Book The Death of Truth

Download or read book The Death of Truth written by Michiko Kakutani and published by Crown. This book was released on 2019-08-13 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the Pulitzer Prize–winning critic comes an impassioned critique of America’s retreat from reason We live in a time when the very idea of objective truth is mocked and discounted by the occupants of the White House. Discredited conspiracy theories and ideologies have resurfaced, proven science is once more up for debate, and Russian propaganda floods our screens. The wisdom of the crowd has usurped research and expertise, and we are each left clinging to the beliefs that best confirm our biases. How did truth become an endangered species in contemporary America? This decline began decades ago, and in The Death of Truth, former New York Times critic Michiko Kakutani takes a penetrating look at the cultural forces that contributed to this gathering storm. In social media and literature, television, academia, and politics, Kakutani identifies the trends—originating on both the right and the left—that have combined to elevate subjectivity over factuality, science, and common values. And she returns us to the words of the great critics of authoritarianism, writers like George Orwell and Hannah Arendt, whose work is newly and eerily relevant. With remarkable erudition and insight, Kakutani offers a provocative diagnosis of our current condition and points toward a new path for our truth-challenged times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Has something indeed happened to evangelical theology and to evangelical churches? According to David Wells, the evidence indicates that evangelical pastors have abandoned their traditional role as ministers of the Word to become therapists and "managers of the small enterprises we call churches." Along with their parishioners, they have abandoned genuine Christianity and biblical truth in favor of the sort of inner-directed experiential religion that now pervades Western society. Specifically, Wells explores the wholesale disappearance of theology in the church, the academy, and modern culture. Western culture as a whole, argues Wells, has been transformed by modernity, and the church has simply gone with the flow. The new environment in which we live, with its huge cities, triumphant capitalism, invasive technology, and pervasive amusements, has vanquished and homogenized the entire world. While the modern world has produced astonishing abundance, it has also taken a toll on the human spirit, emptying it of enduring meaning and morality. Seeking respite from the acids of modernity, people today have increasingly turned to religions and therapies centered on the self. And, whether consciously or not, evangelicals have taken the same path, refashioning their faith into a religion of the self. They have been coopted by modernity, have sold their soul for a mess of pottage. According to Wells, they have lost the truth that God stands outside all human experience, that he still summons sinners to repentance and belief regardless of their self-image, and that he calls his church to stand fast in his truth against the blandishments of a godless world. The first of three volumes meant to encourage renewal in evangelical theology (the other two to be written by Cornelius Plantinga Jr. and Mark Noll), No Place for Truth is a contemporary jeremiad, a clarion call to all evangelicals to note well what a pass they have come to in capitulating to modernity, what a risk they are running by abandoning historic orthodoxy. It is provocative reading for scholars, ministers, seminary students, and all theologically concerned individuals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orthodoxy stands for truth in faith. Objective, absolute truth in today's secular society is nonexistent. Post modernism has taught the world that truth is relative. Once God is dethroned, the individual manufactures and propagates one's own truth. This book examines the moral relativism of our age with the multitude of clashing truths. It then goes on to draw upon countless resources beginning with the Scriptures, the Church Fathers, and several intellectuals to show that Truth, with a capital T, does exist and is found in its fullness in Him who said, "I am the Truth."

Book Revelation Truth Volume One

Download or read book Revelation Truth Volume One written by Rev. Daniel W. Blair and published by Rev. Daniel W. Blair. This book was released on 2015-04-14 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the world races toward the Great Tribulation, immorality among the world's leaders, increased lawlessness, natural disasters, and anarchy many voices have flooded the blogosphere, YouTube and the social networks to interpret the times. Rev. Blair has risen above the unholy chorus to write a series of timeless articles from a biblical perspective to help Christians stand firm in their faith. This collection of short articles taken from his two popular websites give practical application, prophetic insight, and a clear voice to those in power. As prophet, social activist, and pastor, Daniel Blair writes each article with compassion and uncompromising biblical truth to prod every Christian to pick up the banner of truth and walk in holiness before the Lord. Use as a daily devotional or as a timeless resource during the coming distress. In this volume I discuss the need for a genuine Christian life as we face a decline in the church and an apostate faith by many who claim to be Christian. These articles were written to help Christians stand firm by returning to the Bible as their sole authority, which is sufficient for all of life and godliness.

