Book The Bald Eagle The Improbable Journey of America s Bird

Download or read book The Bald Eagle The Improbable Journey of America s Bird written by Jack E. Davis and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best Books of the Month: Wall Street Journal, Kirkus Reviews From the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Gulf, a sweeping cultural and natural history of the bald eagle in America. The bald eagle is regal but fearless, a bird you’re not inclined to argue with. For centuries, Americans have celebrated it as “majestic” and “noble,” yet savaged the living bird behind their national symbol as a malicious predator of livestock and, falsely, a snatcher of babies. Taking us from before the nation’s founding through inconceivable resurgences of this enduring all-American species, Jack E. Davis contrasts the age when native peoples lived beside it peacefully with that when others, whether through hunting bounties or DDT pesticides, twice pushed Haliaeetus leucocephalus to the brink of extinction. Filled with spectacular stories of Founding Fathers, rapacious hunters, heroic bird rescuers, and the lives of bald eagles themselves—monogamous creatures, considered among the animal world’s finest parents—The Bald Eagle is a much-awaited cultural and natural history that demonstrates how this bird’s wondrous journey may provide inspiration today, as we grapple with environmental peril on a larger scale.

Book excerpt: She's been called headstrong. She's been called opinionated. Hell, she's been called everything in the book, and now, in this fourth mystery in the acclaimed series, the outlaw Jesse James rides again. It's springtime in upstate New York, where the lilacs are in bloom and love is all around—even for Jessica James, full-time investigative reporter and part-time fool. Well, why shouldn't she be? Everyone else is in love: her mother, still honeymooning with the mischievous Charlie Browne; and her sometime lover, mobster Marcus Andrelli, who seems to have forgotten Jesse and taken up with another woman. For Jesse, though, love is literally in the air, with a handsome pilot named Mac Devlin. The mystery starts simply, and in Jesse's never-dull world, that's a feat. A mysterious man is shadowing Mac, and the reporter instinct in Jesse takes over. What does this stranger want, and how does it involve her mother's elusive new husband, who disappears as quickly as he appears, always with Jesse's mom in tow? Mac and Jesse team up—reluctantly at first—to find the vanished newlyweds. Together, they are drawn into a perilous and deadly game of blackmail and secrets from the past, where the high-flying stakes mean life or death.

Book excerpt: Tom Lasino, army veteran and college physics professor, has his mundane life turned upside down when he is contacted by a CIA agent. Tom is recruited to become part of a top-secret mission. He receives a briefing aboard a yacht anchored off Maryland's Tilghman Island. At the briefing Tom discovers that the CIA agent is Jennifer Blake, a long ago friend with whom he had lost all contact. The CIA, Tom learns, has uncovered a terrorist nuclear plot that will be unleashed somewhere in the United States, and Kurt Hansen, a former nuclear artillery soldier turned criminal soon to be released from Leavenworth, is behind the plot. Tom, after much weapons and martial arts training in addition to intense intelligence briefings, is inserted into Leavenworth prison as a prisoner. He is to befriend Hansen, learn what he can about Hansen's plot, and connect with him again when they are released from prison in a month. In prison Tom learns how much hatred Hansen has for the United States and it's government. Upon their release Tom continues to play the role, but also begins to develop an intense relationship with Jennifer. Tom and the entire team of six use their collective wits to discover the location and details of Hansen's plot, but their discoveries come at a high cost for all the key players. The many twists and turns in Eagles Don't Die keep you guessing to the very end. This fictional story, which brings the reader face to face with the reality of terror and homeland security, is based on an incident that actually occurred in 1971 involving a nuclear military device. Today's world events make this a very timely tale. Eagles Don't Die won First Prize in the Action-Adventure Category of the 2006 Maryland Writers' Association International Novel Contest.

Download or read book RSPB Spotlight Eagles written by Mike Unwin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-07-28 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eagles are among the most impressive hunters of the animal world. Their predatory prowess and flying skills have imbued them with a romance and mystique that runs deep in our culture and has elevated them to emblems of freedom and power across the globe. At the same time, however, people have long seen eagles as competitors. Reviled by farmers and gamekeepers as snatchers of livestock, many species have been driven into decline by persecution and disturbance. Two species of eagle occur in Britain - among 60 worldwide - and are the focus of this book. The regal Golden Eagle is the definitive 'true' eagle and occurs in wilderness areas across the northern hemisphere; the even larger White-tailed Eagle, reintroduced to the UK after historic extinction, belongs to the separate 'sea eagles' genus. These two spectacular birds are both very rare – confined largely to the remote Scottish Highlands – and a sighting of either is one of the UK's most exciting and sought-after wildlife experiences. This highly readable study looks separately at both UK eagles, exploring how each is adapted as an apex predator in its own environment, and explores the relationship between the two. Separate chapters cover all aspects of the birds' biology and lifestyle, from defending their vast territories to raising their young. Fascinating secrets are revealed, including the brutal truth behind 'Cain and Abel' syndrome. The book also takes a look at other eagles around the world, placing the two UK species within this broader context. Finally, it examines the complex relationship that humans have enjoyed with eagles since time immemorial, spanning both culture and conservation, and offers expert tips on where and how you can watch these magnificent birds for yourself. The Spotlight series introduces readers to the lives and behaviours of our favourite animals with eye-catching, colour photography and informative expert text.

Book The Humane Economy

  • ISBN : 0062389661
  • Pages : 346 pages

Download or read book The Humane Economy written by Wayne Pacelle and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major new exploration of the economics of animal exploitation and a practical roadmap for how we can use the marketplace to promote the welfare of all living creatures, from the renowned animal-rights advocate Wayne Pacelle, President/CEO of the Humane Society of the United States and New York Times bestselling author of The Bond. In the mid-nineteenth century, New Bedford, Massachusetts was the whaling capital of the world. A half-gallon of sperm oil cost approximately $1,400 in today’s dollars, and whale populations were hunted to near extinction for profit. But with the advent of fossil fuels, the whaling industry collapsed, and today, the area around New Bedford is instead known as one of the best places in the world for whale watching. This transformation is emblematic of a new sort of economic revolution, one that has the power to transform the future of animal welfare. In The Humane Economy, Wayne Pacelle, President/CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, explores how our everyday economic decisions impact the survival and wellbeing of animals, and how we can make choices that better support them. Though most of us have never harpooned a sea creature, clubbed a seal, or killed an animal for profit, we are all part of an interconnected web that has a tremendous impact on animal welfare, and the decisions we make—whether supporting local, not industrial, farming; adopting a rescue dog or a shelter animal instead of one from a “puppy mill”; avoiding products that compromise the habitat of wild species; or even seeing Cirque du Soleil instead of Ringling Brothers—do matter. The Humane Economy shows us how what we do everyday as consumers can benefit animals, the environment, and human society, and why these decisions can make economic sense as well.
