Book What Life Means to Me Masterpiece Collection

Download or read book What Life Means to Me Masterpiece Collection written by Jack London and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was born in the working-class. Early I discovered enthusiasm, ambition, and ideals; and to satisfy these became the problem of my child-life. My environment was crude and rough and raw. I had no outlook, but an uplook rather. My place in society was at the bottom. Here life offered nothing but sordidness and wretchedness, both of the flesh and the spirit; for here flesh and spirit were alike starved and tormented.Above me towered the colossal edifice of society, and to my mind the only way out was up. Into this edifice I early resolved to climb. Up above, men wore black clothes and boiled shirts, and women dressed in beautiful gowns. Also, there were good things to eat, and there was plenty to eat. This much for the flesh. Then there were the things of the spirit. Up above me, I knew, were unselfishnesses of the spirit, clean and noble thinking, keen intellectual living. I knew all this because I read “Seaside Library” novels, in which, with the exception of the villains and adventuresses, all men and women thought beautiful thoughts, spoke a beautiful tongue, and performed glorious deeds. In short, as I accepted the rising of the sun, I accepted that up above me was all that was fine and noble and gracious, all that gave decency and dignity to life, all that made life worth living and that remunerated one for his travail and misery. But it is not particularly easy for one to climb up out of the working-class—especially if he is handicapped by the possession of ideals and illusions. I lived on a ranch in California, and was hard put to find the ladder whereby to climb. I early inquired the rate of interest on invested money, and worried my child's brain into an understanding of the virtues and excellences of that remarkable invention of man, compound interest. Further, I ascertained the current rates of wages for workers of all ages, and the cost of living. From all this data I concluded that if I began immediately and worked and saved until I was fifty years of age, I could then stop working and enter into participation in a fair portion of the delights and goodnesses that would then be open to me higher up in society. Of course, I resolutely determined not to marry, while I quite forgot to consider at all that great rock of disaster in the working-class world—sickness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you feel like you are alone in your grief? Her Grief Was Heard is a unique approach to a devotional using diary entries from Cady's journal after she lost her husband at age 24. The author doesn't shy away from hard questions she struggles with during her grief process. The candid dialogue between the young widow and God are not only emotionally validating for any reader, but also show that no emotion is too dark or ugly for God. Don't be surprised if you see chapters titled by questions you wanted to ask God but felt too afraid to say them. As Cady vulnerably wrestles with her questions and raw emotions, she finds one thing that is irreplaceable- hope. We believe you will too. Each chapter is woven in Scripture that will tenderly comfort your grieving soul. And in each chapter, you will find that there is only One who can pick up the pieces of your broken heart.

Book excerpt: A lawyer for the Big Bad Wolf earnestly pleads his clients innocence in court. Mother Earth and Father Sky give birth to a rebellious child whose fiery temper threatens to destroy the world. A teenage boy discovers the complexities of fame after his bands first album skyrockets to the top of the charts. Tornado warnings turn a young girls routine babysitting job into a fight for survival. These are just a few of the imaginative, daring, and thought-provoking stories found in these pages. Also included are dozens of poems and personal essays exploring everything from travel to friendship, love to loss, fear to hope. What makes this book truly unique is it was written entirely by kids and teenagers. Dancing with the Pen features the work of more than sixty young writers in elementary school, middle school and high school. These authors come from all across the United States, from California to New York, from Kentucky to Michigan, as well as from abroad: Singapore, Canada, New Zealand. However, the themes and situations they explore transcend hometowns, backgrounds and cultures they are familiar to us all. Dancing with the Pen is a book for young writers and young readers and the young at heart. Even if you are not normally a voracious reader, this book is still for you. Every piece within these covers is written by someone who understands what it is like to be a young person today. Maybe you will recognize yourself in these pages. Perhaps you will even be inspired to pick up a pen, step out on the dance floor, and go for a whirl yourself.
