Book excerpt: " There have been a number of unsolved disappearances of children in South African history. In this second novel, Gail Schimmel posits that none is more mysterious than the fictional disappearance of the Cowley Twins on 4 June 1978. On this day, 32-year-old Tertia Cowley took her two-and-a-half-month old twins with her to a doctor's appointment in Rosebank Medicentre, leaving her 5-year-old son, Tim, in the care of his grandmother. Cowley had arranged that her husband would pick the twins up from the doctor's rooms en route home. When the doctor called Cowley in for her appointment, her husband had not yet arrived, so she left the twins under the care of the receptionist. She explained that her husband would arrive to fetch them. About ten minutes later, according to the receptionist, a well-dressed, middle-aged white man arrived in the reception area. He said that he was Mrs Cowley's husband, and that he would take the twins with him. The receptionist handed the twins to him, and when Mrs Cowley emerged from the doctor's room, she passed on the message that the twins were with their father, and that he would be taking them to visit his mother before meeting Mrs Cowley at home. A few hours later, the truth emerged : Alan Cowley arrived home from work, and apologised that he had been unable to fetch the twins. It was then that the Cowleys came to the horrible realisation : an impostor had abducted their daughters. They immediately called the police, but it was too late. Despite extensive investigations, no trace of the Cowley Twins has ever been found. But what happened to the blue-eyed, blonde girls, Isabella and Melissa ? ..." -- Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our most powerful female writer of fiction has emphatically taught, if a striking story can teach, that there is no sort of wrong deed of which a man can bear the punishment alone; you can’t isolate yourself, and say that the evil which is in you shall not spread. Men’s lives are as thoroughly blended with each other as the air they breathe; evil spreads as necessarily as disease. “I know, I feel the terrible extent of suffering this sin of Arthur’s has caused to others,” — so the good rector tells one who cherishes vengeance on the wrong-doer; “but so does every sin cause suffering to others besides those who commit it.” The problem how far a man is to be held responsible for the unforeseen consequences of his own deed this speaker pronounces to be one that might well make us tremble to look into it; the evil consequences that may lie folded in a single act of selfish indulgence being a thought so awful that it ought surely to awaken some feeling less presumptuous than a rash and vindictive desire to punish...FROM THE BOOK.

Book William Faulkner Letters Fictions

Download or read book William Faulkner Letters Fictions written by James G. Watson and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-09-10 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Besides the groundbreaking novels and stories that brought him fame, William Faulkner throughout his life wrote letters—to his publisher, his lovers, his family, and his friends. In this first major study of epistolarity in Faulkner's work, James G. Watson examines Faulkner's personal correspondence as a unique second canon of writing, separate from his literary canon with its many fictional letters but developing along parallel lines. By describing the similarity of forms and conventions in Faulkner's personal and fictional correspondence, Watson clearly demonstrates that Faulkner's personal experience as a writer of letters significantly shaped his imaginative work early and late. Letters are always about themselves; they re-create a world between the sender and the receiver. In this illuminating study, Faulkner's personal letters are treated as a form of reflexive writing: first-person narratives in which Sender self-consciously portrays Self to a specific Receiver, likewise portrayed in the letter-text. This duality of actual experience and imaginative re-creation measures the personal distances between the life of the writer and the written self-image. It reveals that letters are at once fragments of autobiography and fictions of self. Such "laws of letters" apply equally to the letters that appear throughout Faulkner's novels and stories. The twenty-one letters and telegrams in The Sound and the Fury, for example, portray character, propel plot, and convey important themes of failed communication and broken identity. From Soldiers' Pay to his last work, Faulkner's carefully lettered canon of fiction is dramatic evidence of his understanding of epistolarity and of the extent to which he adapted letters, including some of his own, to shape his fictional world.

Book excerpt: It's Jordi Gordan's 55th birthday and she receives, as she has for every birthday for the last fifteen years, a message from Nico. While her husband, Hal, cooks her a birthday breakfast, she cries over her message from Nico - because Jordi is a woman with a secret. During the course of the day, the reader follows Jordi around: to the traditional family breakfast and the handing out of gifts, then to a visit with her (now French-speaking and senile) elderly mother, to Thrupps for some groceries, to lunch with her best friend, the irrepressible Sally, and then home where she makes the final preparations for a business dinner party that evening (an unfortunate miscalculation of dates that has robbed her of a special night with Hal). As she goes about her preparations, we meet Jordi's friends and family - and we get to see how her life is carefully constructed to screen all of them from her secret. Slowly, Jordi begins to tell us about Nico - how she first met him and where, how they knew as soon as they met that there was something between them and how neither of them could act on it because of their marriages. For almost thirty years, she and Nico have been sidestepping each other - in London, in New York, even in Jo'burg. And at every turn we see how Jordi and Nico's lives are kept apart by Jordi's strong belief in the importance of her marriage vows. Even when she weakens and begins to indulge her fantasy of running away to be with Nico, there is always something to hold her back. As evening approaches, she puts Nico to the back of her mind and readies herself for her guests. The dinner party is a success and the atmosphere is laid back and casual. Then, while she is taking a break from the table, Jordi overhears two of her guests talking about her. Back at the table she confronts the women in an amiable kind of a way, but it becomes clear that something is not quite right. The conversation grinds to a halt before Moira, Jordi's poisonous sister-in-law, blurts out a shocking truth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nobody's Home is a bold view of the American novel from its beginnings to the contemporary scene. Focusing on some of the deepest instincts of American life and culture--individual liberty, freedom of speech, constructing a life--Arnold Weinstein brilliantly sketches the remarkable career of the American self in some of the major works of the past one hundred fifty years. Weinstein contends that American writers are haunted by the twin specters of the self as a mirage, as Nobody, and by the brutal forces of culture and ideology that deny selfhood to people on the basis of money, sex, and color of skin. His central thesis is that language makes possible freedoms and accomplishments that are achievable in no other realm, and that American fiction is a fascinating record of the human fight against coercion, of the kinds of maneuvering room that we may find in life and in art. This study is unique in several respects: it offers some of the keenest readings of major American texts that have ever been written, including some of the most significant works of the past decades, and it fashions a rich and supple view of the American novel as a writerly form of freedom, in sharp contrast to today's critical emphasis on blindness and co-option.
