Book What Precision Such Restraint

Download or read book What Precision Such Restraint written by Phil Jourdan and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-11 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young man seeking to hack into his own unconscious mind. An academic conference on the metaphysics of flies. An apocalyptic world where punctuation has been outlawed. An eating disorder that produces collectible antiques. A mix of allegory, satire, randomly generated numbers, spam messages rearranged into haiku form, plagiarism, and bad writing presented in the more sophisticated if still unpalatable guise of literary experimentation, Phil Jourdan's collection of stories is infuriating, challenging and other marketing buzzwords. ,

Book excerpt: The United States, Barry R. Posen argues in Restraint, has grown incapable of moderating its ambitions in international politics. Since the collapse of Soviet power, it has pursued a grand strategy that he calls "liberal hegemony," one that Posen sees as unnecessary, counterproductive, costly, and wasteful. Written for policymakers and observers alike, Restraint explains precisely why this grand strategy works poorly and then provides a carefully designed alternative grand strategy and an associated military strategy and force structure. In contrast to the failures and unexpected problems that have stemmed from America’s consistent overreaching, Posen makes an urgent argument for restraint in the future use of U.S. military strength. After setting out the political implications of restraint as a guiding principle, Posen sketches the appropriate military forces and posture that would support such a strategy. He works with a deliberately constrained notion of grand strategy and, even more important, of national security (which he defines as including sovereignty, territorial integrity, power position, and safety). His alternative for military strategy, which Posen calls "command of the commons," focuses on protecting U.S. global access through naval, air, and space power, while freeing the United States from most of the relationships that require the permanent stationing of U.S. forces overseas.

Book Fragmentation in International Human Rights Law

Download or read book Fragmentation in International Human Rights Law written by Marjan Ajevski and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the effects of institutional fragmentation in international human rights law, by comparing the rights jurisprudence of three human rights courts and bodies, namely the European Court for Human Rights, the Inter-American Court for Human Rights and the Human Rights Committee. Contributions cover the areas of freedom of expression (journalism and the media), right to privacy, freedom of assembly and freedom of association (political parties), and measure the extent of fragmentation of human rights protection. Moreover, the volume argues that, while the conflict of laws approach, favoured by the International Law Commission, might work in avoiding outright conflict in obligation, in practice it is not an approach that presents a viable research agenda when it comes to understanding the causes and consequences of institutional fragmentation. This is especially evident in areas like international human rights, where the possibility of a silent drift between the jurisprudence of the three courts is a real possibility. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Nordic Journal of Human Rights.

The First Amendment: Cases and Theory, Fourth Edition is a comprehensive and up to date First Amendment casebook that covers freedom of speech, freedom of association, and religious liberties. The First Amendment: Cases and Theory, Fourth Edition, uses the case method to elucidate theory and doctrine. In an area rife with multi-factor tests, mastery of First Amendment theory and doctrine requires more than rote memorization of three- and four-part tests; it requires a firm foundation in the underlying theories and purposes that animate the Supreme Court’s decisions. No less important, the casebook also includes Theory Applied Problems at the end of each major section. These Theory Applied Problems provide an easy and convenient means to assess students’ mastery of the relevant theories and precedents. The editors also have included carefully targeted coverage of how other constitutional democracies, such as Canada and Germany, have reached very different conclusions regarding the scope and meaning of expressive freedom. All major contemporary free expression and religious liberty controversies receive coverage, with helpful notes to answer student questions and deepen their understanding of the subject areas. The First Amendment: Cases and Theory is a highly teachable casebook suitable for a standard three-hour survey of the First Amendment, but also for more focused courses on the Speech, Press, Assembly Clauses, and the Religion Clauses. Book Introduction to Psychotherapy

Download or read book Introduction to Psychotherapy written by J. A. Hadfield and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1967, the original blurb reads: This book is intended to give the intelligent lay reader a comprehensive view of the subject of psychotherapy, the treatment of nervous disorders by mental means. These disorders are of increasing importance on account of their wide-spread nature and of the misery they produce. It describes the development of psychotherapy as employed by the most primitive peoples and races, through animal magnetism and hypnotism to the more modern analytical schools of Freud, Jung and Adler. It sets out in particular to give the positive contributions of these various systems, although this does not preclude criticism of their weaknesses and more dubious theories. Dr Hadfield has had the widest experience, having treated psychoneurotic disorders for over fifty years, including the war neuroses in the two world wars, both in the Navy and in the Army; and, as Lecturer in the University of London in the subject for over forty years, he has had the opportunity to systematize the knowledge thus obtained. As a result of this experience he has come to conclusions as to the nature, causes and treatment of such disorders differing somewhat from those of the established Schools, and it is these findings which are given in the latter part of the book under the title, ‘Direct Reductive Analysis’. The book will be useful to all those – teachers and parsons as well as medicals – who have to deal with human beings and their aberrations, and to them it is addressed.

Book Talking About Torture

Download or read book Talking About Torture written by Jared Del Rosso and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-09 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the photographs depicting torture at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison were released in 2004, U.S. politicians attributed the incident to a few bad apples in the American military, exonerated high-ranking members of the George W. Bush administration, promoted Guantánamo as a model prison, and dismissed the illegality of the CIA's use of "enhanced interrogation." By the end of the Bush administration, members of both major congressional parties had come to denounce enhanced interrogation as torture and argue for the closing of Guantánamo. What initiated this shift? In Talking About Torture, Jared Del Rosso reviews transcripts from congressional hearings and scholarship on denial, torture, and state violence to document this wholesale change in rhetoric and attitude toward the use of torture by the CIA and the U.S. military during the War on Terror. He plots the evolution of the "torture issue" in U.S. politics and its manipulation by politicians to serve various ends. Most important, Talking About Torture integrates into the debate about torture the testimony of those who suffered under American interrogation practices and demonstrates how the conversation continues to influence current counterterrorism policies, such as the reliance on drones.
