Book The Sovereign State of Illinois a Short History of a Great State

Download or read book The Sovereign State of Illinois a Short History of a Great State written by James Monaghan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sovereign State of Illinois, a Short History of a Great State: Its Geography, Climate, Resources, and Industries In Illinois the per capita wealth, even in the late thirties, was This amounted to per cent above the national average. Now the state ranks third in per capita income and its taxes per capita are probably the lowest of any major state. The 1949-1950 budget of over a billion dollars is a 12 per cent increase since World War II but the average increase in other states is 22 per cent. Industrially the state ranks third in the nation. Almost every town has its manufacturing plants. East St. Louis, Alton, Peoria, Rockford, Rock Island, Moline and others throb with industry. A million people are carried on factory pay rolls. Nearly two-thirds of the state is underlaid with coal. From great oil domes in central and southern Illinois, over seventy-five million barrels are pumped annually into the nation's mechanical circulation. Smokestacks tower above the fertile plain on almost every horizon. Yet, here and there, in bits of rough land along creeks, playgrounds have been set aside by the state. Artificial lakes attract yachtsmen. Fishermen and hunters find plenty of wild life to test their skill. Small game, partridge and other wild fowl are all bagged by sportsmen. Download or read book Sundown Towns written by James W. Loewen and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Powerful and important . . . an instant classic." —The Washington Post Book World The award-winning look at an ugly aspect of American racism by the bestselling author of Lies My Teacher Told Me, reissued with a new preface by the author In this groundbreaking work, sociologist James W. Loewen, author of the classic bestseller Lies My Teacher Told Me, brings to light decades of hidden racial exclusion in America. In a provocative, sweeping analysis of American residential patterns, Loewen uncovers the thousands of "sundown towns"—almost exclusively white towns where it was an unspoken rule that blacks weren't welcome—that cropped up throughout the twentieth century, most of them located outside of the South. Written with Loewen's trademark honesty and thoroughness, Sundown Towns won the Gustavus Myers Outstanding Book Award, received starred reviews in Publishers Weekly and Booklist, and launched a nationwide online effort to track down and catalog sundown towns across America. In a new preface, Loewen puts this history in the context of current controversies around white supremacy and the Black Lives Matter movement. He revisits sundown towns and finds the number way down, but with notable exceptions in exclusive all-white suburbs such as Kenilworth, Illinois, which as of 2010 had not a single black household. And, although many former sundown towns are now integrated, they often face "second-generation sundown town issues," such as in Ferguson, Missouri, a former sundown town that is now majority black, but with a majority-white police force.

Book The Great Resources and Superior Advantages of the City of Joliet Illinois Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Great Resources and Superior Advantages of the City of Joliet Illinois Classic Reprint written by Hopkins Rowell and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Resources, and Superior Advantages of the City of Joliet, Illinois Joliet is the shire town of Will county, Illinois. It is forty miles southwest of Chicago, and has a population of about ten thousand inhabitants. The Des Plaine River, and Illinois & Michigan Canal pass through the city. The broad plain or valley of the river, with its fall of thirty feet, within the city limits affords a spacious, pleasant and healthy site for a great manufacturing and business city - while the undulating bluffs on either side furnish thousands of charming locations for city residences. Its railroad facilities are not surpassed, except at Chicago, Being parallel with the head of Lake Michigan, it is on the great central air-line route of trade and travel, from ocean to ocean. This advantage can hardly be over-estimated. It is causing an increased yearly divergence of trade from Chicago, over the Joliet Cut-Off route. It also affords us local shipping facilities to Boston and New York as cheap as that city possesses. Few towns can be more healthy or as well supplied with the purest water. The gas works are ample for thirty thousand inhabitants. And there are over thirty miles of finely graded streets. The generous support of eleven flourishing churches; and of schools in like proportion, are evidence of the liberality and public spirit of our citizens. For a fuller exposition of our superior advantages, we refer to the following pages. Does any one ask why we advertise our city? We reply that it is to spread abroad a knowledge of those advantages, and strive to build up here what nature formed us for - a great industrial and manufacturing city. Book Puritan Influences in the Formative Years of Illinois History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Puritan Influences in the Formative Years of Illinois History Classic Reprint written by Carrie Prudence Kofoid and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Puritan Influences in the Formative Years of Illinois History In the north central part of the State of Illinois, a hundred miles above Springfield, lies a little village in the midst of the rich prairie country. The town itself is on a slight rise of land so that it overlooks the country for miles around. On every side stretch the well kept farms. On a bright fall day it is a particularly pleasant scene; everywhere the great fields of corn, golden brown in the sunlight, and moving slowly here and there the huge wagons laden with the golden ears. The expanse of field is broken by orchards, a little woodland where some prairie stream makes its way toward the Illinois river, or a clump of trees or a windmill which indicates the location of some well-kept farm house. There is little going on in the tiny town itself; a few stores, dispersing points for necessary supplies, a large school house with its ebb and flow of noise and silence. The roads are good, the trees abundant and large, the houses neat and comfortable and all pervaded by an air of quiet and repose that calls at once to mind the old New England village off the line of the railroad. Not until 1900 did a railroad reach this village. No mines, no large industries have ever been started in its vicinity. Everything has conspired to keep the community, aside from the slow progress and material improvement that comes with years, in the same social condition with the same ideals and ideas that were stamped on it in the first thirty years of its existence. It is a town typical of many that have arisen in northern Illinois, but owing to its comparative isolation it has preserved longer than many its independence of the bustling activities of the world. Yet this little town and others like it have stood for much in the development of the great State. What has been the central organization, the central force to hold it together and make it count for something both for its own community and the world at large? Where, to borrow a term from silence, has been the dynamic center? All the week the ordinary busy routine of life goes on, each family working to and for itself. When Sunday comes there is a change. From practically every house in the village the people take their way to that modest, ample church, so centrally and conspicuously placed. From away out over the prairie the teams come with whole families. About the church the wagons stand thick; and inside, the large and handsome audience room is well filled. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first statewide history of the Irish in the Prairie State Today over a million people in Illinois claim Irish ancestry and celebrate their love for Ireland. In this concise narrative history, authors Mathieu W. Billings and Sean Farrell bring together both familiar and unheralded stories of the Irish in Illinois, highlighting the critical roles these immigrants and their descendants played in the settlement and the making of the Prairie State. Short biographies and twenty-eight photographs vividly illustrate the significance and diversity of Irish contributions to Illinois. Billings and Farrell remind us of the countless ways Irish men and women have shaped the history and culture of the state. They fought in the French and Indian War, the American Revolution, the Civil War, and two world wars; built the state’s infrastructure and worked in its factories; taught Illinois children and served the poor. Irish political leaders helped to draw up the state’s first constitution, served in city, county, and state offices, and created a machine that dominated twentieth-century politics in Chicago and the state. This lively history adds to our understanding of the history of the Irish in the state over the past two hundred fifty years. Illinoisans and Midwesterners celebrating their connections to Ireland will treasure this rich and important account of the state’s history.
