Things get a little salty down in the bayou... Cajun country is the last bastion of true American regional cooking, and no one knows it better than Isaac Toups. Now the chef of the acclaimed Toups' Meatery and Toups South in New Orleans, he grew up deep in the Atchafalaya Basin of Louisiana, where his ancestors settled 300 years ago. There, hunting and fishing trips provide the ingredients for communal gatherings, and these shrimp and crawfish boils, whole-hog boucheries, fish frys, and backyard cookouts -- form the backbone of this book. Taking readers from the backcountry to the bayou, Toups shows how to make: A damn fine gumbo, boudin, dirty rice, crabcakes, and cochon de lait His signature double-cut pork chop and the Toups Burger And more authentic Cajun specialties like Hopper Stew and Louisiana Ditch Chicken. Along the way, he tells you how to engineer an on-the-fly barbecue pit, stir up a dark roux in only 15 minutes, and apply Cajun ingenuity to just about everything. Full of salty stories, a few tall tales, and more than 100 recipes that double down on flavor, Chasing the Gator shows how -- and what it means -- to cook Cajun food today.

Book Lost Man s River

  • Author : Peter Matthiessen
  • Publisher : Vintage
  • Release : 1998-09-29
  • ISBN : 067973564X
  • Pages : 562 pages

Download or read book Lost Man s River written by Peter Matthiessen and published by Vintage. This book was released on 1998-09-29 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the few American writers ever nominated for the National Book Award for both fiction and nonfiction presents the second novel in his Watson trilogy. Lucius Watson is obsessed with learning the truth about his father. Who was E. J. Watson? Was he a devoted family man, an inspired farmer, a man of progress and vision? Or was he a cold-blooded murderer and amoral opportunist? Were his neighbors driven to kill him out of fear? Or was it envy? And if Watson was a killer, should the neighbors fear the obsessed Lucius when he returns to live among them and ask questions? The characters in this tale are men and women molded by the harsh elements of the Florida Everglades—an isolated breed, descendants of renegades and pioneers, who have only their grit, instinct, and tradition to wield against the obliterating forces of twentieth-century progress: Speck Daniels, moonshiner and alligator poacher turned gunrunner; Sally Brown, who struggles to escape the racism and shame of her local family; R. B. Collins, known as Chicken, crippled by drink and rage, who is the custodian of Watson secrets: Watson Dyer, the unacknowledged namesake with designs on the remote Watson homestead hidden in the wild rivers; and Henry Short, a black man and unwilling member of the group of armed island men who awaited E. J. Watson in the silent twilight. Only a storyteller of Peter Matthiessen’s dazzling artistry could capture the beauty and strangeness of life on this lawless frontier while probing deeply into its underlying tragedy: the brutal destruction of the land in the name of progress, and the racism that infects the heart of New World history. A story of epic scope and ambition, Lost Man’s River confronts the primal relationship between a dangerous father and his desperate sons and the ways in which his death has shaped their lives.

Wuerffel gives his many fans a first-time reflection into a variety of topics, including his relationship with Steve Spurrier, his rivalry with Peyton Manning, and how his strong Christian beliefs shaped his football career. Along with award-winning sports columnist and coauthor Mike Bianchi, he replays the big games from each of his four magnificent seasons, talks about the quarterback controversies and quandaries, discusses faith and football, compares Spurrier and Bobby Bowden, and takes readers on a glorious trip that starts with a recruiting visit to Gainesville and culminates with an incredible national championship victory over Florida State in New Orleans. Danny Wuerffel's Tales from the Gator Swamp will take readers on a delightful journey back to the "good old days" of the 1990s, when Spurrier's funning and gunning and cunning style of offense revolutionized the Southeastern Conference. After reading this book, fans will understand why Danny Wuerffel collected as much admiration and as many accolades as perhaps any player in the proud history of college football.

Book Stories About Life on the Farm

Download or read book Stories About Life on the Farm written by Jessie Gussman and published by Jessie Gussman. This book was released on 2024-04-10 with total page 747 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hey, Everyone! I’m Jessie Gussman and I write love stories. I guess some people think that a writer’s life is glamorous. Especially a romance writer. This book was written to disabuse that notion. I’m kidding. That’s not the purpose of this book, although it’s a definite effect. It’s true that I’m a USA Today bestselling author, which, I have to admit, surprises me as much as anyone. My husband and I also own a trucking company. We have two twenty thousand bird free-range laying houses (our eggs are probably in your grocery store!), raise grass-fed beef cattle, homeschool our kids and are on a first-name basis with the Game Warden and the state police (mostly because of the kids and not really my husband). I frequently cook for strangers, occasionally hide from my family and own more fire extinguishers than the average person (for good reason). Sometimes, when I sit down at my computer, instead of writing the next chapter in my latest romance, I write about my life. Sometimes it’s fun. Sometimes funny. Sometimes it’s heartbreaking and sometimes you just see life through the eyes of a farmer, growing older every day and maybe just a little wiser. We do a lot of laughing, some crying and every day is a learning experience wrapped in the love of God and held in His hand. That’s what I share with you in this book. Thanks so much for spending some time with me today! Love, Jessie Reviews for Stories from Jessie Gussman's Newsletter: ★★★★★ "Jessie is an author that can make getting bunted by a cow or helping a cow have a calf interesting and educational.
