Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dearth of reliable data on the levels and causes of mortality in poorer regions of the world continues to plague efforts to build a solid evidence base for health policy, planning, monitoring, and evaluation. As a partial solution to this problem, verbal autopsy has become the primary source of information about causes of death in populations lacking vital registration and medical certification. The purpose of this manual is to disseminate new standard data collection and cause-of-death assignment resources for verbal autopsy, and to provide some general guidelines for their use. The manual includes verbal autopsy questionnaires for three age groups, cause-of-death certification and coding guidelines for applying the International statistical classification of diseases and related health problems (ICD-10) to verbal autopsy and a cause-of-death list for verbal autopsy with corresponding ICD-10 codes. These resources are the consensus products of a three-year effort by an expert group led by WHO, consisting of researchers, data users, and other stakeholders under the sponsorship of the Health Metrics Network. They are intended to serve the needs of various users and producers of mortality information, including researchers, policy-makers, program managers, and evaluators.

The use and applications of spoken corpora are discussed from the perspective of both language analysis and language pedagogy. Twelve chapters written by corpus linguists analyse an extensive number of spoken corpora based on the oral production of speakers as varied as language learners, users of English as Lingua Franca, native speakers, or speakers of English in academic contexts. This book also highlights the growing emphasis on the use of corpus-based research by examining the implications of corpus findings in educational settings.

Book Gender Representation in Learning Materials

Download or read book Gender Representation in Learning Materials written by Abolaji S. Mustapha and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representations of gender in learning materials convey an implicit message to students about attitudes towards culturally appropriate gender roles for women and men. This collection takes a linguistic approach to exploring theories about gender representation within the sphere of education and textbooks, and their effects on readers and students within an international context. In the opening section, contributors discuss theories of representation and effect, challenging the conventional Althusserian model of interpellation, and acknowledging the challenges of applying Western feminist models within an international context. Following chapters provide detailed analyses focusing on a number of different countries: Australia, Japan, Brazil, Finland, Russia, Hong Kong, Nigeria, Germany, Qatar, Tanzania, and Poland. Through linguistic analysis of vocabulary associated with women and men, content analysis of what women and men say in textbooks, and discourse analysis of the types of linguistic moves associated with women and men, contributors evaluate the extent to which gendered representations in textbooks perpetuate stereotypical gender roles, what the impact may be on learners, and the ways that both teachers and learners interact and engage with these texts.

Book Feeling It

Download or read book Feeling It written by Mary Bucholtz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feeling It brings together twelve chapters from researchers in Chicanx studies, education, feminist studies, linguistics, and translation studies to offer a cohesive yet broad-ranging exploration of the issue of affect in the language and learning experiences of Latinx youth. Drawing on data from an innovative social justice-oriented university-community partnership based in young people’s social agency and their linguistic and cultural expertise, the contributors are unified by their focus on a single year in the history of this partnership; their analytic focus on race, language, and affect in educational contexts; and their shared commitment to ethnography, discourse analysis, and qualitative methods, informed by participatory and social justice paradigms for research with youth of color. Designed specifically for use in courses, with theoretical framing by the co-editors and ethnographic contributions from leading and emergent scholars, this book is an important and timely resource on affect, race, and social justice in the United States. Thanks to its interdisciplinary grounding, Feeling It will be of interest to future teachers and to researchers and students in applied linguistics, education, and Latinx studies, as well as related fields such as anthropology, communication, social psychology, and sociology.

Many instruments have been developed to measure a myriad of sexuality-related states, traits, behaviors, and outcomes. In Handbook of Sexuality-Related Measures, more than 200 instruments are reproduced, accompanied by the necessary information for their use in research, as well as educational and clinical settings. Measures relating to more than 50 topics are included. Examples are abortion, aging, arousal, general and specific attitudes and behavior, contraception, dysfunctions, education, experience, gender identity, homosexuality, ideology, jealousy, knowledge, masturbation, orgasm, rape, and sexually transmitted diseases. Each chapter describes the development and appropriate use of each instrument, giving information on timing, scoring, and interpretation. Reliability and validity data are, summarized and completely referenced. Nearly all articles include the entire instrument; others provide illustrative content from the instrument and give all necessary information to obtain the instrument.

Book The Bankster Busters Bible

Download or read book The Bankster Busters Bible written by G. Malcolm Doney and published by . This book was released on 2014-05-24 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHAT THIS BOOK IS ABOUT AND WHY IT IS IMPORTANT This is the book the Banksters DO NOT want you to read! G. Malcolm Doney, Author The title of this Book conveys a great deal of what this subject is about. It is the Bankster Busters’ Bible and carries the sub-title How to Fight the Banks and Win, which was the title of the first on-line publication by this author in 2009. So what exactly is a Bankster? Well it sounds a lot like Gangster and the icon on the book’s cover is meant to convey that meaning. This title was bestowed upon the Banking industry during The Great Depression following the 1929 Stock Market Crash and in the opinion of the author no title was more justly deserved. Since those terrible days deliberately orchestrated by Banksters, those interrelated industries that control our entire financial system have become even more skilled at the manipulation of the apparent value of fiat money and real assets to its advantage, all behind a mask of respectability, but to the considerable disadvantage of the American people and the rest of the world’s population. In 1914 the Banking industry pulled its biggest confidence trick ever when it persuaded the American Congress and its then President to create the Federal Reserve – a private bank – and to delegate to the owners and controllers of that private bank the power to create and control the country’s legal tender – the US Dollar. Once that scam was securely established as part of the system and the people got used to it, the powers of the Feds as they became known, were stealthily increased until most citizens in the United States, now mistakenly believe that it is a government department whose function is to control the economy by ironing out the excess highs and lows of natural market forces. The truth is that it actually deliberately creates those excesses in order to subject Americans to the cruelest tax of all time, that of the hidden costs of the manipulation of the Dollar and other world currencies. Examples of how this has worked to the disadvantage of Americans are the many stock market debacles and the manipulation of foreign currencies to force devaluations.
