Book When Reasoning Is on Vacation

Download or read book When Reasoning Is on Vacation written by Emokpae Odigie and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2015-09-07 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Africa, the belief in witchcraft, magic, God, devil, and life before and after death are thought to be in the supernatural realm. In his book, Nigerian author Emokpae Odigie tries to explain human events and actions given the background of natural laws, all in an attempt to end African superstition and its reliance on erroneous, invisible supernatural powers. When Reasoning Is on Vacation is all about humanity, and how social and economic progress can be affected with outmoded thinking. The author chose events to write about for which the machinations of witches and other invisible powers were attributed in Africa and tried to place them as natural laws. He raises questions about some and then tries to explain them in the background of natural occurrence. The book was written to reflect the lack of social and economic progress of Africans, as well as the common accusation of innocent people possessing the power of witchcraft, which is believed to be responsible for misfortune.

Book When Reason Goes on Holiday

Download or read book When Reason Goes on Holiday written by Neven Sesardic and published by Encounter Books. This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophers usually emphasize the importance of logic, clarity and reason. Therefore when they address political issues they will usually inject a dose of rationality in these discussions, right? Wrong. This book gives a lot of examples showing the unexpected level of political irrationality among leading contemporary philosophers. The body of the book presents a detailed analysis of extreme leftist views of a number of famous philosophers and their occasional descent into apology for—and occasionally even active participation in—totalitarian politics. Most of these episodes are either virtually unknown (even inside the philosophical community) or have received very little attention. The author tries to explain how it was possible that so many luminaries of twentieth-century philosophy, who invoked reason and exhibited rigor and careful thinking in their professional work, succumbed to irrationality and ended up supporting some of the most murderous political regimes and ideologies. The huge leftist bias in contemporary philosophy and its persistence over the years is certainly a factor but it is far from being the whole story. Interestingly, the indisputably high intelligence of these philosophers did not actually protect them from descending into political insanity. It is argued that, on the contrary, both their brilliance and the high esteem they enjoyed in the profession only made them more self-confident and less cautious, thereby eventually making them blind to their betrayal of reason and the monstrosity of the causes they defended.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we develop the sensitivity necessary for playing music or making crafts? How can teachers make their lessons interesting? In what ways can consumers avoid undue influence? How do we acquire refined tastes, or come to believe what we want to believe? Addressing these issues and providing an account for tackling personal and societal problems, Rolf Reber combines insights from psychology, philosophy, and education to introduce the concept of 'critical feeling'. While many people are familiar with the concept of critical thinking, critical feeling denotes the strategic use of feelings in order to optimize an outcome. Reber discusses the theoretical and empirical foundations of critical feeling and provides an overview of applications, including well-being, skill learning, personal relationships, business, politics, school, art, morality, and religion. This original and thought-provoking study will interest a broad range of researchers, students, and practitioners.

Book The Holiday Makers

Download or read book The Holiday Makers written by Richard K. Popp and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2012-05-16 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the 1930s and 1960s, the spread of new transportation networks and the democratization of paid vacations struck many observers as a sign that tourism was growing into a folkway of modern American life. Easy mobility and free time lay at the heart of this idealized vision, and vacations were seen as a ritualized expression of the movement and egalitarianism that characterized midcentury modernity. The Holiday Makers tells the story of how advertisers sold tourist travel in popular magazines during this era, transforming consumer culture in the process.
