Book Report on Rust Or Mildew on Wheat Plants 1892 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Report on Rust Or Mildew on Wheat Plants 1892 Classic Reprint written by Great Britain; Board of Agriculture and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on Rust or Mildew on Wheat Plants, 1892 The Board of Agriculture, having had repeatedly brought under their notice the extensive losses sustained by agriculturists from the presence of Rust or Mildew in wheat, have deemed it desirable to publish the following summary of the information collected in the summer of 1892 from various observers of the circumstances of this year's attack in different parts of England. In order, at the same time, to place before wheat growers the conclusions of former investigations, and the results of the more recent researches into this matter abroad, and in order to recall attention to the leading features of the life history of this destructive and widely-prevalent fungus, Mr. Whitehead was requested to append to his report on the replies of the representative agriculturists, selected by him to give their experience in the past season, a series of more general notes on the points above indicated. He has also materially increased the usefulness of the report by the coloured illustrations supplied, exhibiting the various phases of the fungoid attacks now the subject of examination. It is to be regretted that out of 144 agriculturists addressed by the Board in June last, with a request for co-operation by supplying the details of their experience, only thirty-seven have found themselves in a position to furnish precise replies - founded on their own observations - to the schedule of questions issued. The reports received, however, embrace the experience of gentlemen residing in as many as twenty-six different counties. In all but seven of these counties more or less disastrous attacks of rust were experienced in 1892. Few indications of novel explanations of the phenomena in question have been supplied by the reporters, although the connection between extensive attacks of mildew and sudden atmospheric changes and untimely frosts has again, as in all earlier inquiries, formed a prominent subject of comment. Book excerpt: "This beautifully illustrated book reviews scientific and technological information about the world's major food plants and their culinary uses. An introductory chapter discusses nutritional and other fundamental scientific aspects of plant foods. The 100 main chapters deal with a particular species or group of species. All categories of food plants are covered, including cereals, oilseeds, fruits, nuts, vegetables, legumes, herbs, spices, beverage plants and sources of industrial food extracts. Information is provided on scientific and common names, appearance, history, economic and social importance, food uses (including practical information on storage and preparation), as well as notable curiosities. There are more than 3000 literature citations in the book and the text is complemented by over 250 exquisitely drawn illustrations. Given the current, alarming rise in food costs and increasing risk of hunger in many regions, specialists in diverse fields will find this reference work to be especially useful. Book Return to Resistance

Book excerpt: In the tradition of Silent Spring, Raoul Robinson's Return to Resistance calls for a revolution. Traditional plant breeding techniques have led us to depend more and more on chemical pesticides to protect ourcrops. Return to Resistance shows gardeners, farmers, and plant breeders how to use a long-neglected technique to create hardy new plant varieties that are naturally resistant to pests and disease. Horizontal resistance breeding has been largely ignored in this century due to the popularity and apparent successes of the Mendelian geneticists. However the colossal, unrecognized failure of m.

Book Durability of Disease Resistance

Download or read book Durability of Disease Resistance written by Th. Jacobs and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-02 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From February 24 -28, 1992 an international symposium on Durability of Disease Resistance was held at the International Agricultural Centre in Wageningen, the Netherlands. The symposium, organized by the Department of Plant Breeding of Wageningen Agricultural University and the Centre for Plant Breeding and Repro duction Research, CPRO-DLO, was part of the DGIS funded programme Durable Resistance in Developing Countries. Without any form of prevention or protection nearly all crops will be seriously or even severely damaged by a range of pathogens. In modern agriculture man has been able to control many if not most pathogens using i) pesticides, ii) phyto sanitary methods such as control of seed and plant material in order to start a crop disease free, iii) agronomic measures such as crop rotation, iv) disease resis tance or combinations of these measures. Over the years the use of pesticides has increased enormously and so did the pro blems associated with pesticide use, such as environmental pollution and building of resistance and tolerance to these pesticides in the pathogens. The use of resis tance too increased strongly over the years and here too problems arose.

Book Electron Microscopy of Plant Pathogens

Download or read book Electron Microscopy of Plant Pathogens written by Kurt Mendgen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plants, fungi, and viruses were among the first biological objects studied with an electron microscope. One of the two first instruments built by Siemens was used by Helmut Ruska, a brother of Ernst Ruska, the pioneer in constructing electron microscopes. H. Ruska published numerous papers on different biological objects in 1939. In one of these, the pictures by G. A. Kausche, E. Pfankuch, and H. Ruska of tobacco mosaic virus opened a new age in microscopy. The main problem was then as it still is today, to obtain an appropriate preparation of the specimen for observation in the electron microscope. Beam damage and specimen thickness were the first obstacles to be met. L. Marton in Brussels not only built his own instrument, but also made considerable progress in specimen preparation by introducing the impregnation of samples with heavy metals to obtain useful contrast. His pictures of the bird nest orchid root impregnated with osmium were revolutionary when published in 1934. It is not the place here to recall the different techniques which were developed in the subsequent years to attain the modern knowledge on the fine structure of plant cells and of different plant pathogens. The tremendous progress obtained with tobacco mosaic virus is reflected in the chapter by M. Wurtz on the fine structure of viruses in this Volume. New cytochemical and immunological techniques considerably surpass the morphological information obtained from the pathogens, especially at the host-parasite interface.
