Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's not enough for students to just understand a text. In order for students to achieve academic excellence and succeed in today's society, they must also be able to exercise critical awareness over what they read. But how do you cultivate comprehension and help kids sharpen their analytical skills? The answer, writes Barbara King-Shaver, lies in thinking outside the book by studying texts in tandem. In When Text Meets Text, King-Shaver lays out rationales and strategies for using an approach called intertextuality, where a reading of carefully paired texts increases students' grasp of content while honing their command of crucial critical tools. Making connections among texts, students delve deeper into each by observing similarities and differences in literary characteristics such as syntax, plot, character, and structure, propelling them toward greater meaning making. King-Shaver presents the research supporting intertextual instruction, techniques for adding it to your curriculum, suggestions for a wide array of books to teach together, and, best of all, practical ideas for units of study covering key aspects of teaching literature, including: genre theme author archetypes. Find an exciting new way to build literature connections in your classroom, as you extend the comprehension abilities of your students. Read Barbara King-Shaver's When Text Meets Text, and find out why two texts are better than one.

Book Holy Ground Where Art and Text Meet

Download or read book Holy Ground Where Art and Text Meet written by Hans T. Bakker and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-12-16 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 31 selected and revised articles in the volume Holy Ground: Where Art and Text Meet, written by Hans Bakker between 1986 and 2016, vary from theoretical subjects to historical essays on the classical culture of India. They combine two mainstreams: the Sanskrit textual tradition, including epigraphy, and the material culture as expressed in works of religious art and iconography. The study of text and art in close combination in the actual field where they meet provides a great potential for understanding. The history of holy places is therefore one of the leitmotivs that binds these studies together. One article, "The Ramtek Inscriptions II", was co-authored by Harunaga Isaacson, two articles, on "Moksadharma 187 and 239–241" and "The Quest for the Pasupata Weapon," by Peter C. Bisschop.

Book Reframing Biblical Studies

Download or read book Reframing Biblical Studies written by Ellen Van Wolde and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2009-06-23 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently, biblical studies and studies of the written and material culture of the ancient Near East have been fragmented, governed by experts who are confined within their individual disciplines’ methodological frameworks and patterns of thinking. The consequence has been that, at present, concepts and the terminology for examining the interaction of textual and historical complexes are lacking. However, we can learn from the cognitive sciences. Until the end of the 1980s, neurophysiologists, psychologists, pediatricians, and linguists worked in complete isolation from one another on various aspects of the human brain. Then, beginning in the 1990s, one group began to focus on processes in the brain, thereby requiring that cell biologists, neurologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, linguists, and other relevant scientists collaborate with each other. Their investigation revealed that the brain integrates all kinds of information; if this were not the case, we would not be able to catch even a glimpse of the brain’s processing activity. By analogy, van Wolde’s proposal for biblical scholarship is to extend its examination of single elements by studying the integrative structures that emerge out of the interconnectivity of the parts. This analysis is based on detailed studies of specific relationships among data of diverse origins, using language as the essential device that links and permits expression. This method can be called a cognitive relational approach. Van Wolde bases her work on cognitive concepts developed by Ronald Langacker. With these concepts, biblical scholars will be able to study emergent cognitive structures that issue from biblical words and texts in interaction with historical complexes. Van Wolde presents a method of analysis that biblical scholars can follow to investigate interactions among words and texts in the Hebrew Bible, material and nonmaterial culture, and comparative textual and historical contexts. In a significant portion of the book, she then exemplifies this method of analysis by applying it to controversial concepts and passages in the Hebrew Bible (the crescent moon; the in-law family; the city gate; differentiation and separation; Genesis 1, 34; Leviticus 18, 20; Numbers 5, 35; Deuteronomy 21; and Ezekiel 18, 22, 33).

Girl Meets Boy is about girls and boys, girls and girls, love and transformation, and the absurdity of consumerism, as well as a story of reversals and revelations that is as sharply witty as it is lyrical. Funny, fresh, poetic, and political, Girl Meets Boy is a myth of metamorphosis for a world made in Madison Avenues image, and the funniest addition to the Myths series from Canongate since Margaret Atwoods The Penelopiad.

Download or read book Hand Me Down World written by Lloyd Jones and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-10-04 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of a young African mother's journey to reclaim the infant son heartlessly stolen from her. Beginning in Tunisia, where she is employed as a hotel maid, the novel follows her as she makes an illegal, near-drowning crossing of the Mediterranean, then up the length of Italy, across the Alps, and on to Berlin, where her child has been given a new home. We learn the mother's story through the people she meets along the way, human links in the perilous chain of her journey: a taxi driver, a hunter, a snail collector, a street performer, a blind man. Most are generous, some malevolent, but all write their own deeply personal needs on the nearly blank slate of a mother whose needs are greatest of all. Finally, the woman herself picks up the narration, re-telling her story in her own words. And only then do we understand the extent of the sacrifice she has been willing to make for the love of her child. After eight novels, and following on the heels of his award winning, bestselling Mister Pip, Hand Me Down World confirms Lloyd Jones' stature as one of the most provocative and important writers writing today. Dazzling in its literary effects, powerful in its emotions, this is a masterwork of contemporary fiction.

Book Text Relevance and Learning from Text

Download or read book Text Relevance and Learning from Text written by Gregory Schraw and published by IAP. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do people from similar backgrounds who read the same text construct different meanings? Is there a question behind every reading goal, such that reading is an interactive process of asking and answering of questions? Do people who believe that knowledge is dynamic construct meaning differently than those who believe that knowledge is certain? This volume addresses questions such as these and presents cutting edge research and theory that explores how readers determine text relevance (i.e., the different values they assign to information as they read), how relevance affects understanding, and the implications of these studies for theories of text comprehension. This volume documents in a compelling manner the ongoing international effort to understand how text relevance affects reading and comprehension. Contributing authors represent major academic institutions on three continents and nine countries, demonstrating the multinational interest in text relevance. Why is there so much interest in text relevance? Learners are inundated with unprecedented amounts of information, and increased research regarding how readers process non-traditional texts (e.g., documents on the web) and multiple documents, for example, underscores the importance of understanding how readers determine the relevance of text information for personal, academic, or professional goals, which can enable educators to design learning situations that help learners get the most out of reading.
