Book excerpt: What My Daughter Wore is Brooklyn artist Jenny Williams' original collection ofintimate and playful drawings capturing the inspired, offbeat, and whimsical sartorialchoices of girls in the fleeting years between childhood and young adulthood. Withher daughter Clementine as her original muse-but also inspired by her daughter'sfriends-Jenny depicts a unique moment in a girl's life, when self-expression andindividuality trump trends and the impulse to conform. From a dress borrowed from mom worn over vintage pants handed down by a bigbrother, to a Dr. Who T-shirt paired with a flouncy knee-length skirt, the girls of WhatMy Daughter Wore are dressing only for themselves and discovering the power andjoy of their own tastes and style. What My Daughter Wore is a celebration andsnapshot of the uniqueness and creativity of the girls, the tween years, and of coursethe clothes. The What My Daughter Wore project began in Williams' Williamsburg loft, where herlive/work artist's studio had gradually morphed into a setting familiar to every parent-ahome overrun by her three kids and their many friends. Faced with diminishing spaceto paint, she turned to drawing, taking advantage of the ready inspiration the kidsprovided. The resulting drawings combine the straightforward documentary quality ofa street-style blog with the immediacy and emotion of the portraits that fill Jenny'shundreds of private sketchbooks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this adaptation of a Texas folk song, the illustrations show the story of Katy Bear's birthday party, while the repetitive verses are a catalog of what the guests wore. . . . The pictures pick up color as the guests arrive and the activities get livelier. To further focus attention on color, the words are printed in boxed insets of the appropriate hue. . . . The music-a simple, singable tune-is printed at the end. The subject and the highly predictable pattern of text have appeal for just-beginning readers as well as for preschool listeners and singers."-Language Arts

Book Princesses Wear Pants

Download or read book Princesses Wear Pants written by Savannah Guthrie and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From NBC’s TODAY coanchor Savannah Guthrie and educator Allison Oppenheim comes an empowering fairy tale with a twist. In the tradition of Not All Princesses Dress in Pink and Princess in Black, Princesses Wear Pants follows the unflappable Princess Penelope Pineapple, who knows how to get the job done while staying true to herself. Princess Penelope lives in a beautiful palace with a closet full of beautiful dresses. But being a princess is much, much more than beauty. In fact, every morning Princess Penelope runs right past her frilly dresses to choose from her beloved collection of pants! What she wears each day depends on which job she has to do. Will she command the royal air force sporting her sequined flight suit? Will she find her zen in her yoga pants and favorite tee? Or, will she work in the kingdom’s vegetable garden with pocketed overalls for all of her tools? Unfortunately for Princess Penelope, not everyone in the Pineapple Kingdom thinks pants are always appropriate princess attire. When the grand Lady Busyboots demands that Princess Penelope must wear a gown to the annual Pineapple Ball, the young royal finds a clever way to express herself. Penelope’s courage (and style choices) result in her saving the day! In their debut children’s picture book, Savannah Guthrie and Allison Oppenheim team up for a savvy and imaginative story that celebrates fashion and girl power. Perfect for fans of Nickelodeon’s Nella the Princess Knight, Princesses Wear Pants challenges gender stereotypes in the name of individuality, showing girls it’s not how they look but what they do that matters.

Having recently graduated from Columbia Journalism School and landed her dream job at 20/20, the last thing twenty-seven-year-old Geralyn expects to hear is a breast cancer diagnosis. And there is one part of the diagnosis that no one will discuss with her: what it means to be a young woman with cancer in a beauty-obsessed culture. Trying to find herself while losing her vibrancy and her looks, Geralyn embarks on a road of self-acceptance that will inspire all women. Although her story is explicitly about a period of time when she was driven by fear and uncertainty, Geralyn managed a transformation that will encourage all women under siege to discover their own courage and beauty. The important and outrageous lessons of Why I Wore Lipstick come fast and furious with the same gusto that Geralyn has learned to bring to every aspect of her life.

  • Pages : 409 pages

Download or read book She Wore a Yellow Dress written by John Cammidge and published by Gatekeeper Press. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JOHN is brought up on an isolated farm near York, spends his spare time birdwatching, lives with an unsympathetic stepfather and loving mother, and attends Hull University as the government pays his expenses. He worries about serious relationships with girls and has no idea of what career to follow. His experience so far is as a farm hand and a hospital porter. A letter he finds at home confirms his biological father is alive but has no intention of helping him. On Bonfire Night 1965 (Guy Fawkes Night), during his final undergraduate year, he meets a fellow student, JEAN-LOUISE, and a romantic relationship develops. In many ways she is different from John; she is a town girl, brought up by loving parents, is an only child, has opposing politics and knows what she wants to be – a fashion buyer for Marks & Spencer. The obstacle is her mother is ill with muscular dystrophy and she must help take care of her parents. She surprises John by encouraging his birdwatching. John joins Ford of Britain as a graduate trainee and after an uncertain start, is placed in industrial relations and decides to study for a graduate degree with the Institute of Personnel Management. He also discovers more about his real father. What happens to the couple during the subsequent 10 years as they navigate their careers, have to deal with events that take place in Britain during the period and manage personal issues at home, are the subjects of this book. There is panic buying during the 1974, 3-day working week, the affects on home life of Britain's entry into the Common Market, annual inflation driven above 25 percent in part because of trade union militancy, and many other national incidents. A unique feature of the novel is the use of bird species to illustrate human behavior and character. At the end of each chapter there is an illustration of the featured bird from that chapter to provide a summary of the bird's appearance and habitat in case the reader is interested. The novel blends British history, ornithology, success at work, discrimination against women and the challenges of home life into a single story.

Book You Haven t Asked About My Wedding Or What I Wore

Download or read book You Haven t Asked About My Wedding Or What I Wore written by Jana Harris and published by University of Alaska Press. This book was released on 2014-10-15 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During more than thirty years of reading reminiscences, diaries, and letters of forgotten North American pioneer women, poet Jana Harris noticed one narrative recurring time and again: the most powerful memory these women had was often either their courtship and wedding, or the courtship and wedding of a family member. While these young women, who most likely hauled water in a wooden bucket from creek to house and then wore her knees raw scrubbing splintery floors (if she was lucky enough to live in a home that had a floor), dreamed of a fine wedding, it was sometimes with a man they hardly knew. Harris captures the hope, anxiety, anger, and despair of these women through a variety of voices and poetic strategies. Based on interviews of 19th century frontier women conducted during the 1920 s and 30 s, the voices and images of these powerful women speak: Nowhere / on these parchment leaves do I find / myself, my likeness, my name, / not a whisper "Cynthia" not one / breath of me. Sculpted out of years of research and accompanied by archival photographs, these poems imagine the memoirs of forgotten frontier women and children. "
