Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Love's Labour Lost Critics have dealt harshly with Love's Labour's Lost, and commentators - it may be for that reason - neglectfully. 'In this play,' says Johnson, 'which all the editors have concurred to censure, and some have rejected as unworthy of our Poet, it must be confessed that there are many passages mean, childish and vulgar; and some which ought not to have been exhibited, as we are told they were, to a maiden queen.' He adds, however, a saving clause - 'But there are scattered, through the whole, many sparks of genius; nor is there any play that has more evident marks of the hand of Shakespeare.' Dryden had classed it, in his Defence of the Epilogue, among the plays 'which were either grounded on impossibilities, or at least so meanly written that the comedy neither caused you mirth nor the serious part your concernment' - relegating, we assume, Love's Labour's Lost to the second of these categories. Hazlitt, the avowed impressionist, confesses, 'If we were to part with any of the author's comedies it would be this.' To the good Gervinus it 'gives the idea of an excessively jocular play': and even to Brandes Shakespeare seems here to bury himself in the follies he attacks and 'is still too inexperienced to realise how he thereby inflicts upon the spectator and the reader the full burden of their tediousness.' All this bewilders us who would, if only for its poetry, rank Love's Labour's Lost well above The Two Gentlemen of Verona or The Comedy of Errors, its nearest competitors among Shakespeare's juvenile efforts. But, though bewildered, we dissent point-blank, and specially from the epithet 'mean.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Four young men (one of them a king) withdraw from the world for three years, taking an oath that they will have nothing to do with women. The King of Navarre soon learns, however, that the Princess of France and her ladies are about to arrive. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: “Love's Labour's Lost (The Unabridged Play) + The Classic Biography: The Life of William Shakespeare” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Love's Labour's Lost is one of William Shakespeare's early comedies, believed to have been written in the mid-1590s and first published in 1598. It follows the King of Navarre and his three companions as they attempt to foreswear the company of women for three years of study and fasting, and their subsequent infatuation with the Princess of Aquitaine and her ladies. In an untraditional ending for a comedy, the play closes with the death of the Princess's father, and all weddings are delayed for a year. Life of William Shakespeare is a biography of William Shakespeare by the eminent critic Sidney Lee. This book was one of the first major biographies of the Bard of Avon. It was published in 1898, based on the article contributed to the Dictionary of National Biography. William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". His extant works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, the authorship of some of which is uncertain. Sir Sidney Lee (1859 – 1926) was an English biographer and critic. He was a lifelong scholar and enthusiast of Shakespeare. His article on Shakespeare in the fifty-first volume of the Dictionary of National Biography formed the basis of his Life of William Shakespeare. This full-length life is often credited as the first modern biography of the poet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from All's Well, That Ends Well There is no external evidence that will enable us to ascertain the date of composition of All'r Well, rbat End: Well within positive limits: in the well-known list of Meres in his Palladi: Tamia of 1598 there is mention of a play called Love's Labour's Won, ' and there are passages in All'r Well which, as well as the general theme of the play, support the conclusion that it is possibly the one referred to. Various critics at different times have tried to identify Love's Labour's Won' with the Taming of tbe Sbrew, the Tempest and M ucb Ada about Natbirzg respectively: but there are grave objections to each of these, and it is now generally admitted that either Love's Labour's Won' has been lost, or that it was the original title of the present play. If the latter alternative is taken, we should be able to assume not only that the play was written before 1598, but also that it followed Love's Labour': Lost at no very great interval. Book excerpt: This play is named after the Twelfth Night holiday of the Christmas season. It was written around 1601 and first published in the First Folio in 1623. Like many of Shakespeare's comedies, this one centers on mistaken identity. The leading character, Viola, is shipwrecked on the shores of Illyria during the opening scenes. She loses contact with her twin brother, Sebastian, whom she believes dead. Posing as a man and masquerading as a young page under the name Cesario, she enters the service of Duke Orsino. Orsino is in love with the bereaved Lady Olivia, whose brother has recently died and decides to use "Cesario" as an intermediary. Olivia, believing Viola to be a man, falls in love with this handsome and eloquent messenger. Viola, in turn, has fallen in love with the Duke, who also believes Viola is a man and who regards her as his confidant.
