Book Wheeling s Polonia

Download or read book Wheeling s Polonia written by William Hal Gorby and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Hal Gorby's study of Wheeling's Polish community weaves together stories of immigrating, working, and creating a distinctly Polish American community, or Polonia, in the heart of the upper Ohio Valley steel industry. It addresses major topics in the history of the United States in the first half of the twentieth century, while shifting from urban historians' traditional focus on large cities to a case study in a smaller Appalachian setting. Wheeling was a center of West Virginia's labor movement, and Polish immigrants became a crucial element within the city's active working-class culture. Arriving at what was also the center of the state's Roman Catholic Diocese, Poles built religious and fraternal institutions to support new arrivals and to seek solace in times of economic strain and family hardship. The city's history of crime and organized vice also affected new immigrants, who often lived in neighborhoods targeted for selective enforcement of Prohibition. At once a deeply textured evocation of the city's ethnic institutions and an engagement with larger questions about belonging, change, and justice, Wheeling's Polonia is an inspiring account of a diverse working-class culture and the immigrants who built it.

Book Reading in the Dark

Download or read book Reading in the Dark written by Jessica R. McCort and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2016-04-28 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions by Rebecca A. Brown, Justine Gieni, Holly Harper, Emily L. Hiltz, A. Robin Hoffman, Kirsten Kowalewski, Peter C. Kunze, Jorie Lagerwey, Nick Levey, Jessica R. McCort, and Janani Subramanian Dark novels, shows, and films targeted toward children and young adults are proliferating wildly. It is even more crucial now to understand the methods by which such texts have traditionally operated and how those methods have been challenged, abandoned, and appropriated. Reading in the Dark fills a gap in criticism devoted to children's popular culture by concentrating on horror, an often-neglected genre. These scholars explore the intersection between horror, popular culture, and children's cultural productions, including picture books, fairy tales, young adult literature, television, and monster movies. Reading in the Dark looks at horror texts for children with deserved respect, weighing the multitude of benefits they can provide for young readers and viewers. Refusing to write off the horror genre as campy, trite, or deforming, these essays instead recognize many of the texts and films categorized as "scary" as among those most widely consumed by children and young adults. In addition, scholars consider how adult horror has been domesticated by children's literature and culture, with authors and screenwriters turning that which was once horrifying into safe, funny, and delightful books and films. Scholars likewise examine the impetus behind such re-envisioning of the adult horror novel or film as something appropriate for the young. The collection investigates both the constructive and the troublesome aspects of scary books, movies, and television shows targeted toward children and young adults. It considers the complex mechanisms by which these texts communicate overt messages and hidden agendas, and it treats as well the readers' experiences of such mechanisms.

Book Wheeling Decorating Co

Download or read book Wheeling Decorating Co written by James Webster and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wheeling Decorating Company of Wheeling, West Virginia, was one of the outstanding companies that decorated china, pottery and porcelain during the first half of the 20th century. This company, often referred to as WDCO or Wheeling, decorated items (purchased blanks) from more than 500 companies around the world. The wide range of designs used by Wheeling is the work of a team of skilled craftsmen who sometimes added the Wheeling logo to their pieces, but often did not. Because many pieces were not marked, there has been a need for a reference on this company, and Collector Books is proud to publish the first. People who are glass collectors from America's glass belt along and close to the Ohio River will find this WDCO book to be of particular help in identifying etched gold and enameled items they might have in their collections. Filled with more than 550 detailed photographs, pricing information, and historical data.
