Its the height of the dangerous fire season and a raging wildfire, believed to have been set by an arsonist, has rained ashes on the city for five days, causing massive evacuations. Three years earlier, in nearby Diablo Gorge, three fire-fighters died when they were encircled by a raging wildfire and the calcified bones of two others were found in the ashes, their deaths the result of an apparent unsolved arson-homicide. Now an arsonist, who calls himself Moonlighter, is backwriting poems about his feats of fire on internet chat rooms frequented by pyromaniacs. When neither the state fire authorities nor the FBI are willing to join forces to catch the serial arsonist, DeSilva forms his own team that includes his former partner, detective Fisher Wells, psychologist (and currant main-squeeze), Pauline Graham, and Sunny Szabo, a recovering meth addict suffering from agoraphobia. As the Santa Ana windsthe devils breathblow hot out of the mountains, the sociopathic arsonist spins out of control, in this taut police procedural, the third in the Eddie DeSilva mystery series.

Download or read book Midaris written by Robert Alexandre and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2008-03-31 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was born Oct. 04, 1936 in the small town of Lafayette, Louisiana in the heart of the Cajun Culture. I am of French, Spanish and Native American Heritage. At seventeen years of age I began to travel the world while aboard ship in the US Navy at the end of the Korean War. I spent my enlistment time aboard the USS Cape Esperance for three years and one year on shore duty. During this time I saw many wonderful and also dreadful things that remain in my thoughts to this day. I received an honorable discharge and went to work in the Oil/Gas Industry in 1958. This novel is based on multiple events that impacted my life many years ago. Most of the characters are real, only their names have been changed. All locations, streets, highways and byways are still there and I have traveled them all. Though I am not a published author I feel that I have put pen to paper in a manner that can be enjoyed by the reader. Some of the characters are portrayed as I remember them and others have been brought to life as I see them. Having lived in some of the cities I know the people and their lifestyles, and to portray them in a written sense was challenging, but most enjoyable. Now at the worldly age of seventy one I still remain faithful to my work in the same industry and some of what I saw in all my travels I have written about in Letters to the Editor and were published in The Banner Press. So, now Midaris has come into your life. I hope the avid reader of books will find this a book to enjoy and who knows, maybe it did happen as told. Robert Alexandre

The city is left in a state of chaos after the brutal murder of a priest is followed by the deaths of female tourists. Are these thrill-kills or serial murders? Uncertainty puzzles state police officials, a female homicide detective, and a district attorney. Complexities set in when the detective and the district attorney become lovers. They increase when she comes to suspect him of being part of at least one of the crimes. Meanwhile, a power-seeking separatist is vying for the mayor’s seat. A powerful state senator known to sanction illicit drug deals supports him, and the outcome of the mayoral race could affect the political and cultural make-up of the city. A middle-aged businessman and an elder represent the conscience of the city and a philosophy in general. One does it by his deeds and his opinions, and the other through his experience and by simple wisdom. Through the elder, a brief history of the area is given.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2nd novel of The Hinder Stars series returns to an intergalactic corporate conflict, set in the Hugo Award–winning Alliance-Union Universe. With deft prose and complex characters, Alliance Unbound is thought-provoking science fiction that shrewdly examines the technological and sociopolitical challenges of humanity’s journey to the stars. When Cyteen opened up faster-than-light travel, it gave the technology for free to any ship that could reach it; and with that technology, it provided a map of jump-points, points of mass enabling starships to navigate hyperspace safely. The map of jump-points, however, stopped with the route to Alpha—thus excluding Sol, and Earth, and the Earth Company, whose gateway to the stars was Alpha. Cyteen knew exactly what it was doing with its gift. Sol and the EC could still reach Alpha with sub-light pusher-ships as it always had—but Sol and the Earth Company no longer had any authority in the Beyond. But Sol intends to take back control of its star-stations and stop Cyteen's unbridled expansion, however it can. To do that, they are willing to starve Alpha and concentrate their efforts on a huge FTLer capable of carrying military force.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is based on hundreds of oral histories, conducted in Europe and North America, with survivors who were children in the Holocaust, primary documentation uncovered by the author (including diaries, letters, photographs and family albums), and archival records. Drawing on these sources, Dwork reveals the feeling, daily activities, and perceptions of Jewish children who lived and died in the shadow of Holocaust. She reconstructs and analyzes the many different experiences the children faced. In the early years of Nazi domination they lived at home, increasingly oppressed by rising anti-Semitism. Later some went into hiding while others attempted to live openly on gentile papers. As time passed, more and more were forced into transit camps, ghettos, and death and slave labour camps. Although nearly 90 percent of the Jewish children in Nazi Europe were murdered, we learn in this history not of their deaths but of the circumstances of their lives.
