Book Growing Up on the Farm

Download or read book Growing Up on the Farm written by Richard L. Carley and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Carley's earliest memories of Sharon Mountain were of Albert Metz, whose philanthropic ideas gave many young people from all over the world, their musical start. The book describes the building of Fiddlestyx, Mr. Metz's summer music school complete with stage, practice cabins, and farm to provide the guests with food. His next memories were of Bob Metz, Mr. Metz's nephew, a role model for a young boy growing up on a farm who provided him with a positive attitude, comfort, care, and devotion following a tragic accident. Other powerful memories were of his father, a former farmer on Sharon Mountain and a First Selectman of the Town of Sharon, and of his grandfather, a builder, carpenter, and cabinet maker in Sharon. Throughout the book there are stories about things few people know about. Who ever heard of a cowpound on Sharon Mountain, or knew about the reason for the Town Poor Farm? Who knew the town of Sharon had a 3rd District one room school house located on Sharon Mountain? Who has ever heard of swimming pools for pigs? The author writes about simple things of the time such as the three different types of haymaking that don't exist today; about raising calves, working with horses for plowing fields, bringing milk to the milk stands, feeding twenty-two cats at once and about raising a bull calf for a short while before realizing it was a heifer calf, who went on to become the best milker in the herd. Funny things happened in those seventeen years; such things as a black snake he wrapped in a typewriter and a dead woodchuck he hid under the front seat of a friend's old pickup truck, a full fledged manure fight he had with his brother, and the throwing of the baby sitter's shoes out in the snow. The memories are fun, joyful and historical. This is an account of personal relationships and their effect on the history of the area.

Book Grasping at Independence

Download or read book Grasping at Independence written by Robert S. Weise and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "By closely studying the strategic blend of land ownership, subsistence agriculture, and commerce, Weise reveals how white male farmers in Floyd County attempted to achieve and preserve patriarchal authority and independence - and how this household localism laid the foundation for the region's development during the industrial era. By shifting attention from the actions of industrialists to those of local residents, he reconciles contradictory views of antebellum Appalachia and offers a new understanding of the region's history and its people."--Jacket.

Book excerpt: From the moment they first cut a swathe of crime across 1930s America, Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker have been glamorised in print, on screen and in legend. The reality of their brief and catastrophic lives is very different -- and far more fascinating. Combining exhaustive research with surprising, newly discovered material, author Jeff Guinn tells the real story of two youngsters from a filthy Dallas slum who fell in love and then willingly traded their lives for a brief interlude of excitement and, more important, fame. Thanks in great part to surviving relatives of Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker, who provided Guinn with access to never-before-published family documents and photographs, this book reveals the truth behind the myth, told with cinematic sweep and unprecedented insight by a master storyteller.

Book excerpt: "Son Of The Red Earth" is based on a story told to me in 1967. The story centers around the life of young Jorney Wilson. Starting in the early 1930s, Jorney's story is about the harsh reality of living with an alcoholic, abusive father and his struggle to keep skin and bones together for the both of them. Sold off to a neighboring farmer for the sum of fifty dollars, Jorney vows not to take another beating. He finds he has to fight back to keep that very thing from happening. With Silas Baldwin down on the ground and maybe dead, Jorney flees to a life of running and hiding, always just one step ahead of the law. From working for the Civilian Conservation Corps (C.C.C.) to running moonshine whisky, Jorney finds a way to get by and makes some lasting friendships along the way. When he finds the girl of his dreams, it seems everything is going to work out alright after all. But then Carl Betterman of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BOCI) manages to capture him with a truck load of moonshine whisky. When he finds himself on trial for murder, the darkest days of his young life are ahead of him. Jorney Wilson was truly born of the red earth, thus the title of this book. Follow him as he tries to make a life for himself and find justice and vindication for a crime he didn't commit. Share his adventures as he roams the countryside and helps make history in the young and growing state of Oklahoma. Sit with him in the dark cells of the Atoka County Jail as he awaits his trial for murder. Live with him as he fights to be free as a "Son of the Red Earth".

Download or read book Time to Lay by written by Jay Mondy and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2010-12 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time To Lay By, is a collection of short stories, some humorous, some bizarre, but all true. For centuries storytellers were the only source of history. They told their tales, preserving history by handing their stories down from generation to generation. Without the storyteller, much of history would have been lost. Time To Lay By, recounts a way of life that was common in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Southeastern Kansas in the not too distant past. Once again, a part of history has been saved throught the words of the storyteller. There are stories of legal hangings, western men, moonshiners, bootlegging and many other topics too numerous to mention. These long ago stories are as they occurred back in days lost in the pages of time. They add to our knowledge of a fasciniating region and a way of life nearly forgotten. This book isn't just for the historians, but for anyone who is curious about the past or simply love a good book.
