Book Transpacific Americas

Download or read book Transpacific Americas written by Eveline Dürr and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-07 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores cultural, social and economic connections between the Americas and the South Pacific. It reaches beyond Sino-American collaborations to focus on rather neglected, and sometimes invisible, Southern linkages, asking how these connections originated and have developed over time, which local responses they have generated, and what impact these processes have in the region in terms of representational forms and strategies, new cultural practices, and empowerment of individuals in (post)colonial contexts. The volume also compares and contrasts intriguing parallels of politics and identity formation. By extending the focus beyond East Asia to the Southern Pacific region, including Island connections with the Americas, the volume provides a more comprehensive understanding of recent dynamics and shifting relations across the Pacific. By approaching the Transpacific Americas as an assemblage or relational space, which is created and becomes meaningful through multiple localities and their translocal connections, the book complicates the Euro-American distinction between "centre" and "rim". While the collection offers a distinctive geographical focus, it simultaneously emphasizes the translocal qualities of specific locations through their entanglements in transpacific assemblages within and across cultural, social and economic spheres. Furthermore, without neglecting the inextricable, historical dimension of anthropological perspectives, the focus is on the diverse and unexpected contemporary forms of cultural, social and economic encounters and engagements, and on (re)emerging Indigenous networks. Primarily based on empirical research, the volume explores face-to-face encounters, relations "from below," and transcultural interactions and relationships in, as well as ideas and conceptualizations of, cultural spaces across localities that have long been perceived as separate, but are indeed closely interconnected.

Book excerpt: This book presents research by African American, Latino/a/x, and Alaskan Indian/Native American (AI/AN) communication scholars. It highlights the importance of communication and the recognition of the unique experiences that impact how health information and health care are understood through diverse racial and cultural perspectives. Each chapter advances various divergent health issues and disparities pertinent to Black, Latino/a/x, and AI/AN communities, so that the powerful aspect of the human condition to know and be known as it relates to the negotiation of health and communication can be clearly understood. Contributions to this volume unabashedly call for more equitable, community-centric, tribally-centered, and transparent scholarship on topics of health disparities, health care, marginality, medical mistrust, social justice, and media and new technology as it relates to people of color. The authors in this book are committed to research areas that invigorate and reimagine conversations among clinicians, public health professionals, classroom environments, and communities. This insightful volume seeks to shift the dominant culture paradigms and locate authors of color and their research experiences and scholarship as central to their work. The book was originally published as a special issue of Health Communication.

  • Pages : 708 pages

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This tightly edited volume contains the finest, highly accessible articles in the fast-growing legal genre of critical race theory--a field which is changing the way this nation looks at race, challenging orthodoxy, questioning the premises of liberalism, and debating sacred wisdoms. Including treatments of two new, exciting topics--Critical Race Feminism and Critical White Studies--this volume is truly on "the cutting edge." Questions for discussion and reading suggestions after each part make this volume essential for those interested in law, the multiculturalism movement, political science, and critical thought. In this wide-ranging second edition, Richard Delgado and Jean Stefancic bring together the finest, most illustrative, and highly accessible articles in the fast-growing legal genre of Critical Race Theory. In challenging orthodoxy, questioning the premises of liberalism, and debating sacred wisdoms, Critical Race Theory scholars writing over the past few years have indelibly changed the way America looks at race. This edition contains treatment of all the topics covered in the first edition, along with provocative and probing questions for discussion and detailed suggestions for additional reading, all of which set this fine volume apart from the field. In addition, this edition contains five new substantive units--crime, critical race practice, intergroup tensions and alliances, gay/lesbian issues, and transcending the black-white binary paradigm of race. In each of these areas, groundbreaking scholarship by the movement's founding figures as well as the brightest new stars provides immediate entry to current trends and developments in critical civil rights thought. Author note: Richard Delgado, Jean Lindsley Professor of Law at the University of Colorado at Boulder, is one of the founding members of the Conference on Critical Race Theory. Winner of the Association of American Law Schools' 1995 Clyde Ferguson Award for outstanding law professor of color, he is the author of over 100 articles in the law review literature on civil rights and of several books, including Failed Revolutions, Words that Wound, and The Rodrigo Chronicles. Jean Stefancic, Research Associate in Law at the University of Colorado, is the author of leading articles and books on Critical Race Theory, Latino/a scholarship, and social change, including No Mercy: How Conservative Think Tanks and Foundations Changed America's Social Agenda (Temple).
