Book When Hockey Won t Sell in Minnesota

Download or read book When Hockey Won t Sell in Minnesota written by Clinton J. Warren and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This case puts students in the role of a sales and marketing strategist for a fictional consulting firm, MinneService Innovations. In this narrative, MinneService Innovations is tasked with consulting for the University of Minnesota Golden Gopher athletic department. Specifically, students are asked to work to solve a significant spectator attendance problem at Gopher men's hockey games. Since the Gopher men's team began play in the Big Ten Hockey Conference, they have failed to reach their traditionally successful levels of play. In addition, the athletic department began requiring seating donations for season ticket holders for men's hockey. This effectively doubled the cost of season tickets for most fans. The combination of losing historic rivals, increasing the cost to purchase season tickets, and a dip in team performance has led to a decline in season ticket sales from 7,349 in 2015 to 4,949 in 2018.This case study asks students to assume the role of a ticket sales strategist hired to work as a consultant for the University of Minnesota Golden Gopher athletic department. In this case, you will be asked to work with members of the Gopher Fan Advisory Board to develop service innovations in the area of ticket sales. As a sales and marketing consultant, you will examine existing data on spectator attendance trends and focus group interviews to determine the current issues facing the athletic department. Then, you will be asked to suggest the manners by which the athletic department should innovate the ticket service, using a design thinking approach to grow ticket sales and spectator attendance for the men's hockey program.

Book The NHL s Mistake by the Lake

Download or read book The NHL s Mistake by the Lake written by Gary Webster and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cleveland Barons should never have existed. Born when the National Hockey League's California Golden Seals--another team that should never have existed--were transplanted to Cleveland in 1976 and greeted with apathy by the dwindling number of hockey fans in northeastern Ohio, the Barons were an embarrassment to the city and to the NHL. The only thing the team had going for them was the state-of-the-art arena they played in, which was all but empty for nearly every game they played. This book chronicles the Barons' two regrettable seasons--a case study in what happens when an ill-conceived professional sports team created in an expansion splurge is moved, in an effort to save it, to a city that doesn't really want it.

Book Frozen in Time

Download or read book Frozen in Time written by Adam Raider and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1967 the National Hockey League decided to double its size from six teams to twelve. This expansion was the first of its kind, and Minnesota, with its rich hockey history, was a natural choice for a new franchise. Thus the Minnesota North Stars were born. Frozen in Time examines the organization’s signature seasons, from the late 1970s, when the club was at its worst, to its two surprising runs to the Stanley Cup Finals. The book recalls the exploits of characters such as Wren Blair, the firebrand ex-scout who would become the team’s first coach and general manager, and owner Norm Green, the man who moved the team to Texas in 1993, making him one of the most hated men in Minnesota. Here, too, is the tragic story of Bill Masterton, an original North Star whose death in 1968 as the result of an on-ice injury remains the only one in the history of the league. The team’s engaging history is brought to life with vivid recollections from former players and legends, including Cesare Maniago, Tom Reid, and Bobby Smith, and from journalists, broadcasters, front office executives, and faithful fans. Also including season-by-season summaries, player profiles, and statistics, Frozen in Time offers an authoritative and nostalgic look at Minnesota’s still-beloved North Stars and a bygone era of pro hockey.

Download or read book The NHL written by D'Arcy Jenish and published by Anchor Canada. This book was released on 2016-10-25 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In-depth research meets great storytelling in the history of an organization that has been a talking point and newsmaker for 100 years. The National Hockey League--born in a Montreal hotel room on November 26, 1917--has much to celebrate as it approaches its centenary. Millions of fans from Montreal to Miami and Edmonton to Anaheim attend NHL games each year, millions more watch on TV and the league pays its best players multi-million annual salaries. Over the course of its first century, the NHL's fortunes have ebbed and flowed. It has experienced setbacks and triumphs and innumerable crises. The league has awarded many franchises only to see some of them falter, fail and fold. The board of governors--which has included rich eccentrics and at least one future convict--has sometimes been fractured by men who loathed each other. How on earth has the NHL survived? The answer lies in the remarkable fact that it has had only five presidents and one commissioner. Two of these chiefs were stop-gaps. For the balance of league's ninety-plus years, four men have shaped and guided its fortunes and controlled the tough, hard-nosed, sometimes unruly owners who constituted the board of governors. This is the story of two perpetual struggles--the one on the ice and the one going on behind the scenes to keep the whole enterprise afloat. D'Arcy Jenish was granted unprecedented access to previously unpublished league files, including revelatory minutes of board meetings, and conducted dozens of hours of interviews with league executives, including commissioner Gary Bettman and former president John Ziegler, as well as well as owners, coaches, general managers and player representatives. He now reveals for the first time the true story behind some of the most significant events of the contemporary era. This is a definitive, revelatory chonicle that no serious hockey fan will want to be without.
