Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here are practical ideas and help for dealing with problems of sexuality in residential treatment settings. On a day-to-day level, difficulties can arise from the need for child care workers to maintain caring and personal relationships with children in the face of the children’s and their own sexuality. Children themselves also may have difficulties in properly expressing their sexuality. The Management of Sexuality in Residential Treatment examines a broad range of problems that often occur and describes several treatment programs and strategies for coping with incidents of abuse or alleged abuse. Chapters in the book address issues pertinent for professionals working with children in residential treatment. Authors cover topics such as: residents’needs for love versus sexuality the impact of sexually stimulating materials erotic countertransference in a residential treatment center survey of minor sex problems in the milieu and how to respond to them personal relationships between residents and staff The book also describes two treatment programs for abused or abusing children. The first is an eight week multimodal therapeutic program for adolescent girls who have been sexually abused, the other a course for sexually abusive boys that includes counseling, sex education, and journal writing. The Management of Sexuality in Residential Treatment is a valuable resource for the staff of residential treatment centers, group homes, residential schools, and hospital pediatric units who wish to understand how to deal more effectively with issues of sexuality and the children for whom they care.

Book New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research

Download or read book New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2014-03-25 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year, child protective services receive reports of child abuse and neglect involving six million children, and many more go unreported. The long-term human and fiscal consequences of child abuse and neglect are not relegated to the victims themselves-they also impact their families, future relationships, and society. In 1993, the National Research Council (NRC) issued the report, Under-standing Child Abuse and Neglect, which provided an overview of the research on child abuse and neglect. New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research updates the 1993 report and provides new recommendations to respond to this public health challenge. According to this report, while there has been great progress in child abuse and neglect research, a coordinated, national research infrastructure with high-level federal support needs to be established and implemented immediately. New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research recommends an actionable framework to guide and support future child abuse and neglect research. This report calls for a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to child abuse and neglect research that examines factors related to both children and adults across physical, mental, and behavioral health domains-including those in child welfare, economic support, criminal justice, education, and health care systems-and assesses the needs of a variety of subpopulations. It should also clarify the causal pathways related to child abuse and neglect and, more importantly, assess efforts to interrupt these pathways. New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research identifies four areas to look to in developing a coordinated research enterprise: a national strategic plan, a national surveillance system, a new generation of researchers, and changes in the federal and state programmatic and policy response.

Download or read book Elder Mistreatment written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-02-06 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late 1970s when Congressman Claude Pepper held widely publicized hearings on the mistreatment of the elderly, policy makers and practitioners have sought ways to protect older Americans from physical, psychological, and financial abuse. Yet, during the last 20 years fewer than 50 articles have addressed the shameful problem that abusersâ€"and sometimes the abused themselvesâ€"want to conceal. Elder Mistreatment in an Aging America takes a giant step toward broadening our understanding of the mistreatment of the elderly and recommends specific research and funding strategies that can be used to deepen it. The book includes a discussion of the conceptual, methodological, and logistical issues needed to create a solid research base as well as the ethical concerns that must be considered when working with older subjects. It also looks at problems in determination of a report's reliability and the role of physicians, EMTs, and others who are among the first to recognize situations of mistreatment. Elder Mistreatment in an Aging America will be of interest to anyone concerned about the elderly and ways to intervene when abuse is suspected, including family members, caregivers, and advocates for the elderly. It will also be of interest to researchers, research sponsors, and policy makers who need to know how to advance our knowledge of this problem.

It addresses major challenges in child maltreatment work, starting with “What is child abuse and neglect?” and then examines why maltreatment occurs and what are its consequences. The handbook also addresses prevention, intervention, investigation, treatment as well as civil and criminal legal perspectives. It comprehensively studies the issue from the perspective of a broader, international and cross-cultural human experience. Apart from a thorough revision of existing chapters, this edition includes many new chapters covering recent developments in this area and other issues not covered in the first edition. There is more focus on substance abuse, psychological abuse, and on social and community involvement and public health provisions in the prevention of child maltreatment. The handbook examines what is known now and more importantly what remains to be researched in the coming decades to help abused and neglected children, their families and their communities, thereby taking the field forward.

Book Preventing Abuse and Neglect in the Lives of Children with Disabilities

Download or read book Preventing Abuse and Neglect in the Lives of Children with Disabilities written by E. Paula Crowley and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-02 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the development of our understanding of the abuse and neglect in the lives of children with disabilities. Disabilities in childhood uniquely dispose children for their abuse and neglect. Additionally, abuse and neglect dispose children for disabilities. The care and education of children with disabilities requires unique knowledge and skills and so does the consideration of their abuse and neglect. This book is based on data generated from an analysis of cases involving the abuse and neglect of children with disabilities as well as on an analysis of the data based literature in this area. Readers are provided with analysis and reflection exercises throughout the text so that they may analyze and reflect on their own awareness of the abuse and neglect of children with disabilities. Each chapter also contains a set of implications for research and practice. The final chapter focuses directly on prevention. Caregivers and professionals across disciplines will develop a new understanding of their roles in universal, secondary, and tertiary level prevention that is targeted, focused, data-based, and designed to prevent the abuse and neglect of children with disabilities in the first place.
