Book excerpt: Robert M. Keating's story is America's story. Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1862 to poor Irish immigrants, he was just 13 when his father died suddenly. A precocious boy with a knack for mechanics, Keating filed his first patent at 22, started his own bicycle company at 28, and at 32 was producing one of the most innovative bicycle lines in the world in a state-of-the-art factory. Along the way he flirted with baseball, briefly playing in the major leagues and patenting the game's rubberized home plate. In early 1901 Keating developed and marketed a ground-breaking motorcycle before either Indian or Harley-Davidson, and later successfully sued both companies for patent infringement. His company also manufactured automobiles beginning in 1898, producing both electric and gasoline powered vehicles. At the time of his death at 59, Keating held 49 patents--everything from bicycle and motorcycle designs to lunch-chairs to a modern flushing device for toilets. This book tells the story of Keating and his Keating Wheel Company, a Gilded Age story of unbridled inventiveness that encapsulates America's transformation into a society that would forever move on wheels.

Book Selling the Wheel

Download or read book Selling the Wheel written by Jeff Cox and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2001-01-24 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selling the Wheel is a fascinating story about sales and marketing written in the form of an ancient parable: Once upon a time, long ago, a resourceful fellow named Max came up with a brilliant idea and invented the Wheel. But human beings, who had been getting along without the Wheel for thousands of years, did not instantly appreciate their need for this clever invention.... This is the challenge facing Max, as dramatized by Jeff Cox, coauthor of the bestselling business novels Zapp! and The Goal, Selling the Wheel is based on the pioneering research of Howard Stevens's employment-testing and customer-research firm, the H. R. Chally Group. In the story, Max and his wife, Minnie, learn what it takes to market the Wheel. With the help of Ozzie the Oracle, they discover four essential selling styles -- Closer, Wizard, Relationship Builder, and Captain & Crew -- and come to understand how each style is suited to a different type of salesperson. They learn that as markets evolve, selling styles and strategies must change. There is no single right way -- and no company can be all things to all people. This critical lesson is as valuable to salespeople as it is to sales managers. Writer Jeff Cox has the amazing gift for translating technical ideas into creative, engaging stories, and his collaboration with sales and marketing expert Howard Stevens is based on empirical research collected from 250,000 salespeople, more than 1,500 people in corporate sales, and interviews with more than 100,000 actual customers who rated the strengths and weaknesses of the salespeople serving them. Packed with practical tips for salespeople, entrepreneurs, marketing managers, and business students, Selling the Wheel is an irresistible guide to sales styles, strategies, and markets.

  • Publisher : iUniverse

Download or read book Life Behind the Wheel written by Clay Brooklin and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty years now running, uniform is turning gray, Resistance to the window not hindering the way. Windshield and wipers tuned to living key. The road to Bridgeton calling; its tree line speaks to me Clay Brooklin spends the majority of his days behind the wheel of a bus. In his first collection of poetry, he offers a whimsical glimpse into his daily observations as well as his imagination as he introduces several entertaining fictional characters. From a cotton ball highway to an eerie lake house and a misty fog in the early morning hours, Brooklin leads others down a poetic path where he paints a vivid picture of life and nature outside his bus window. Included are silly dillies that highlight an amusing group of characters that include Taylor the Nailer, whose rather hairy wife is a sailor; Gordon Morgan, who steals a pipe organ and uses it as a sled; and Cactus Clem, who climbs out on a limb to see how far he can go. In this unique collection of poetry, a New Jersey bus driver reflects on nature, people, and his surroundings as the world passes by his window.

Book Prediction of the Slope climbing Capability of Elastic rim Wheels

Download or read book Prediction of the Slope climbing Capability of Elastic rim Wheels written by Klaus W. Wiendieck and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new semiempirical approach was attempted to predict the slope-climbing capability of wheels. The approach consisted of determining the pull performance of flexible wheels on yielding slopes by two extrapolations: one starting from the theoretically known pull performance of flexible wheels on unyielding slopes, and the other from experimentally determined performance of rigid wheels on yielding, level ground. The result is a prediction equation for the available pull of elastic-rim wheels (as a particularly simple case of pneumatic tires) on deformable, inclined soils in terms of soil deformability, cohesion, and internal friction; wheel flexibility and load; and slope angle.
