Download or read book What It s Like Living On The Street written by Forest Sanquenetti and published by . This book was released on 2021-06-26 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most of us, homelessness is unimaginable. We take for granted that we'll be able to meet our daily needs of safety, food, shelter, and companionship without facing incredible obstacles. But every day, thousands of people awake in every region of the world and build their lives despite the challenges of living without shelter or a regular address. Gus Beatty, shortly before he died from another overdose, told me to write this book. Gus Beatty ended every sentence with "bottom line, not for nuttin ́ ". " Ritchie " he said to me a week before he died from another overdose, "You see so much on these streets - you do it differently, you gotta tell the stories and about the love - bottom line, not for nuttin ́". The work is about J-O-E who passed around her newborn to anyone in the soup kitchen who wanted to hold the child, wanting him to get used to strangers, " just in case". She died in the streets, hit by a car. About Pit Bull, the three hundred pounds shaved-headed hood who risked his life taking charge at the scene of an accident. About my psychotic friend who picketed the restaurant with the sign " RAT FECES FOUND IN LEO'S FOOD ". About the three old man -Winkin, Blinkin, and Nod - who held on to the streets for dear life and " sailed off in a wooden shoe ". And others. A street social worker writes.

Part of this new recognition stems from the problem's prevalence: the number of homeless individuals, while hard to pin down exactly, is rising. In light of this, Congress asked the Institute of Medicine to find out whether existing health care programs were ignoring the homeless or delivering care to them inefficiently. This book is the report prepared by a committee of experts who examined these problems through visits to city slums and impoverished rural areas, and through an analysis of papers written by leading scholars in the field.

Book excerpt: Life on the Streets: Stories of the Homeless is a heart-wrenching book on the realities of what it's like to be homeless, told through interviews with people living on the streets. It is essential reading for anyone who has ever been stirred by the plight of the homeless or troubled about this monumental problem in our country. Obie Oliver has interacted with countless unhoused people over the last few decades and has recently documented one hundred stories so that we can better understand this complicated issue. He has given us access to first-hand accounts that will stir your compassion and inspire you to see the humanity that has been stripped away from these "invisible" souls. This book sheds light on how people end up in this unfortunate predicament and provides insight from the author on how we should respond. "Embracing biases and buying into negative stereotypes by passing judgement, in thoughts or words, on the downtrodden is harmful not only to the homeless, but to the ones perpetuating the myth. Harboring a closed mindset about this population fruits a chasm that makes it easier or even improperly justifiable not to bridge." Oliver calls us to have the courage to embrace the homeless and see our interconnectedness. He suggests that by lifting up these individuals that we not only strengthen them and us, but also all of humanity. This is a truly moving and unique book. It is highly recommended for all members of the human community.

In this sweeping narrative, Elliott weaves the story of Dasani’s childhood with the history of her ancestors, tracing their passage from slavery to the Great Migration north. As Dasani comes of age, New York City’s homeless crisis has exploded, deepening the chasm between rich and poor. She must guide her siblings through a world riddled by hunger, violence, racism, drug addiction, and the threat of foster care. Out on the street, Dasani becomes a fierce fighter “to protect those who I love.” When she finally escapes city life to enroll in a boarding school, she faces an impossible question: What if leaving poverty means abandoning your family, and yourself? A work of luminous and riveting prose, Elliott’s Invisible Child reads like a page-turning novel. It is an astonishing story about the power of resilience, the importance of family and the cost of inequality—told through the crucible of one remarkable girl. Winner of the J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize • Finalist for the Bernstein Award and the PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award

This book was released on 2018-07-11 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic homelessness is a highly complex social problem of national importance. The problem has elicited a variety of societal and public policy responses over the years, concomitant with fluctuations in the economy and changes in the demographics of and attitudes toward poor and disenfranchised citizens. In recent decades, federal agencies, nonprofit organizations, and the philanthropic community have worked hard to develop and implement programs to solve the challenges of homelessness, and progress has been made. However, much more remains to be done. Importantly, the results of various efforts, and especially the efforts to reduce homelessness among veterans in recent years, have shown that the problem of homelessness can be successfully addressed. Although a number of programs have been developed to meet the needs of persons experiencing homelessness, this report focuses on one particular type of intervention: permanent supportive housing (PSH). Permanent Supportive Housing focuses on the impact of PSH on health care outcomes and its cost-effectiveness. The report also addresses policy and program barriers that affect the ability to bring the PSH and other housing models to scale to address housing and health care needs.

Book excerpt: Vienna and its Secessionist movement at the turn of the last century is the focus of this extraordinary social portrait told through an eminent Viennese family, headed by Hermine and Moriz Gallia, who were among the great patrons of early-twentieth-century Viennese culture at its peak. Good Living Street takes us from the Gallias’ middle-class prosperity in the provinces of central Europe to their arrival in Vienna, following the provision of Emperor Franz Joseph in 1848 that gave Jews freedom of movement and residence, legalized their religious services, opened public service and professions up to them, and allowed them to marry. The Gallias, like so many hundreds of thousands of others, came from across the Hapsburg Empire to Vienna, and for the next two decades the city that became theirs was Europe’s center of art, music, and ideas. The Gallias lived beyond the Ringstrasse in Vienna’s Fourth District on the Wohllebengasse (translation: Good Living Street), named after Vienna’s first nineteenth-century mayor. In this extraordinary book we see the amassing of the Gallias’ rarefied collections of art and design; their cosmopolitan society; we see their religious life and their efforts to circumvent the city’s rampant anti-Semitism by the family’s conversion to Catholicism along with other prominent intellectual Jews, among them Gustav Mahler. While conversion did not free Jews from anti-Semitism, it allowed them to secure positions otherwise barred to them. Two decades later, as Kristallnacht raged and Vienna burned, the Gallias were having movers pack up the contents of their extraordinary apartment designed by Josef Hoffmann. The family successfully fled to Australia, bringing with them the best private collection of art and design to escape Nazi Austria; included were paintings, furniture, three sets of silver cutlery, chandeliers, letters, diaries, books and bookcases, furs—chinchilla, sable, sealskin—and even two pianos, one upright and one Steinway. Not since the publication of Carl Schorske’s acclaimed portrait of Viennese modernism, Fin-de-Siècle Vienna, has a book so brilliantly—and completely—given us this kind of close-up look at turn-of-the-last-century Viennese culture, art, and daily life—when the Hapsburg Empire was fading and modernism and a new order were coming to the fore. Good Living Street re-creates its world, atmosphere, people, energy, and spirit, and brings it all to vivid life.
