Book When Flying Was Fun

Download or read book When Flying Was Fun written by Bill Eads and published by America Star Books. This book was released on 2007-01-15 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Flying Was Fun! is an autobiographical collection of aviation anecdotes covering four decades of flying, starting with the sixties. These humorous and sometimes poignant stories are told from a first person perspective by the author, who was a Naval Aviator during the Vietnam War and spent over thirty years as an airline pilot with United Airlines. These memoirs relate to those days when pilots actually flew airplanes, before the days of “glass cockpits” and computer-operated flights. Those were the days when passengers dressed up in their Sunday finest for a trip to the airport to go on a flight that would take them on the adventure of their lives! This was a time when airline pilots and flight attendants looked and felt sharp as they strode to their airplanes with pride in their uniforms and the feeling that they truly were part of the most glamorous profession in America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The groundbreaking female pilot featured in the hit Broadway musical Come from Away tells her story in this high-flying and inspiring picture-book autobiography! When Beverley Bass was a young girl in the late 1950s, she told her parents she wanted to fly planes--and they told her that girls couldn't be pilots. Still, they encouraged her, and brought her to a nearby airport to watch the planes take off and land. After decades of refusing to take no for an answer, in 1986 Beverley became the first female pilot promoted to captain by American Airlines and led the first all-female crewed flight shortly thereafter. Her revolutionary career became even more newsworthy when she was forced to land in the remote town of Gander, Newfoundland, on September 11, 2001, due to US airspace closures. After several days there, she flew her crew and passengers safely home. Beverley's incredible life is now immortalized in the hit Broadway musical Come from Away. Here, discover how she went from an ambitious young girl gazing up at the sky to a groundbreaking pilot smiling down from the cockpit. "Inspiring and up, up, and away all the way."--Kirkus "An inspiring biography about one woman's determination to forge a new path."--Booklist

As you might remember, the new administration discovered vandalism and that the Ws had been removed on their computer keyboards. There was an investigation to find out who did it. It wasn’t us." "This mission was to take President Nixon’s car and support equipment to Shannon Ireland. This was not only my first flight as a copilot, but my first trip to Europe as well. It was fabulous." "The C-141 had one of the most amazing views in aviation. As I sat in the pilot’s seat I had a 180-degree view out the front of the aircraft. Book Great Moments in Flying

Download or read book Great Moments in Flying written by Joseph Conner and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Golden Valley Aero News""December 1982 Joseph B. Conner Joe writes "Conner's Corner" every month. He has been writing for Livermore Valley Airmen's Association's newsletter for several years, and his stories are now included in Golden Valley Aero News. Joe works for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and commutes""by car""from Tracy, California. In Joe's stories, we learn about Fidelia, the Varga he uses when he cruises around the valley on his excursions. Fidelia is not just any Varga. To Joe, she is a real she, an airplane with soul and personality. Reading Joe's stories, you get this feeling that he is talking about a real live being. "Conner's Corner" describes real events, things that have happened to Joe on his flights. They are cute stories so well told by Joe in his easygoing, "talking" style. Many of them have an undertone of philosophy that adds a pleasant color to the events Joe is describing. He writes in such a manner that the reader actually gets the feeling of being the pilot or passenger. Most enjoyable reading.

Book A Pilot s Story

Download or read book A Pilot s Story written by Don Volz and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is my story-the story of a pilot who flew airplanes for some thirty-seven years: ten years in the United States Air Force, primarily in jet fighters, and then twenty-seven years flying commercial jet airliners. I was inspired to write this story after reading the autobiography, a few years ago, of Gen. Chuck Yeager-he being the world-renowned test pilot, World War II fighter ace, and first man to break the sound barrier in the Bell X-1. My story is the story of an average pilot, an average guy who survived several close calls, had many interesting experiences along the way, and often wondered, "Am I still here because I was especially good or because I was especially lucky?" I think the answer is definitely a combination of the two, just as Yeager says or implies in his book. With him, it may have been a larger contribution of skill, but as he said, "The secret of my success is that I always managed to live to fly another day." I have to echo that comment. While flying around the country with American Airlines, during "hours of complete boredom" (as we say), we pilots often traded our "war stories" of our flying (and other) experiences. I often thought that I had many tales that were similar to some of Yeager's and that I should put my experiences down on paper, even if it would only be my family who might read it. So this, then, is my story, my life, primarily, as it revolved around my aviating experiences over some thirty-seven years, from the viewpoint of a pilot who has no particular claim to fame but who has survived "to fly another day." One of the best descriptions of a flying career says: "You start out with a big bag of luck and an empty bag of experience; you want to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck!" I guess I have done that.

Book The Heart of a Pilot

Download or read book The Heart of a Pilot written by Thomas Lee Bangart and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-04 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was during a time when his family was financially down that the author discovered his passion. In a county fair where it was even hard for him and his mother to experience a single ride, he found himself fascinated with only one amusement the old Curtis Robin airplane. Luckily for him, a family friend gave him the chance to ride it himself. As soon as the engine roared to life and the airplane lurched forward across the rough pasture and into the sky where he could see the beautiful view from above, he knew right then that he wanted to go flying for the rest of his life. Now in his late seventies, Bangart relives his wonderful journey through the skies and life to bring inspiration to others. In this autobiography, he reminisces his adventures as a pilot during the Great Depression, treating the reader with an inside look at growing to manhood during the first half of the twentieth century. His descriptions of the early days of Alaska bush flying, and the trials and hazards of the early airline flying are given in great detail. A person does not have to be a pilot or airplane enthusiast to enjoy this book. It covers such things as driving the Alaska-Canadian highway both in summer and winter weather, making a home in Alaska with a new bride, how government has brought many changes in our lives, and many insights into life itself. If you have been a passenger on an airliner during these early years, this book will give you a perception to what went on behind the closed cabin door where the pilots were secluded.

His miraculous survival is attributed to the structural integrity of his Burt Rutan-designed AMSOIL Racer and the stronger-than-steel composite materials used in its construction. Book Fly Girl A Memoir

Download or read book Fly Girl A Memoir written by Ann Hood and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2022-05-03 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An entertaining and fascinating memoir of “gifted storyteller” (People) Ann Hood’s adventurous years as a TWA flight attendant. In 1978, in the tailwind of the golden age of air travel, flight attendants were the epitome of glamor and sophistication. Fresh out of college and hungry to experience the world—and maybe, one day, write about it—Ann Hood joined their ranks. After a grueling job search, Hood survived TWA’s rigorous Breech Training Academy and learned to evacuate seven kinds of aircraft, deliver a baby, mix proper cocktails, administer oxygen, and stay calm no matter what the situation. In the air, Hood found both the adventure she’d dreamt of and the unexpected realities of life on the job. She carved chateaubriand in the first-class cabin and dined in front of the pyramids in Cairo, fended off passengers’ advances and found romance on layovers in London and Lisbon, and walked more than a million miles in high heels. She flew through the start of deregulation, an oil crisis, massive furloughs, and a labor strike. As the airline industry changed around her, Hood began to write—even drafting snatches of her first novel from the jump-seat. She reveals how the job empowered her, despite its roots in sexist standards. Packed with funny, moving, and shocking stories of life as a flight attendant, Fly Girl captures the nostalgia and magic of air travel at its height, and the thrill that remains with every takeoff.
