Book What Matters and Who Matters to Young People Leaving Care

Download or read book What Matters and Who Matters to Young People Leaving Care written by Peter Appleton and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2024-03-28 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The EPDF and EPUB are available open access under a CC-BY-NC-ND licence. This publication was supported by the University of Essex's open access fund. How do young people transitioning from care plan their future lives? Planning is usually thought of as requiring clear goals and ‘future orientation’, but how might planning be regarded by young people whose wishes, hopes, and plans have been repeatedly dashed? In this book Peter Appleton builds on research interviews with care-experienced young adults, and on cross-disciplinary theories of planning and of emotions, to develop a creative and non-dogmatic three-aspects model of planning for young people leaving care. A valuable resource for practitioners, researchers, and educators, this book puts forward a powerful case to think more broadly and flexibly about transition planning with care-leavers, placing the voices of young people at its heart.

Book Care matters

  • Publisher : The Stationery Office
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN : 0101693222
  • Pages : 128 pages

Download or read book Care matters written by and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2006 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although outcomes for children in care have improved in recent years, there remains a significant and widening gap between these and the outcomes for all children. The childhood and adolescence of many of the 60,000 children in care at any one time is often characterised by insecurity, ill-health and lack of fulfilment, resulting in the fact that they are over-represented in a range of vulnerable groups, including the homeless, teenage parents, young offenders and prisoners, those not in post-16 education, employment or training, and drug users. This Green Paper from the Department for Education and Skills sets out a series of proposals which seek to address this situation by reforming both the way the care system works for children and the quality of experience they receive. Proposals include: an improved placements system with the focus on expanding the number and quality of foster carers; powers for local authorities to direct schools to admit children in care, even where the school is fully subscribed; pilot schemes to allow young people to continue to live with foster carers up to the age of 21 years; introduction of a national bursary for young people in care going to university; regular Ofsted inspections of how each local authority is meeting the educational needs of children in care; better support to prevent exclusions of children in care; and enhanced entitlement to free school transport to ensure children do not have to change school when they change placement. The closing date for responses to this consultation document is 15 January 2007, either sent by email to: [email protected] or by post to: Consultation Unit, Area 1A, Castle View House, East Lane, Runcorn, Cheshire WA7 2GJ. A series of focus groups and workshops will be held throughout the consultation period to consider views on the Green Paper, and four working groups of interested stakeholders are being set up in order to explore issues in more detail (under the headings of the future of the care population, social care pratices, placement reform, and best practice in schools) which will report to the DfES in Spring 2007.

Book Mentoring for Young People in Care and Leaving Care

Download or read book Mentoring for Young People in Care and Leaving Care written by Bernadine Brady and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-06 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mentoring for Young People in Care and Leaving Care offers a rich exploration of the theory, research and practice relating to youth mentoring as a means of essential social support. Brady, Dolan and McGregor ground their work on the premise that the informal social support provided through a high-quality mentoring relationship can help young people in care to sustain positive mental health, cope with stress and fulfil their potential through adolescence and into adulthood. It provides an up-to-date synthesis of research findings in relation to natural mentoring, formal mentoring and youth-initiated mentoring for children in care and explores the challenges and considerations relating to practice in this area. Illustrated with the details of original research with care-experienced young people, it offers much-needed insight into how young people interpret and make sense of their experiences in care and of mentoring. Written to be accessible by those with limited knowledge of youth mentoring, this timely publication will be essential reading for academics, policy makers and practitioners in the fields of adolescent development, social care, social work and youth work.

Book Young People Transitioning from Out of Home Care

Download or read book Young People Transitioning from Out of Home Care written by Philip Mendes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges and revises existing ways of thinking about leaving care policy, practice and research at regional, national and international levels. Bringing together contributors from fifteen countries, it covers a range of topical policy and practice issues within national, international or comparative contexts. These include youth justice, disability, access to higher education, the role of advocacy groups, ethical challenges and cultural factors. In doing so it demonstrates that, whilst young people are universally a vulnerable group, there are vast differences in their experiences of out-of-home care and transitions from care, and their shorter and longer-term outcomes. Equally, there are significant variations between jurisdictions in terms of the legislative, policy and practice supports and opportunities made available to them. This significant edited collection is essential reading for all those who work with young people from care, including social workers, counsellors, and youth and community practitioners, as well as for students and scholars of child welfare.

Book EBOOK Parents Children Young People And The State

Download or read book EBOOK Parents Children Young People And The State written by Sandra Shaw and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2010-01-16 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an exploration of the social policies and practices of the Blair and Brown-led Labour governments in relation to families, children and young people in the United Kingdom. Although not a commentary solely on the policies of New Labour, the book examines Labour's 'Third Way', by widening out the debate to consider family welfare policies in the context of the European Union, globalization and international policy groups such as UNICEF. Within the UK, the Every Child Matters policy agenda provides a context for the areas considered. While there has been considerable improvement in the lives of many children and young people during this period, there have also been many headlines about abuse and failures of the care system. Moreover, the UK is still below the average in terms of child poverty within Europe, and the well-being of children and young people is of concern. The author has taken a rigorous look at policy developments during this period focusing on key areas such as: Health and well-being Child Poverty Risks, rights and responsibilities Young people being 'a risk' and 'at risk' Youth homelessness Looked after children Parents, Children, Young People and the State provides an accessible analysis of this key area for students, lecturers, researchers and policy makers with an interest in the well-being of children and young people now and in the future.

Download or read book Looked after Children written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Children, Schools and Families Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Care Matters White Paper (Cm. 7137, 2007, ISBN 9780101713726) and the resultant Children and Young Persons Act 2008 (ISBN 9780105423089) showed the priority the Government has put on improving outcomes for looked-after children. But the Committee cautions that success will not flow automatically from new legislation or guidance. Previous programmes of substantial reform and investment have left outcomes for looked-after children still lagging unacceptably far behind those for other children. Inconsistency in practice and underperformance against current standards show that there are significant underlying challenges to implementation of the new raft of measures. The report examines the crucial elements of: relationships - stable reliable bonds with key individuals are fundamental to children's security and development; placements - are in short supply and local authorities need more support to increase availability; the performance framework - the quality of decision-making, of relationships, and of children's experiences of care. Three themes run through the Committee's conclusions. First is the importance of a well-trained, fairly paid, well-supported workforce in delivering the care. Secondly is how local authorities can come to approximate more closely the care of birth parents. Thirdly, there is the voice of the child and more independent support is needed for children to express their views. The care system should not be seen as a sanction against failing parents, nor blight children's future prospects. Care must be an integral part of a continuum of effective family support services for families under stress and not functioning well. Parents should expect that children in care will have stability and personalised attention rather than a life ruled by uncertainty and bureaucracy and will have access to all the health and therapeutic care that they need to enjoy life and develop into independent adults.
