Book What is Spiritism

Download or read book What is Spiritism written by Allan Kardec and published by EDICEI of America. This book was released on 2010 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A work that is still up-to-date, What is Spiritism? is useful for adherents of the Spiritist Doctrine as well as for those who want to understand the nature of Spiritism and its fundamental points. Kardec's logic and common sense are obvious in this book as he confounds Spiritism's detractors while answering the questions of those who believe in and aspire to a superior life. The book is divided into three chapters. The first is composed of dialogues between Kardec and a critic, a skeptic and a priest, providing answers to those who do not understand the basic principles of Spiritism. It also presents appropriate refutations to its opponents. The second chapter presents practical and experimental aspects of the science and is a kind of summary of The Mediums' Book. The third chapter is a short synthesis of The Spirits' Book, with solutions to psychological, moral and philosophical problems according to the Spiritist Doctrine. In addition, the book is prefaced with an abridged version of Henri Sausse's biography of Allan Kardec."--

Book Talking to the Other Side

Download or read book Talking to the Other Side written by Todd Jay Leonard and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its birth in 1848, Spiritualism as a religion, science, and philosophy has experienced great highs and lows. At the center of this purely American-made modern-religious movement are "mediums"--the people who are able to communicate, in some way, with spirit entities that are no longer on the earth plane. Based on three years of on-site investigation, and a plethora of data and research collected on the modern Spiritualist movement in America, Talking to the Other Side focuses upon the ethno-religious aspects of the religion, mediumship, and the mediums themselves. The first four chapters offer an expansive review of the history of religion in America, mediumship, and the Spiritualist movement. Chapters 5-7 comprise the research and data that were compiled and analyzed based on fieldwork analysis, a comprehensive questionnaire, personal interviews, and published literature on the topic of Spiritualism and mediumship. According to Spiritualist mediums, "people don't die, bodies do." Talking to the Other Side offers a contemporary look into the lives and backgrounds of the mediums who bridge this world and the Spirit world, connecting those who have passed over with those they left behind.

Book Who Are These Spiritualists and What Has Spiritualism Done for the World Classic Reprint

Download or read book Who Are These Spiritualists and What Has Spiritualism Done for the World Classic Reprint written by J. M. Peebles and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Who Are These Spiritualists, and What Has Spiritualism Done for the World? Over the porral of the Temple of Sais, said Iamblicus, "was inscribed these words, - 'I am all that has been, and shall be; and my peplum, or vail, no mortal hath yet withdrawn." "Man dieth, wasteth away, giveth up the ghost, and where is he?" was an Old Testament writer's inquiry. The thought of immortality was ever before the minds of the ancients, and measurably unanswered. They saw through a glass darkly; but thanks to God and the good angels, Spiritualism has lifted and drawn aside that 'vail, ' demonstrating a future, conscious existence, and thereby intimately acquainting us with the conditions and occupations of those whose bodies are wasting away beneath the grasses and the weeping willows of the valley. "Have any of the scribes and the Pharisees believed on Him," the Nazarene? was the common question in the city of Jerusalem, in Galilee, and the regions beyond Jordan in the early days of that inspired man and martyr of Palestine. Human nature, whether Turanian, Semitic or Aryanic, is the same in all ages. The masses seek fame, pelf, power. The ever-recurring question of this materialistic generation is not - is this demonstrated fact of a future life true - is this newly conceived truth that invisible intelligences exist and communicate with us really true? - but, is it respectable, is it popular, have the churches - have the Pharisees of fashion accepted it? Do the rich and aristrocatic patronize it? Such is largely the poor, piteous obliquity of to-day's mental and religious condition. Book Supernatural Entertainments

Download or read book Supernatural Entertainments written by Simone Natale and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Supernatural Entertainments, Simone Natale vividly depicts spiritualism’s rise as a religious and cultural phenomenon and explores its strong connection to the growth of the media entertainment industry in the nineteenth century. He frames the spiritualist movement as part of a new commodity culture that changed how public entertainments were produced and consumed. Starting with the story of the Fox sisters, considered the first spiritualist mediums in history, Natale follows the trajectory of spiritualism in Great Britain and the United States from its foundation in 1848 to the beginning of the twentieth century. He demonstrates that spiritualist mediums and leaders adopted many of the promotional strategies and spectacular techniques that were being developed for the broader entertainment industry. Spiritualist mediums were indistinguishable from other professional performers, as they had managers and agents, advertised in the press, and used spectacularism to draw audiences. Addressing the overlap between spiritualism’s explosion and nineteenth-century show business, Natale provides an archaeology of how the supernatural became a powerful force in the media and popular culture of today.

Book Lights and Shadows of Spiritualism

Download or read book Lights and Shadows of Spiritualism written by Daniel Dunglas Home and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scottish spiritualist DANIEL DUNGLAS HOME (1833-1886) may well have been the most famous celebrity medium of the Victorian world, his hundreds of sances attended by some of the biggest names of his day. Though not everyone was a fan-Robert Brownings' 1864 poem "Sludge the Medium" is a thorough lashing of Home-he remains renowned to this day for never having been exposed as a fraud. It's ironic, then, that this 1877 book, is best remembered for Home's exposing of the "false prophets" and phony mediums of his day. But that doesn't come until the first third of the work. In Part I, Home explores the spiritualism of the world's oldest civilization, from the faiths of the first pagans to the spiritualist beliefs of ancient Greece and Rome. And in Part II, he discusses spiritualism in the Jewish and Christian eras, including the spiritualism of the Bible and the great seers of recent centuries. Modern paranormal debunker James Randi has noted one instance of the medium's dishonesty: though published under his own name, both this book and Home's 1864 "autobiography," Incidents in My Life, were in fact ghostwritten by Home's lawyer, W. M. Wilkinson. Whether Home was a fraud or not, though, this remains a fascinating, is biased, history of spiritualism.

Book Waking the Witch

Download or read book Waking the Witch written by Pam Grossman and published by Gallery Books. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the podcast host of The Witch Wave and practicing witch Pam Grossman—who Vulture has dubbed the “Terry Gross of witches”—comes an exploration of the world’s fascination with witches, why they have intrigued us for centuries and why they’re more relevant now than ever. When you think of a witch, what do you picture? Pointy black hat, maybe a broomstick. But witches in various guises have been with us for millennia. In Waking the Witch, Pam Grossman explores the impact of the world’s most magical icon. From the idea of the femme fatale in league with the devil to the bewitching pop culture archetypes in Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Harry Potter; from the spooky ladies in fairy tales to the rise of contemporary witchcraft, witches reflect the power and potential of women. Part cultural analysis, part memoir, Waking the Witch traces the author’s own journey on the path to witchcraft, and how this has helped her find self-empowerment and purpose. It celebrates witches past, present, and future, and reveals the critical role they have played—and will continue to play—in the world as we know it. “Deftly illuminating the past while beckoning us towards the future, Waking the Witch has all the makings of a feminist classic. Wise, relatable, and real, Pam Grossman is the witch we need for our times” (Ami McKay, author of The Witches of New York).
