Book excerpt: This book is about the life of five black children who were raised in the ghetto and who were subjected to abusive hands. I can recall so many times I was beaten, but those that I’m sharing are some of the worst ones from my memory. Verbal and mental abuse was an everyday event. Three of us survived and are still alive today to tell the story. I hope that by sharing my story, I can help someone else. Please speak up if you suspect abuse; do not look the other way. Book Shadow Standing over Me the Trials and Tribulations of a Ghetto Child

Download or read book Shadow Standing over Me the Trials and Tribulations of a Ghetto Child written by Lady J and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2017-04-26 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have always considered Hamilton, Ohio home. It is were I was born, raised and been through a struggle, yet I still consider it home. I was that one child. That one child who, despite circumstances, pain and sorrow, have preservered and triumphed. While they may not be what you would call triumphs, they are still mine and that through it all - I stand tall and confident in who I am and I LOVE ME and all that I am. This is my story. And for all the time that a story was told about myself, this will shed the light on the truth from the beginning. Some will love it, some will like it and some will hate it and be angry - The truth tends to bring that out in folks. My story is to be an open and living testimony that no matter where you live, what circumstances you are born into, what trials you have gone through - YOU CAN MAKE IT! If you want to...life is bittersweet for me, I learned the hard way that only the strong will survive...life WILL kick you in the teeth - either you will stay down, cry and whine about it or get up, rinse out your mouth, put ice on it and keep it moving. Please see my story as a cautionary tale of how to be a better advocate and protector of your children, make better life choices, always keep moving and despite the hard times, God always looks out and protect those who believe. God Bless, Lady J

Download or read book American Apartheid written by Douglas Massey and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1998-07-15 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This powerful and disturbing book clearly links persistent poverty among blacks in the United States to the unparalleled degree of deliberate segregation they experience in American cities. American Apartheid shows how the black ghetto was created by whites during the first half of the twentieth century in order to isolate growing urban black populations. It goes on to show that, despite the Fair Housing Act of 1968, segregation is perpetuated today through an interlocking set of individual actions, institutional practices, and governmental policies. In some urban areas the degree of black segregation is so intense and occurs in so many dimensions simultaneously that it amounts to “hypersegregation.” Douglas Massey and Nancy Denton demonstrate that this systematic segregation of African Americans leads inexorably to the creation of underclass communities during periods of economic downturn. Under conditions of extreme segregation, any increase in the overall rate of black poverty yields a marked increase in the geographic concentration of indigence and the deterioration of social and economic conditions in black communities. As ghetto residents adapt to this increasingly harsh environment under a climate of racial isolation, they evolve attitudes, behaviors, and practices that further marginalize their neighborhoods and undermine their chances of success in mainstream American society. This book is a sober challenge to those who argue that race is of declining significance in the United States today.

Book The Spirit of the Ghetto

Download or read book The Spirit of the Ghetto written by Hutchins Hapgood and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1902, and illustrated by Jacob Epstein, this evocation of the spiritual and cultural life of Yiddish New York remains fresh and relevant, and an invaluable commentary on one aspect of the formation of modern America. To an extent unequaled by any outsider before him, Hutchins Hapgood, a descendant of generations of New England Yankees, succeeded in penetrating the inner life of an American immigrant community. Hapgood did not set out to reform and cleanse the ghetto. His aim was to understand and interpret it, to find and know its poets, scholars, dramatists, actors, and artists, as well as its merchants and businessmen. He presents real people, individually identified and described, working out their destiny as part of a vital Jewish world. The sensibility and intentions of this book, as the editor points out, "anticipated a period of unexampled American artistic and intellectual gusto and creativity." Moses Rischin's discerning and affectionate introduction places Hapgood's neglected classic squarely in the mainstream of American cultural development.
