Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Sculpture to See in Europe Possibly there are no collections of art in Europe where the general tourist needs more careful guiding than in the sculpture galleries. This is due first, to the fragmentary nature of the specimens of antique sculpture, and, second, to the fact that very few of the fragments are originals of the great masters of the past. Then, too, the general tourist in a sculpture gallery gives very little thought to the marred and broken pieces of marble, however rare the workmanship, unless special points of value are brought to the attention or some hint given as to their meaning and purpose. My aim in this book is to arouse an interest in masterpieces even if broken by the despoiler or marred by the restorer. To accomplish this I have given occasionally the historical setting of some pieces and the mythological story of others; such as the special prowess of some great man or the sublime power of a Roman matron; the biblical account of a lawgiver or the tender beauty of singing children. Book Sculpture and the Decorative in Britain and Europe

Download or read book Sculpture and the Decorative in Britain and Europe written by Imogen Hart and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-10-29 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By foregrounding the overlaps between sculpture and the decorative, this volume of essays offers a model for a more integrated form of art history writing. Through distinct case studies, from a seventeenth-century Danish altarpiece to contemporary British ceramics, it brings to centre stage makers, objects, concepts and spaces that have been marginalized by the enforcement of boundaries within art and design discourse. These essays challenge the classed, raced and gendered categories that have structured the histories and languages of art and its making. Sculpture and the Decorative in Britain and Europe is essential reading for anyone interested in the history and practice of sculpture and the decorative arts and the methodologies of art history.

Book Figuration Abstraction

  • Author : Charlotte Benton
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-07-05
  • ISBN : 1351567047
  • Pages : 356 pages

Download or read book Figuration Abstraction written by Charlotte Benton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion that the practice of abstraction was confined to Western Europe while a stereotyped form of figuration defined the art of the Eastern bloc continues to dominate art historical accounts of public sculpture of the post-war period. This book offers a number of alternative readings, and demonstrates strategic uses of figuration and abstraction across East and West. Encompassing sites of memory (including war memorials and Holocaust memorials), state, civic and corporate sculpture, as well as temporary and unexecuted projects, the book shows that persuasive advocates of figuration were to be found in the West, while in the East imaginative experiments in abstraction were proposed in the name of Social Realism. Presenting fresh insights into sculptural practice in the period between 1945 and 1968, this book brings together a wide range of authors, some of whom have never before been published in English. Their essays are complemented by extracts from documentary texts, which give a flavour of contemporary debates, and a biographical section includes entries on many sculptors who will be unfamiliar to an English-speaking audience.

Book Women and the Art and Science of Collecting in Eighteenth Century Europe

Download or read book Women and the Art and Science of Collecting in Eighteenth Century Europe written by Arlene Leis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-31 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through both longer essays and shorter case studies, this book examines the relationship of European women from various countries and backgrounds to collecting, in order to explore the social practices and material and visual cultures of collecting in eighteenth-century Europe. It recovers their lives and examines their interests, their methodologies, and their collections and objects—some of which have rarely been studied before. The book also considers women’s role as producers, that is, creators of objects that were collected. Detailed examination of the artefacts—both visually, and in relation to their historical contexts—exposes new ways of thinking about collecting in relation to the arts and sciences in eighteenth-century Europe. The book is interdisciplinary in its makeup and brings together scholars from a wide range of fields. It will be of interest to those working in art history, material and visual culture, history of collecting, history of science, literary studies, women’s studies, gender studies, and art conservation.
