Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coast of Bohemia IN one of the old-fashioned books for children there was a story of the adventures of a cent (or perhaps that coin of older lineage, a penny) told by itself, which came into my mind when the publishers sug gested that the readers of a new edition of this book might like to know how it happened to be written. E promptly fancied the book speaking, and taking upon itself the burden of autobiography, which we none of us find very heavy; and no sooner had I done so than I began actually to hear from it in a narrative of much greater distinctness than I could have supplied for it. It is bounded on the north by a sparse fringe of fashionables who live in mellow brick houses. It takes only a min ute to walk from the north to the south, but whether you pass the hotels - west, or choose the way past the Benedict - east, you have left New York and gone into that mythical spot called Greenwich Village. If I were asked by a dweller in one of these amiable pink abodes north What road to take to what its friends affectionately call The Village, I would be at a loss to point it out. Book Madame Bohemia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Madame Bohemia Classic Reprint written by Francis Neilson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Madame Bohemia Battista Guarini's dive was a warm cellar near Bleeker Street, down a flight of eight narrow steps to swinging doors on the top step of a shorter flight; the doors, opening, showed a room which, though sixty feet long and thirty broad, was less than eight feet high; on each side were seven tables, and each table was flanked by four chairs. In the centre of the room stood a large stove, the pipe from which, suspended by wires, ran back half the length of the room to the kitchen chimney. Guarini said the ceiling was already black when he turned the cellar into a restaurant. Caricatures of political notorieties and of celebrated artists, and curious anatomical studies, were sketched by the aid of sticks and umbrellas on the ceiling, which in consequence had a reputation equal to that of Guarini's famous dinner. Twelve years ago, in New York, this was the favourite rendezvous of the hungry subjects of the Nine. Guarini said he was a descendant of the Italian poet who wrote "The Faithful Swain." No one doubted this, for Battista was worthy of any ancestor, poet or otherwise. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Torch Bearers of Bohemia Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Torch Bearers of Bohemia Classic Reprint written by V. I. Kryzhanovskaya and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Torch-Bearers of Bohemia This story, which has been awarded Honorable Mention by the Imperial Academy of Science of Petrograd, is the work of a living writer; but its scene is laid in past times, in the days of John Hus and his contemporaries. Although it is full of exciting incident as a story, "The Torchbearers of Bohemia" seeks also to give a picture of the life of Bohemia at the beginning of the Fifteenth Century, and to show the intense hatred, which persists to this day, of the Czechs (or Bohemians, as they are called throughout) for their Teutonic oppressors. In such high-colored passages as those connected with the trial of Hus, or the revolt in Prague upon the death of King Venceslas, the author is so clearly combining her vivid sense of historical color with intense sympathy for the Hussite cause, that this personal conviction unquestionably adds to the "immediacy" of the passionate scenes, and brings them leaping to the eye. Hus, to the writer, is the hero of the book, in spite of all the heroic virtues of Jerome and Vok; while the villain is not so much Brancaccio as the whole assembly of the clerical abuses against which Hus thundered his denunciations. Wickedness in plenty is here of a personal and quite privately terrible kind; but then so is one lurid aspect of the history of a fierce religious conflict. Book excerpt: An intergalactic odyssey of love, ambition, and self-discovery. Orphaned as a boy, raised in the Czech countryside by his doting grandparents, Jakub Prochv°zka has risen from small-time scientist to become the country's first astronaut. When a dangerous solo mission to Venus offers him both the chance at heroism he's dreamt of, and a way to atone for his father's sins as a Communist informer, he ventures boldly into the vast unknown. But in so doing, he leaves behind his devoted wife, Lenka, whose love, he realizes too late, he has sacrificed on the altar of his ambitions. Alone in Deep Space, Jakub discovers a possibly imaginary giant alien spider, who becomes his unlikely companion. Over philosophical conversations about the nature of love, life and death, and the deliciousness of bacon, the pair form an intense and emotional bond. Will it be enough to see Jakub through a clash with secret Russian rivals and return him safely to Earth for a second chance with Lenka? Rich with warmth and suspense and surprise, Spaceman of Bohemia is an exuberant delight from start to finish. Very seldom has a novel this profound taken readers on a journey of such boundless entertainment and sheer fun. "A frenetically imaginative first effort, booming with vitality and originality . . . Kalfar's voice is distinct enough to leave tread marks."-Jennifer Senior, New York Times