Book Search For Truth The seeker begins

Download or read book Search For Truth The seeker begins written by BRYAN RADZIN and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-08-18 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I don't have so much tricks up my sleeve, as much as journalistic fundamentals to take down powerful and influential people that think they're completely above the law and won't ever get caught. I want to show them that we're watching and they will be held accountable. So if a politician is only in it for the money, and say they want illegals to leave, is there a possibility they don't want them to leave? Is there a chance they really want them here because immigrant labor is cheaper than American? Are politicians making money hand over fist because the companies that employ immigrants make truckloads of it themselves and therefore contribute more to campaigns? The vigilante types are probably linked to the corrupt politicians, who both stand to lose equally if immigrants were made legal. The politicians would lose the status quo of cheap labor they can take advantage of, and the vigilantes would have to deal with a multi-racial society; which is all meant to benefit the status quo.

Book excerpt: SEVEN OUTRAGEOUS TRUTHS YOU CAN STILL BELIEVE . . . AND WHY ·“Every other religion is wrong.” ·“God sends good people to Hell.” ·“Homosexuality is a perversion.” ·“Evolution is a myth.” ·“God is ultimately responsible for suffering in the world.” ·“Husbands are to lead their families.” ·“America is a Christian nation.” In Hell? Yes! Dr. Robert Jeffress issues a bold wakeup call to all believers–from college students to grandparents–to stop apologizing for and start proclaiming the tough but essential truths that Christians have historically embraced. And he provides the finest biblical, scientific, and historical evidence needed to defend these core beliefs in a culture turned hostile to God's truth. Dr. Jeffress believes the secular spirit of political correctness is holding the church hostage. And the tragic result is that the revolutionary, life-changing, positive message of the Christian faith is being watered down. If you are weary of a Christianity that waffles and wavers about controversial issues–if you are ready to stand up and compassionately yet forcefully and intelligently say, “This is what I believe and here’s why”–then this book is for you!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Etherius is the angel that has been guarding the gates to the entrance of Eden for an eternity. Having lost all sense of himself within this eternal realm, he sets forth to discover the meaning of the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil alongside his once best and long forgotten friend, Lucifer, and Empyria, a lost love shrouded in the mystery of his heart. Traveling between Heaven, Hell, and Earth, Etherius uncovers the meaning of good and evil and its relation to humanity, while being led to his own truth within the universe inside and outside of his mind. The goal of the mystical path is transformation. What this transformation is differs from one religion or tradition to another, but to change, to realize the self, to transcend the self, to achieve union of the personal self with the universal self, to experience eternity, the divine, God, are many of the purposes and goals of all mystical experience. As varied as the goal of mysticism is, so too the path to genuine experience. This book is one such path.

Book Whatever Happened to the Human Race

Download or read book Whatever Happened to the Human Race written by Francis A. Schaeffer and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2021-08-16 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why Should Christians Care About the Dignity of Human Life? What determines whether a life has value? Does age, ability, or health? Scripture tells us that we are all created in the image and likeness of God, and Christians are called to defend the dignity of his creation. But as debates rage around issues from abortion to euthanasia, it can be difficult to speak up against opposing viewpoints. In Whatever Happened to the Human Race?, renowned theologian Francis A. Schaeffer and former US surgeon general C. Everett Koop, MD argue that society's view of life quickly deteriorates when we devalue God's creation through "anti-life" and "anti-God" practices. First written forty years ago, their perspectives are still relevant today as secular humanist issues, including euthanasia and infanticide, increasingly take hold in our culture. Their medical, historical, and theological insights empower readers to affirm a pro-life worldview and defend it confidently.

Book Truth

  • ISBN : 1250098513
  • Pages : 402 pages

Download or read book Truth written by Mary Mapes and published by St. Martin's Griffin. This book was released on 2015-10-13 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Mapes's Truth (previously published as Truth & Duty) was made into the 2015 film Truth, starring Cate Blanchett, Robert Redford, Topher Grace and Elizabeth Moss. A riveting play-by-play of a reporter getting and defending a story that recalls All the President's Men, Truth puts readers in the center of the "60 Minutes II" story on George W. Bush's shirking of his National Guard duty. The firestorm that followed that broadcast--a conflagration that was carefully sparked by the right and fanned by bloggers--trashed Mapes' well-respected twenty-five year producing career, caused newsman Dan Rather to resign from his anchor chair early and led to an unprecedented "internal inquiry" into the story...chaired by former Reagan attorney general Richard Thornburgh. Truth examines Bush's political roots as governor of Texas, delves into what is known about his National Guard duty-or lack of service-and sheds light on the solidity of the documents that backed up the National Guard story, even including images of the actual documents in an appendix to the book. It is peopled with a colorful cast of characters-from Karl Rove to Sumner Redstone-and moves from small-town Texas to Black Rock-CBS corporate headquarters-in New York City. Truth connects the dots between a corporation under fire from the federal government and the decision about what kinds of stories a news network may cover. It draws a line from reporting in the trenches to the gutting of the great American tradition of a independent media and asks whether it's possible to break important stories on a powerful sitting president.
