Book excerpt: "An elegant, wise book of love in action." -- Deepak Chopra "These stories will inspire you." -- Gabrielle Bernstein, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Universe Has Your Back HumanKind is the heartwarming feel-good book that we all need right now. Brad Aronson's life changed in an instant when his wife, Mia, was diagnosed with leukemia. After her diagnosis, Brad spent most of the next two and a half years either by her side as she received treatment or trying to shield their five-year-old son, Jack, from the worst of Mia's illness. Amid the stress and despair of waiting for the treatment to work, Brad and Mia were met by an outpouring of kindness from friends, family and even complete strangers. Inspired by the many demonstrations of "humankindness" that supported their family through Mia's recovery, Brad began writing about the people who rescued his family from that dark time, often with the smallest of gestures. But he didn't stop there. Knowing that simple acts of kindness transform lives across the globe every day, he sought out these stories and shares some of the best ones here. In HumanKind, you'll meet the mentor who changed a child's life with a single lesson in shoe tying, the six-year-old who launched a global kindness movement, the band of seamstress grandmothers who mend clothes for homeless people, and many other heroes. Brad also provides dozens of ways you can make a difference through the simplest words and deeds. You'll discover how buying someone a meal or sharing a little encouragement at the right time can change someone's world, as well as your own. The resource section at the back of the book provides guidance and organizations that will help you channel and amplify your own acts of kindness. Here you'll discover: How you can fund a surgery to cure someone's blindness with a donation of less than $200. Organizations through which you can provide a birthday gift for a child who otherwise wouldn't receive one. Multiple places where you can send letters of encouragement to support hospitalized kids, lonely seniors, refugees, veterans and others in need. And over fifty more ways you can change a life. HumanKind will leave you grateful for what you have and provide a refuge from the negativity that surrounds us. This feel-good book will touch your heart. You'll laugh, you'll cry and you'll be reminded of what really matters. All author royalties go to Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Centuries before Spensa looked skyward from the planet Detritus—back on Old Earth before it was lost—Jason Write faced a crucial question: was humanity ready to join galactic society? When faster-than-light communications were discovered by a small telephone company in 2071, alien species such as the Tenasi and Varvax overheard them and came to visit Earth. Because the Phone Company controls all communications with the aliens, their operatives like Jason operate above the law. Now, on the space platform Evensong, one of the Phone Company’s scientists has gone missing before surfacing in a hospital with amnesia, and Jason is sent to investigate. Right as he arrives, the body of a murdered Varvax ambassador is discovered, sure to cause a galactic incident. Coln Abrams of the United Intelligence Bureau seizes the opportunity to investigate Jason as he deals with the crisis. This could be the UIB’s chance to discover the Phone Company’s secrets—how does FTL communication work, and what is Jason hiding? Winner of Spain’s UPC Award for Science Fiction in 2007.

Book What My Wheelchair Taught Me

Download or read book What My Wheelchair Taught Me written by Lisa Dianne Jones and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2019-09-03 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lisa Jones made a conscious choice to disregard what fate might have chosen for her, instead embracing and consistently using her free will to the maximum. What My Wheelchair Taught Me is about Lisa Jones, soulmate to others and how she has led her normal life, but it is also about Lisa Jones, the woman with a disability, and how her life has been shaped by disability and the world’s reaction to it. What My Wheelchair Taught Me seeks to change people’s perceptions and beliefs about people with disabilities by showing the impact Jones’ disability has had on her life, and by revealing insights into how people with disabilities are treated and why. We need to see people first for what they can do, not what they cannot do. Her writing shows readers with disabilities the true range of possibilities they have by giving a gentle push to live their own authentic lives, making their own life decisions, and achieving possibilities despite their disability. This change in perception can lead to seeing disability as an inconvenience to be managed, not as an unchangeable life sentence. People with disabilities can experience a rich range of human experiences that our culture doesn’t consider normal or necessary for people, especially women, with disabilities. Even if we have a disability, we can still do whatever we would like or want to do, just maybe not in the same way as everyone else. No one needs to be judged solely or primarily based on the things they are unable to do.

Book Wheelchairs Scooters and Sticks

Download or read book Wheelchairs Scooters and Sticks written by Terry Reynolds and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-04-20 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wheelchairs, scooters, and sticks all things to do with mobility and access. My involvement in working with disability was purely by accident, and profit was my motive which you will read about in the book. However, it went much further as I could see that the more access, the better it was for everyone not just the wheelchair user. The mother with a pram or pushchair, the blind or restricted vision, and of course, the biggest emerging market of older people. So if you could show businesses they could make more money by providing access, they would get more customers and everyone would benefit. I have spent over forty-three years providing accessible transport and holidays; and to this day, find it difficult to understand some peoples attitude toward disabled people, especially in business. I was the first to provide accessible coaches commercially in the UK; I remember being asked by another coach operator if we could supply a coach to accompany his on an outing to the coast, which we did. The next day, he contacted me and said that his client had rang him, and said not to send any of those disabled coaches again. I told him, it was not disabled it was accessible. Even if I had not been in this business, I would not have thought about my coach as they had. Although things are a lot better now, integration is still a long way off, as you will read throughout the book. It is up to us all to look at a much wider aspect of access, as disability or a reduced mobility all need access. You will also read that tourism is the largest business in many countries; and the more access you have in transport and accommodation, the more people you will attract, and of course the money will follow. My aim is for more integration, and I am hoping to run some British history tours later where inclusion from overseas will achieve this and be the first for the UK. People now working in the tourist industry are starting to get more aware of what is needed in transport and hotels, as well as excursion venues. All these things will in the end add up to more inclusion in all things, not just holidays.
