Book What Ever Happened to Russell City

Download or read book What Ever Happened to Russell City written by Megan Wilkinson and published by . This book was released on 2011-05-09 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russell City, California emerged as a small Danish farming community in the mid-1800s. The demographics of Russell City changed over time, and by the late 1930s African American and Latino American families joined the European settlers' descendents. It was never an incorporated entity, yet Russell City provided some of its own civic services and enjoyed a strong community spirit including a very happening Blues scene. In its latter years, Russell City was considered a blight to the surrounding towns and in 1963 Alameda County began the forced relocation of its tenants, bulldozed the entire community, and rezoned the land into industrial use only. No comprehensive history of Russell City existed at the time of this research. To chronicle the events leading up to the town's demise, I conducted interviews of ex-residents and built an archive of newspaper accounts relating to the city. I also created two maps, one of land ownership circa 1963-1968 and another representing renter and business information. This project is essential to reconstruct Russell City's past and is meant to provide the background data for additional projects that will help secure Russell City's place in history.

Book excerpt: Between 1853 and 1964, on the western shore of what is now the city of Hayward, there existed a small rural community. This pictorial history traces the role that this region, which became known as Russell City, played in the development of the East Bay. Named for Joel Russell, a New England teacher who came to California during the Gold Rush and found success as a judge, political activist, and businessman, Russell City later became a destination point for diverse migrant and immigrant groups including Spaniards, Danes, Germans, Italians, African Americans, and Mexicans. While the economic means of the residents were never great, social riches abounded in the cultural and religious traditions that were practiced. A plan to create an industrial park on Russell City land emerged during the 1950s, and by 1964 the residents and businesses were entirely removed through eminent domain. An annual reunion picnic, begun in 1978, serves as a reminder of the community once built and then tossed to the winds. In the words of the former residents, The city may be gone, but the memories live on.

Book The Death of Russell City

Download or read book The Death of Russell City written by John C. Williams and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-09-28 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1963, John C Cole, landed a position as a Sanitation Organizer II at the Russell City Dumps located in an unincorporated part of Alameda County next to the city of Hayward. Beyond the dumps lay the small town of Russell City. John worked the night shift from Thursday to Monday. On Friday nights he would watch as a constant stream of cars rolled past. He could hear the great rhythm and blues artists of the day jamming, but couldn't see them as the mysterious Russell City was down the railroad tracks just beyond the bend. One night a beautiful woman came to John and asked him to leave his post and take a man who had been shot to the hospital. John refuses, so out of desperation she offers him two hundred dollars. John reluctantly agrees and, for the first time, drives through Russell City. And that began a journey into corruption and greed which found John wrongly accused of murder. The Death of Russell City is a 90,000-word novel about the actual event when, by use of Eminent Domain, arson, and murder, Russell City was turned from a Mecca of rhythm and blues to an industrial park.

Book excerpt: An endlessly entertaining portrait of the city of Amsterdam and the ideas that make it unique, by the author of the acclaimed Island at the Center of the World Tourists know Amsterdam as a picturesque city of low-slung brick houses lining tidy canals; student travelers know it for its legal brothels and hash bars; art lovers know it for Rembrandt's glorious portraits. But the deeper history of Amsterdam, what makes it one of the most fascinating places on earth, is bound up in its unique geography-the constant battle of its citizens to keep the sea at bay and the democratic philosophy that this enduring struggle fostered. Amsterdam is the font of liberalism, in both its senses. Tolerance for free thinking and free love make it a place where, in the words of one of its mayors, "craziness is a value." But the city also fostered the deeper meaning of liberalism, one that profoundly influenced America: political and economic freedom. Amsterdam was home not only to religious dissidents and radical thinkers but to the world's first great global corporation. In this effortlessly erudite account, Russell Shorto traces the idiosyncratic evolution of Amsterdam, showing how such disparate elements as herring anatomy, naked Anabaptists parading through the streets, and an intimate gathering in a sixteenth-century wine-tasting room had a profound effect on Dutch-and world-history. Weaving in his own experiences of his adopted home, Shorto provides an ever-surprising, intellectually engaging story of Amsterdam.
