Book Wheat In The Third World

Download or read book Wheat In The Third World written by Haldore Hanson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-28 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many developing countries have adopted new wheat production techniques to expand food supplies, but opportunities for raising output further and improving farmers' livelihoods remain great. In this book, three internationally recognized experts associated with the International Center for Maize and Wheat Improvement (CIMMYT) address decision makers in developing countries and international agencies, providing essential information about the prospects for increasing wheat productivity. The authors examine the characteristics of the wheat plant as a crop and as a food, explore recent scientific findings related to producing and handling the crop and suggest important areas for future research. They also look at specific wheat production problems and potentials in eight countries and propose means of organizing and operating an effective national wheat program. The book closes with a forecast of the outlook for food, wheat, and population to the end of the century.

Book Wheat Production in Changing Environments

Download or read book Wheat Production in Changing Environments written by Mirza Hasanuzzaman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 685 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents recent advances in global wheat crop research, including the effects of abiotic stresses like high and low temperatures, drought, hypoxia, salinity, heavy metals, nutrient deficiency, and toxicity on wheat production. It also highlights various approaches to alleviate the damaging effects of abiotic stress on wheat as well as advanced approaches to develop abiotic-stress-tolerant wheat crops. Wheat is probably one of the world’s most important cereals; it is a staple food in more than 40 countries, and because of its adaptability is cultivated in almost every region. Global wheat production has more than doubled in the last 50 years due to higher yields. However, despite their high yield potential, modern wheat cultivars are often subject to crop loss due to the abiotic stresses. As such, plant breeders have long aimed to improve tolerance in order to maintain yield. Written by 85 experts, and offering the latest insights into wheat responses and tolerance to various abiotic stresses, it is a valuable tool for agronomists, plant breeders, plant physiologists and students in the field of plant science and agriculture. It is the first book to comprehensively cover past and current abiotic stress problems and tolerance mechanisms.

Book Bangladesh and the CGIAR Centers

Download or read book Bangladesh and the CGIAR Centers written by Carl Pray and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collaboration between the international agricultural research centers and the national agricultural research system of Bangladesh has been very important to the growth of agricultural research and agricultural productivity in Bangladesh. The collaboration started in 1966 with the beginning of the International Rice Research Institute's (IRRI) relationship with the Agricultural Research Institute and has involved a number of activities. These activities have involved researching crops and posting center researchers in Bangladesh to work with local researchers on local problems, regular visits by center staff, training programs at the centers or run by the centers, joint programs of germplasm testing and publications. The outcome of this collaboration has been more food production and probably improved income distribution. Modern varieties of rice and wheat have increased the demand for labor, which benefits the landless laborers who are the poorest group in Bangladesh. Increased food production has reduced the real price of foodgrains, which primarily benefits poorer consumers both in the cities and the countryside.
