Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The perfect tool to teach children how to handle emotions such as feeling scared, anxious, or worried. What Happens When I'm Scared? provides parents, grandparents, teachers, and caregivers the opportunity to speak with children about this important topic. What is fear? What does it feel like? Can feelings of fear be passed on to others? And can they return? In What Happens When I’m Scared?, children take turns listing what scares them. They express their concern over the dark, big dogs, heights, spiders, monsters under the bed, bullies, extreme weather, and speaking in front of others. Through discussing what they fear, they begin to understand why certain places, people, or circumstances make them feel nervous, worried, anxious, scared, or even nauseous. They learn about their body’s biological reactions, both physical and mental. And they determine that it’s absolutely okay to be afraid and that everyone, from babies to grandparents, is scared sometimes. In What Happens When I'm Scared, award-winning author and illustrator Dagmar Geisler draws attention to what could be a sensitive subject to some and provides advice for overcoming fear that will be helpful to young readers as well as those who live and work with them daily, like parents, grandparents, teachers, siblings, and caregivers.

This book was released on 2014-05-05 with total page 1250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The editors have produced a volume that is both comprehensive and concise, meeting the needs of clinicians who prefer a single, user-friendly volume. In the service of brevity, the book focuses on treatment over diagnostic considerations, and addresses both empirically-validated treatments and accumulated clinical wisdom where research is lacking. Noteworthy features include the following: Content is organized according to DSM-5® categories to make for rapid retrieval of relevant treatment information for the busy clinician. Outcome studies and expert opinion are presented in an accessible way to help the clinician know what treatment to use for which disorder, and how to tailor the treatment to the patient. Content is restricted to the major psychiatric conditions seen in clinical practice while leaving out less common conditions and those that have limited outcome research related to the disorder, resulting in a more streamlined and affordable text. Chapters are meticulously referenced and include dozens of tables, figures, and other illustrative features that enhance comprehension and recall. An authoritative resource for psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychiatric nurses, and an outstanding reference for students in the mental health professions, Gabbard's Treatments of Psychiatric Disorders, Fifth Edition, will prove indispensable to clinicians seeking to provide excellent care while transitioning to a DSM-5® world.

You might say you’re introverted or awkward, or that you're fine around friends but just can't speak up in a meeting or at a party. Maybe you're usually confident but have recently moved or started a new job, only to feel isolated and unsure. If you get nervous in social situations—meeting your partner's friends, public speaking, standing awkwardly in the elevator with your boss—you've probably been told, “Just be yourself!” But that's easier said than done—especially if you're prone to social anxiety. Weaving together cutting-edge science, concrete tips, and the compelling stories of real people who have risen above their social anxiety, Dr. Ellen Hendriksen proposes a groundbreaking idea: you already have everything you need to succeed in any unfamiliar social situation. As someone who lives with social anxiety, Dr. Hendriksen has devoted her career to helping her clients overcome the same obstacles she has. With familiarity, humor, and authority, Dr. Hendriksen takes the reader through the roots of social anxiety and why it endures, how we can rewire our brains through our behavior, and—at long last—exactly how to quiet your Inner Critic, the pesky voice that whispers, "Everyone will judge you." Using her techniques to develop confidence, think through the buzz of anxiety, and feel comfortable in any situation, you can finally be your true, authentic self.

  • Author : Charles D. Spielberger
  • Publisher : Academic Press
  • Release : 2013-09-03
  • ISBN : 1483258254
  • Pages : 268 pages

Download or read book Anxiety written by Charles D. Spielberger and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anxiety: Current Trends in Theory and Research, Volume I, seeks to facilitate a more comprehensive understanding of anxiety phenomena. This volume emerged from a symposium on Anxiety: Current Trends in Theory and Research held at Florida State University in the spring of 1970. The symposium brought together persons who have made important contributions to the understanding of anxiety phenomena and provided them with an opportunity to react to each other's ideas. One of the main goals of the symposium was to stimulate confrontation among opposing views with the expectation that this would, at least, provide clarification of terminology and eliminate the semantic confusion plaguing the field. The volume is organized into three parts. Part I presents an overview of the unique theoretical perspective and research objectives with which each contributor has approached the topic of anxiety. It also provides background information and historical perspective for the reader with limited familiarity with this area. Part II contains papers focusing on the nature and measurement of anxiety. Part III deals with the neurophysiological and biochemical aspects of anxiety. This work is intended primarily for psychologists and students of psychology, but it should be of interest to any behavioral or medical scientist concerned with a more comprehensive understanding of personality and psychopathology.

Book The Psychology of Fear and Stress

Download or read book The Psychology of Fear and Stress written by Jeffrey Alan Gray and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1987 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do human emotions arise, what functions do they serve, what is their evolutionary background, how do they relate to behaviour and the brain? These questions are put, and answered, in relation to the emotion of fear in this, the second edition of professor Gray's extremely well known book, first published in 1971. In this edition, the text has been extensively modified and brought up-to-date, but the book maintains the style and general argument of the first edition. The author's approach in this book is from a biological standpoint; he emphasises the evidence that has accumulated from experiments by psychologists, ethologists, physiologists and endocrinologists. Although a lot of this evidence has been obtained from animal studies, it throws light on the psychology and physiology of fear in Man. Differences between individuals in their susceptibility to fear are treated with as much attention as the common factors are.
