Book excerpt: What the Locusts Have Eaten references the second chapter of Joel where God is calling the Israelites to repentance. Their land has been destroyed as a result of their sin and rebellion. God calls for them to repent, turn from their ways, and seek Him. He promises to restore what the locusts have eaten. This book begins by asking the question how does a couple that is in love and desirous of a lifetime together on their wedding day get transformed into a couple that despises each other and gets a divorce just a short time later? How do we go from one extreme to the other? The author contends that there are three things that we need to embrace for restoration in our relationships and joy in our lives. It starts with an understanding of what a covenant relationship is and isn't. A covenant is an unbreakable promise that is itself the basis of the relationship. The second key is looking for God to fill our needs and not position, power, money, things, or someone else. This takes away the frustration of unfulfilled expectations from others, especially that of the spouse. And finally, the action that helps make this possible is forgiveness. Starting with our earliest memories of where we were hurt, mistreated, or offended and offer forgiveness to others as we have been forgiven by our heavenly Father. Understanding that what someone else owes us pales in comparison to the debt we owe. Through this, God can restore relationships and take what was destroyed and make it better than it was before.

But there’s another story unfolding too—if you know where to look. In Gospelbound, Collin Hansen and Sarah Eekhoff Zylstra counter these growing fears with a robust message of resolute hope for anyone hungry for good news. Join them in exploring profound stories of Christians who are quietly changing the world in the name of Jesus—from the wild world of digital media to the stories of ancient saints and unsung contemporary activists on the frontiers of justice and mercy. Book The Millennial Narrative

Download or read book The Millennial Narrative written by Jaco J. Hamman and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A good education will land you a good job,” “Be an entrepreneur/Start something in a garage or dorm room” and even “Jesus saves” are narratives that collapsed for the millennial generation (born 1982-2002). These narratives, amongst many similar social and religious ones, have lost their meaning and power as millennials question all authorities and struggle to flourish in a world come of age. With their needs for community and success, a strong spirituality, and believing that their gifts should be recognized and can make a difference, millennials increasingly find meaning and purpose outside the church. As they face economic uncertainty, reduced career prospects, unceasing change, as well as civic, global, and ecological uncertainties, however, a large number of millennials are overwhelmed with feelings of anxiety and depression. Caught between hope and fear, millennials leave the church with their values of personal transformation, purpose, community, spirituality, social transformation and ecological awareness. Ironically the church often holds the same values. The Millenial Narrative is written for pastoral leaders who want to welcome millennials, both inside and outside their congregation. The book draws on the wisdom of the prophetic Book of Joel as a narrative worth living into. Drawing on Joel’s three chapters, The Millenial Narrative empowers pastoral leaders to: • Facilitate the work of mourning Millennials are facing; • Envision a spiritual community that can welcome millennials; • Introduce a compassionate God that restores and indwells as the Spirit; • Reflect on God’s judgment through the lens of accountability; and, • Support and encourage millennials to be a blessing to others. In addition, pastoral leaders will receive a sermon outline and material for adult education.

Book Purity s Big Payoff Premarital Sex Is a Big Rip Off

Download or read book Purity s Big Payoff Premarital Sex Is a Big Rip Off written by Donna Lee Schillinger and published by The Quilldriver. This book was released on 2011-05 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner! 2012 Christian Small Publisher's Book of the Year in young adult (12-18) category. Add this book to your arsenal in the battle to remain pure! The most difficult task in the life of a Christian single today is maintaining purity until marriage. The payoff is perfect love and sex, just as our Creator intended. But if that’s so awesome, why aren’t more people choosing it? And how can premarital sex be so bad if so many people are doing it and loving it? People who were virgins when they married aren’t usually the type to kiss and tell. And when premarital sex goes wrong, no one wants to Tweet it. This awkward silence from both contingents isn’t helping the next generation to decide well on the issue of premarital sex. Purity’s Big Payoff/Premarital Sex is a Big Rip-off is a collection of 17 first-person narratives about successfully waiting for marriage to have sex – or not. Contributors on both sides of the issue candidly share in face-reddening detail what they learned on their way to the wedding bed. Young people aiming to remain pure will be encouraged and learn practical strategies for resisting sexual temptation. Those who wish they had waited will learn that it’s never too late to restore purity with God’s grace. (This book is two-faced. One side is dedicated to purity, then turned over and flipped upside down, the other side is dedicated to premarital sex. Thus the last page of the purity book is immediately followed by the last page of the premarital sex book, but upside down, and vice versa. Got it?)
