Book The House by the Dvina

Download or read book The House by the Dvina written by Eugenie Fraser and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-03-11 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The House by the Dvina is the riveting story of two families separated in culture and geography but bound together by a Russian-Scottish marriage. It includes episodes as romantic and dramatic as any in fiction: the purchase by the author's great-grandfather of a peasant girl with whom he had fallen in love; the desperate sledge journey in the depths of winter made by her grandmother to intercede with Tsar Aleksandr II for her husband; the extraordinary courtship of her parents; and her Scottish granny being caught up in the abortive revolution of 1905. Eugenie Fraser herself was brought up in Russia but was taken on visits to Scotland. She marvellously evokes a child's reactions to two totally different environments, sets of customs and family backgrounds, while the characters are beautifully drawn and splendidly memorable. With the events of 1914 to 1920 - the war with Germany, the Revolution, the murder of the Tsar and the withdrawal of the Allied Intervention in the north - came the disintegration of Russia and of family life. The stark realities of hunger, deprivation and fear are sharply contrasted with the adventures of childhood. The reader shares the family's suspense and concern about the fates of its members and relives with Eugenie her final escape to Scotland. In The House by the Dvina, Eugenie Fraser has vividly and poignantly portrayed a way of life that finally disappeared in violence and tragedy.

Download or read book Vanished by the Danube written by Charles Farkas and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2013-06-20 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Germany's invasion of Hungary in 1944 marked the end of a culture that had dominated Central Europe from the nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth. In this poignant memoir, Charles Farkas offers a testament to this vanished way of life—its society, morality, personal integrity, wealth, traditions, and chivalry—as well as an eyewitness account of its destruction, begun at the hands of the Nazis and then completed under the heel of Soviet Communism. Farkas's recollections of growing up in Budapest, a city whose grandeur embraced—indeed spanned—the Danube River; his vivid descriptions of everyday life in Hungary before, during, and after World War II; and his ultimate flight to freedom in the United States remind us that behind the larger historical events of the past century are the stories of the individual men and women who endured and, ultimately, survived them.

Book Silver Threads and Golden Strands

Download or read book Silver Threads and Golden Strands written by William Farmer Sr and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Teenage Warrior is primarily about the effect WWII had on 'baby brothers' who watched older brothers leave home to serve their country. Being left behind, feeling useless, and all the normal frustrations of early teens. Bill became a 'teenage delinquent' before the term was coined. He wrangled his way into the Navy at 15 and soon had doubts that he could handle it. Remembering his Dad's words, 'I'll help you get in but won't help you get out', he served 32 months during the war. 26 months were spent at sea and 12 months were spent in combat zones. The WWII tales in this book vary from "serious" to humorous. Bill survived the explosion of the Chicago Naval Ammunition Depot, hurricane Cobra, a surprise Japanese 'Betty' bombing of B29's at Tinian, and a "psycho ward" on Roi Namur Island. The book is full of surprises as Bill remembers some of the good times he had even in the face of battle. Bill became a WWII Veteran, same as his four older brothers."--Back cover.

Book My Story My Journey

Download or read book My Story My Journey written by Paul Lippok and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-10-13 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was born in 1926 in a town in Silesia, Germanys south eastern Province bordering Poland to the east and Czechoslovakia to the south. That is how it was for 2000 years until 1945 when Hitlers war ended, and our Heimat Schlesien no longer existed. The peace treaty demanded that Silesia be annexed to Poland meaning the eviction of our people. Six months after my 17th birthday, shortly before Christmas 1943, I was called up to military service and after my training sent to Italy, where five months later, on Sunday 4th June 1944 I was captured by the U.S. Army just outside Rome. They brought us to Norfolk Virginia from where a train journey took us to a POW camp in Oklahoma, moving soon to Fort Bliss, El Paso. In autumn 1945 fifty POWs travelled by bus to the Napa Valley to pick tomatoes, prunes, and work in the vineyards, and after New Year 1946 south to pick cotton. In early March 1946 we received black-dyed U.S. Army uniforms, boarded a troop ship in Oakland and were sent back to Europe via the Panama Canal, to arrive three weeks later in Liverpool, UK. From there we travelled by train to the north of Scotland where now over sixty years later, I continue to live. My book will tell my journey.

Book Titanic Style

  • Author : Grace Evans
  • Publisher : Skyhorse Publishing Inc.
  • Release : 2012-11-13
  • ISBN : 1620871998
  • Pages : 193 pages

Download or read book Titanic Style written by Grace Evans and published by Skyhorse Publishing Inc.. This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Titanic Style explores the world of fashion and dress at the time of RMS Titanic’s famous voyage. With stunning images and enlightening historical analysis, this book takes us through the wardrobes of passengers and crew of all classes and ages, from the most intimate undergarments to the warm overcoats needed on that last fearful, cold night. The ship was a microcosm of post-Edwardian society, in which everyone belonged to a particular class and dressed accordingly. The luxurious attire of the ladies in first class, the cream of European and American society, was changed several times a day, while the more sober and conservative clothes of the men of all ranks subtly conveyed their status, and children were dressed to enhance their social standing. We also visit the families below deck, dressed in second-hand or homemade clothes, heading for a new life in a country free of repressive class distinction. Stories and records of individual passengers and crew members are woven into the narrative to give an engaging account of what life was really like onboard the world’s most famous ocean liner. Whether you are a Titanic enthusiast, a fashion lover, or both, this book will delight you with exquisite garments and the absorbing cultural history behind them.
