Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children Behaving Badly? Violence between children is a controversial and frequently misunderstood issue, one that has seen media-fuelled moral panic come to dominate public perceptions and debate. Children Behaving Badly? presents a powerful challenge to commonly held beliefs about peer violence and portrays it as an important child welfare concern. By gathering together the most updated international research and expert commentary on peer violence issues from across the childhood spectrum, this volume directly addresses the complexity of this troubling issue from a range of multidisciplinary disciplines and perspectives. Contributions throughout the text reveal how childhood is not a homogenous experience but fragmented by gender, ethnicity, sexuality and poverty, which are each addressed within specific chapters. Other issues explored include pre-school children and peer violence, bullying, youth gangs, knife crime, teenage partner violence, sibling abuse, homophobia, international media depictions of violent youth, and implications for professionals working with children and young people. Throughout the text, new and original research insights are presented with the goal of providing the reader with a greater understanding of the safeguarding of children and young people from this form of violence. Children Behaving Badly? is essential reading for policy makers, researchers, students, and practitioners from a wide range of child welfare disciplines about a highly topical and complex social problem.

Book From Trauma to Harming Others

Download or read book From Trauma to Harming Others written by Ariel Nathanson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-08-01 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Trauma to Harming Others shows the approach of professionals from the world-renowned Portman Clinic, which specializes in work with violence, delinquency and sexual acting out. This book focuses on the intricacies of working with young people who display such worrying behaviours. Written by experienced and eminent authors, the chapters unpack central theories and open up original ideas describing a range of work with sexual offenders, compulsive pornography users and violent young people. The central theme of the book is trauma and how acting out can be understood as a way of managing the psychic pain of such trauma. The chapters are ingrained with understandings from the classical psychoanalytic traditions of the Portman and Tavistock Clinics, together with more recent thinking about trauma, rooted in neurobiological, developmentally and trauma informed theories. They emphasize the need for awareness of both the victim of trauma and the perpetrator within the same person presenting for help, while panning treatment. With insights and examples from experienced clinicians, this book will be of value to all those working with traumatized, acting out young people.

Book A Treatment Manual for Adolescents Displaying Harmful Sexual Behaviour

Download or read book A Treatment Manual for Adolescents Displaying Harmful Sexual Behaviour written by Eamon McCrory and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Treatment Manual for Adolescents Displaying Harmful Sexual Behaviour is a resource for clinicians working therapeutically with male adolescents who have shown harmful sexual behaviour (HSB). Comprised of a printed manual and with accompanying online downloadable material, it is designed to be delivered over 30 sessions across 4 modules, but can be adapted to suit the needs of individual adolescents. The four modules address a range of clinical tasks, including: establishing rapport and a therapeutic alliance with the young person; developing the relationship skills of the young person and addressing their harmful sexual behaviour; the young person's feelings, thoughts and beliefs and developing their capacity to regulate emotions and sexual arousal; and issues of sexuality, dating, endings and relapse prevention. The printed manual outlines the background that any clinician delivering treatment needs to consider, including a description of key therapeutic techniques, practical advice on how to prepare for and deliver an intervention, overviews of the modules and sessions, and sample session plans. Each session plan is clearly written in a step-by-step format and is stored electronically online so they can be easily printed as often as required. The accompanying online downloadable material also contains 'Home Project' sheets (homework tasks to consolidate the in-session therapeutic work) as well as a specially commissioned 'Character Library' with cut-out figures and background scenes that can be used as tools for the young person to explore real and fictional scenarios. This professional resource aims to provide the clinician with the tools to address adolescent harmful sexual behaviour within a broader social and emotional developmental context, and will aid those working with young people to motivate them to engage in a positive process of change.

Book Children and Young People Whose Behaviour is Sexually Concerning or Harmful

Download or read book Children and Young People Whose Behaviour is Sexually Concerning or Harmful written by Jackie Bateman and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2014-12-21 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than any other challenging behaviour, the sexual abuse of one child by another generates anxiety, puzzlement and confusion. Adults confident in dealing with a defiant or delinquent child find their confidence leaves them when confronted with sexual misbehaviour in a child who they expect to be asexual. In this book, Jackie Bateman and Judith Milner provide an accessible overview of the evidence relating to such problem behaviours, from inappropriate behaviour to sexual abuse. They go on to propose research-based effective and creative methods that professionals can use to develop responsibility-taking and safety in the child, and outline a strengths-based model for practice. Using the model, the authors show how behaviour can be managed through the development of safe care plans for the home and/or school - addressing communication, supervision, and supportive networks. They also provide guidance for working across a range of settings - whether directly with families, in schools or with children with learning difficulties. This practical guide will be an essential tool for social workers, counsellors, teachers, nurses and any professional with responsibility for child protection.

This new edition has been extended substantially to include recent practice, policy and theoretical developments, such as understanding the lived experience of children, young people, and family members. It also considers children's neurological development, assessing parental capacity to change, early help assessments, emerging areas of practice such as child sexual exploitation, and working with asylum-seeking and trafficked children. Crucially, this updated edition takes a broader approach in offering relevant information to a range of professionals working with vulnerable children. The importance of inter-professional working is emphasised throughout.

Book Working with Vulnerable Children Young People and Families

Download or read book Working with Vulnerable Children Young People and Families written by Graham Brotherton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-11 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully revised and expanded edition considers the meaning of 'vulnerability' – a key concept in early intervention – and the relationship between vulnerability and the individual, communities and society. It includes new chapters on children’s voices, young people and vulnerability, and working with vulnerable parents. Introducing students to a broad debate around what constitutes vulnerability and related concepts such as risk and resilience, it examines how vulnerability has been conceptualised by policy makers with a clear focus on early intervention for preventing social problems later in life. It adopts a case study approach, using chapters examining the concept of vulnerability from sociological, psychological and social policy perspectives before looking at examples around leaving care, victims of violence, sexual abuse, and the Internet. Supporting students in engaging with and evaluating the conceptualisation and application of vulnerability in professional practice, this book is suitable for anyone either preparing for or currently working within the children’s workforce, from social work and health care to education and youth work.
