Book Explaining the Evidence

  • Author : David A. Lagnado
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2021-10-21
  • ISBN : 1009063944
  • Pages : 327 pages

Download or read book Explaining the Evidence written by David A. Lagnado and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we make sense of complex evidence? What are the cognitive principles that allow detectives to solve crimes, and lay people to puzzle out everyday problems? To address these questions, David Lagnado presents a novel perspective on human reasoning. At heart, we are causal thinkers driven to explain the myriad ways in which people behave and interact. We build mental models of the world, enabling us to infer patterns of cause and effect, linking words to deeds, actions to effects, and crimes to evidence. But building models is not enough; we need to evaluate these models against evidence, and we often struggle with this task. We have a knack for explaining, but less skill at evaluating. Fortunately, we can improve our reasoning by reflecting on inferential practices and using formal tools. This book presents a system of rational inference that helps us evaluate our models and make sounder judgments.

Book A Fire Strikes the Chicago Stock Yards

Download or read book A Fire Strikes the Chicago Stock Yards written by John F Hogan and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2019-09-23 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling history chronicles some of the most intense and tragic fires in Chicago’s storied meatpacking district. Chicago’s Union Stock Yards made the city “the hog butcher of the world,” but the notoriety came at a grievous cost. From their opening on Christmas Day of 1865 to their final closure in July of 1971, The Yards were the site of nearly three hundred extra-alarm fires. That infamous history includes some of the most disastrous conflagrations of a city famous for fire. In 1910, twenty-one firemen and three civilians were killed in a blaze at a beef warehouse—the largest death toll for an organized fire department in the nation prior to 9/11. The meatpackers who ran the yards considered the constant threat of fire as part of the cost of doing business, shrugging it off with an, “It’s all right, we're fully covered.” For the firefighters who were forced to plunge into the flames again and again, it was an entirely different matter.

Neither does his unwanted attraction to her. Meanwhile, escalating incidents confirm that she’s far from safe. Lily fears letting the surprisingly gentle retired marine into her life almost as much as she fears whoever is threatening her. As Wisconsin farmers edge toward another milk strike, one that will surely turn violent, it becomes clear that the plot against Lily may be part of a much larger conspiracy. Book excerpt: Bill’s life went from monotonous to stimulating in just a week. In that short time, two deadly arson fires put Bill’s skill as a fire fighter to work assisting in the investigation. His involvement in these fires wakes up some purposely buried memories of a broken marriage thirty years ago, a heart break that still affects him years later. While helping with the investigation of these fires, the team Bill is on gets side swiped by an unmannered FBI agent, who seizes all of the team’s efforts at solving the crimes. Determined to give his community closure, Bill and the team continue clandestinely to find the culprit. In the meantime, a young man comes to town and is quickly assimilated into the community. The young man, actually a FBI agent in disguise, soon realizes that what his boss told him about the arson fires was not exactly true. Meanwhile the perpetrator of the arson fires follows a strange calling to return to the area of the deadly arson fires. A series of wildland arson fires hits the area, while a beautiful young woman named Diana starts visiting the town’s favorite bar and starts an affair with the young FBI agent. Wanting a spectacular fire to watch from the camera on board a hexcopter drone, the arsonist picks a perfect setting to start a wildfire, but the fire turns deadly and kills three fire fighters. As the young FBI agent, Bill, and a woman police officer start to zero in on the elusive arsonist, the town becomes embroiled in a deadly battle to save the life of Diana. The town’s people, providing help to the outnumbered law enforcement officers, beat back numerous attempts on Diana’s life by hitmen from Diana’s family. In the midst of fighting, Bill not only becomes a hero twice over, but he learns what happened to his wife and discovers who the arsonist really is.

Book The Great Cowboy Strike

Download or read book The Great Cowboy Strike written by Mark Lause and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When cowboys were workers and battled their bosses In the pantheon of American icons, the cowboy embodies the traits of “rugged individualism,” independent, solitary, and stoical. In reality, cowboys were grossly exploited and underpaid seasonal workers, who responded to the abuses of their employers in a series of militant strikes. Their resistance arose from the rise and demise of a “beef bonanza” that attracted international capital. Business interests approached the market with the expectation that it would have the same freedom to brutally impose its will as it had exercised on native peoples and the recently emancipated African Americans. These assumptions contributed to a series of bitter and violent “range wars,” which broke out from Texas to Montana and framed the appearance of labor conflicts in the region. These social tensions stirred a series of political insurgencies that became virtually endemic to the American West of the Gilded Age. Mark A. Lause explores the relationship between these neglected labor conflicts, the “range wars,” and the third-party movements. The Great Cowboy Strike subverts American mythology to reveal the class abuses and inequalities that have blinded a nation to its true history and nature
