Download or read book When God Speaks in Parables Volume 2 written by Dami I. Olu and published by Loved Indeed Books. This book was released on 2024-04-12 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rich fool. A wayward son. A good but despised hero. A dubious but impressive manager. A persistent widow who would not be denied. What do all these characters have in common? Jesus! Jesus wove His narratives around these wildly different characters to teach us about the kingdom of God. In a world filled with so many voices struggling for attention and supremacy, the voice of Jesus echoes through the ages in the timeless parables He shared with us some 2000 years ago. Jesus Christ skillfully used storytelling as a powerful vehicle for delivering eternal and timeless truths about life, eternity, faith, religion, forgiveness, pride, greed, and many pertinent subjects. The question is: Why and how are these parables relevant to us today? This series answers the question. It promises to be an exciting and life-transforming read. Come along! This volume digs deep to reveal the hidden gems in the following powerful parables told by Jesus Christ: the Workers in the Vineyard, the Wineskins and the Garments, the Talents or Minas, the Wicked Tenants, the Ten Virgins, the Unfruitful Fig Tree, the Two Sons, the Tax Collector and the Pharisee, the Persistent Widow, and the Importunate Friend. The parables centre on the subjects of stewardship, humility, and prayer.

Book Speaking in Parables

Download or read book Speaking in Parables written by Sallie McFague and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is not only absorbingly readable but important. For its themes engage effectively with main dilemmas not only of formal theology but of current piety and witness." - Amos N. Wilder, Andover Newton Quarterly "This book is immensely valuable for its persuasive illustrations of the parabolic and metaphoric imagination. McFague attends both to the interpretive and the evaluative levels of hermeneutics. Her readings of specific parables, poems, stories, and autobiographies are insightful and relevant to her thesis that what religious language 'says' is 'conceptually imperceivable and inexpressible.'" - Mary Gerhart, Journal of the American Academy of Religion "It is at the very least a fine guide to one important direction that theological hermeneutics might take, and more than that, it testifies confidently to the presence of still unplumbed resources of the biblical word and its secular counterpart that are there for the imagination's appropriation." - Robert Detweiler, Religious Studies Review "Everyone interested in theology will be stimulated by Sallie McFague's mediating theological position and the form of thinking and discourse she espouses. Those interested in the intercourse between theology and literature will be stimulated by the way she links the two and the perceptive way she handles her literary examples. Biblical scholars will undoubtedly note her primacy of the parables as the central corpus of the biblical records. Preachers of the church will be strengthened by the concern McFague has for the Christian community and the importance of the word through the words of the preachers. With this variety of concerns, Speaking in Parables will have a deservedly wide reading and, perhaps even more important, wide discussion." - Ronald E. Sleeth, Perkins School of Theology Journal

Book Conflict and Agreement in the Church Volume 2

Download or read book Conflict and Agreement in the Church Volume 2 written by Jean Rilliet and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2024-01-25 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: T.F. Torrance's Conflict and Agreement in the Church gathers together his most influential essays and articles on topics relating to ecumenism. Himself involved heavily in the ecumenical movement, he wrote that 'ours must be the task of learning together again how to confess, like the early Church, faith in Jesus Christ as Saviour and God in all its breadth and length and height and depth, and therefore in the overflowing love of God.' Out of this conviction grew a comprehensive doctrine of the Church 'in which our differences are lost sight of because they are destroyed from behind by a masterful faith in the Saviour of men.' In the first volume, Torrance presents a set of essays engaging theologically with different denominations, along with responses to particular problems facing the ecumenical project. In particular, writing after the third world conference on faith and order, he addresses the hopes and barriers it raised to closer ecumenical relations. Throughout, Torrance's acute awareness of contrasting theological principles establishes a firm basis for further progress, without obscuring the doctrinal and ecclesiological differences that remain. In the second volume, Torrance's thought on inter-denominational cooperation in light of the Church's mission is presented. He begins by suggesting that 'the lines of conflict and agreement in the Church coincide less and less with the frontiers of the historic communions'. This opens the door for greater union between those communion, but also exposes significant challenges to unity within them. Addressing the major debates on the sacraments of baptism and the Eucharist, along with the priesthood and biblical exegesis, Torrance proposes a constructive way forward sealed by 'reconciliation in the Body and Blood of Christ'.

Book Parables as Subversive Speech

Download or read book Parables as Subversive Speech written by William R. Herzog II and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 1994-05-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Herzog shows that the focus of the parables was not on a vision of the glory of the reign of God but on the gory details of the way oppression served the interests of the ruling class. The parables were a form of social analysis, as well as a form of theological reflection. Herzog scrutinizes their canonical form to show the distinction between its purpose for Jesus and for evangelists. To do this, he uses the tools of historical criticism, including form criticism and redaction criticism.
