In his trademark accessible and thought-provoking style, Mitch Finley offers us a book that explores what faith is not, so that we can understand what faith is. Dispensing with common misconceptions of faith as a way around suffering, a source of secret knowledge, a security blanket, a crutch, a way to escape death, an answer to all questions, a solution to all problems, and an antidote to doubt, Finley helps us make the most of our finite human language in talking about our infinite God. Mixing wisdom from Scripture, tradition, and everyday life with humor and insight, Finley helps us understand faith as a gift that stretches our minds, helps us learn from suffering, motivates us to reach out to those in need, and leads us to more meaningful and joyful living.

Book Every Good Endeavour

Download or read book Every Good Endeavour written by Timothy Keller and published by . This book was released on 2014-07-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's increasingly competitive and insecure economic environment, we often question the reason for work: why am I doing this? Why is it so hard? And what can I do about it? Work may seem just a means to an end: we do it to earn the money to enjoy life outside the workplace. Here, Timothy Keller argues that God's plan is radically more ambitious: he actually created us to work. We are to work together to make the world a better place, to help each other, and so to find purpose for our lives. Our faith should enhance our work, and our work should develop our faith. With deep insight, Timothy Keller draws on essential and relevant biblical wisdom to address our questions about work. There is grace available if we have taken the wrong attitude, idolising money and using our careers to glorify ourselves rather than God. This book provides the foundations for a work-life balance where we can thrive both personally and professionally. Keller shows how through excellence, integrity, discipline, creativity and passion in the workplace we can impact society for good.Developing a better attitude to work releases us to serve others humbly, to worship God everyday, and leaves us deeply fulfilled.

But what happens when all of the things you have heard and embraced through the Word of God to increase your faith, seems to come crumbling down around you? What happens when your prayers are not answered in the manner you desired? How do you deal with the pain caused by the death of a loved one after you have trusted God wholeheartedly to heal them? Has God forsaken you during the time you need him most? How do you deal with your anger towards God? How do you believe again when you feel that God has failed you? In "When Faith is Shattered" you will find how to deal with even the most difficult times of your life; when you feel that the Lord has forsaken you and there is no place else to turn.

Book How Faith Works

Download or read book How Faith Works written by Matt Davis and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006-07-06 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Click this link to read a review of How Faith Works. This book is autobiographical in concept, as the author has had many experiences in life, in addition to his bouts with cancer and his subsequent survival. As the author brings his story to you in this book, his attempt is to present things in a sequence that explain them in the order of importance in his life. The author’s life was riddled with ups and downs from inception, because of the absence of his father and mother, but the best thing that happens to him is that he was raised by his loving and caring grandmother, Mandy. Although many of the situations and experiences he faced existed in his life in Alabama in 1930s, they still exist in African American families and their communities today. As a result, Matt has a keen sense of the value of education, which he learned from his grandmother Mandy and other life experiences during the time he lived in Alabama. Matt’s years as a child growing up in rural Alabama during 1930s-50s, at best was turbulent times for young African American boys, yet he rode horses with his “white friend”, “J”, a White kid that lived nearby at the time. Because of Matt’s faith, taught to him by his grandmother Mandy, he was not afraid to take chances and try new things. At age 19 Matt went to work in Pensacola, Florida. Later that same year, he bought a 1939, pretty green Chevy. Matt was never deterred by life decisions, and still believes it is his faith that has brought him through many ordeals in his life. He has stepped out on “faith”, and prevailed in turning what would have toppled the average big city kid; but not Matt, he turns negatives into positives, and perseveres as he gets up again, and again.
