers. It is an adult novel with a plot line of many contemporary themes; the right to possess and bear arms, protection of individual rights, legal ethics, and an inter-racial romance. The protagonists and villains are believable. A main ingredient in the novel is a well-structured courtroom drama, worthy of John Grisham that connects and brings substance to the underlying theme of crime and punishment. A component of the mystery is provided by a mysterious illness that kills a group of lawyers attending an ABA meeting in a small Kentucky town. This episode, an integral part of the climax, is resolved in a Patricia Cornwell style and with the Internet. The story is given credibility through well-developed, realistic dialogue and movement of the story line through realistic scenes--the landscape and countryside of Kentucky. The novel succeeds in building a connection between the characters and the reader by developing individual characters personalities and motivations. Each character is alive at their first appearance. Readers will not be able to put down this novel due to their intense need to know what happens next. The story has an excellent climax and close that is believable and complete. This book will attract a broad readership from young to older adults.

Book The Godless Delusion

  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers

Download or read book The Godless Delusion written by Jim Harries and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-07-07 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if the whole "God delusion" approach is a neo-colonial imposition at the linguistic and philosophical level? Could it lead to unmitigated disasters in intercultural communication and development work? This paradigm-challenging book points to the necessity, in light of contemporary impasse in intercultural understanding, of God's involvement in the encounter between the West and the majority world, especially Africa. Failure to account for God, the cradle of imagination operative in human hearts and minds has resulted in a black hole that deeply troubles intercultural engagement between the West and others. While drawing on his personal long-term field experience in Africa, the author cites contemporary scholarly Western literature on philosophy, anthropology, "religion," and beyond. Ironically, the West, which values dualism, instead of seeking to share it with majority world people, wrongly presupposes its universality. A proactive compliance to the countering of "racism" and to the demotion of impacts of human imagination on understanding contribute to this. Effective education must be from known to unknown, this text emphasizes. Enabling African people to build understanding on their own epistemological foundations might be more important than exporting of pre-packaged languages and educational systems from the West.
