Book The Stories of Building the Black Beach Community of Ocean City North Carolina

Download or read book The Stories of Building the Black Beach Community of Ocean City North Carolina written by Hope W. Jackson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Stories of Building the Black Beach Community of Ocean City, North Carolina shares a provocative story about a small Black beach community on North Topsail Island, North Carolina. Hope Jackson argues that stories like these not only offer a rich, untold perspective about Black lives, but also shares the depth of this Black community despite originating under the threat of violence in the segregated South. Brick by Brick acknowledges the defiance of a group of Black individuals who, collectively, provided a recreational oceanfront haven. These radical Black folks created a safe harbor for Blacks to visit, live, worship, and recreate in the midst of de facto segregation. The author reveals an embedded narrative which highlights the rebelliousness of Ocean City women’s strategic mothering. Jackson shares how the impact of this location extended beyond a vacation by creating Christian worship opportunities and an Episcopal summer youth camp for Black youth. The Ocean City stories remind readers that despite Jim Crow’s demise, the need for a safe, recreational space remains necessary for Black people in today’s society.

Book The Black Man the Father of Civilization Proven by Biblical History Annotated

Download or read book The Black Man the Father of Civilization Proven by Biblical History Annotated written by James Morris Webb and published by . This book was released on 2020-02-19 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-James Morris Webb was a Christian preacher from the United States who was active around 1910-1930, associated with the African Methodist Episcopal Church. The African Methodist Episcopal Church, also known as "AME Church", is a Christian church founded in 1816. It originated from a group of African Americans from Philadelphia, who separated in 1787 from the Saint George Methodist Episcopal Church, because of racial discrimination and built the African Methodist Church of Bethel. In 1799, Richard Allen became pastor of Bethel and in 1816 he was consecrated as bishop of the newly created African Methodist Episcopal Church. Circumscribed initially in the northern states, the church quickly spread to the south after the civil war. He founded many colleges and seminars, such as Wilberforce University (1856) in Ohio.At the end of the 20th century, the church claimed to have 3,500,000 members and 8,000 congregations. Its headquarters are located in Washington D.C. which is considered the first African-American denomination in the United States. He was one of several pastors of this denomination who stirred for black nationalism and a social and Christian vision that emphasized the role of African Americans in history. In 1919 he published the book The Black Man, the father of civilization, tested by biblical history. He also wrote other pamphlets, and in November 1913 he published an ad in The Chicago Defender with a picture of Jesus as a black man. Webb's intention was to "show love for his race" and "show that the Bible is about blacks."Later, Webb became one of Marcus Garvey's employees in the Black Universal Improvement Association.James Morris Webb, born in 1878 in Tennessee and died in 1940, is an American reverend. He delivered a speech in 1921, predicting that a charismatic leader would be proclaimed king of a great African power and would also be the incarnation of the African God. In 1930, Tafari Makonnen was crowned king of Ethiopia (under the name of Hailé Sélassié I er), so this speech became for some a prophecy that is at the origin of the Rastafari movement.
