Book Academic Writing for Military Personnel revised edition

Download or read book Academic Writing for Military Personnel revised edition written by Adam Chapnick and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2023-05-16 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Writing for Military Personnel is a manual for writing clear and effective academic prose. Authored by an experienced writing instructor and a retired military officer, both of whom teach in a professional military education institution, it is designed for members of the armed forces who are entering, or perhaps re-entering, the academic community, and having spent much of their careers either writing in the professional military context or not writing at all. The book not only teaches officers how to write convincingly, but also explains why a sound grasp of academic writing can enhance their effectiveness in their regular duties, particularly as they reach the more senior levels of service. Chapters focus on the value of written communication skills, the difference between professional (staff) and academic writing, the research process, the writing process, academic professionalism, and common writing problems and challenges. A particularly innovative final chapter discusses how officers can use the knowledge that they have acquired through their professional experiences in the academic context. Specific examples – chosen with a military audience in mind – are integrated throughout the text to provide the reader with relevant and practical guidance. The revised edition incorporates new examples from a more diverse set of authors, takes into account recent changes in communication technologies, and reflects new advancements in the scholarship of teaching and learning. As the only comprehensive guide to effective academic writing designed specifically for military personnel, this book will be a crucial addition to the libraries of junior and senior officers in militaries worldwide. Available formats: trade paperback, accessible PDF, and accessible ePub

Book Ovid s Revisions

  • ISBN : 1107657385
  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book Ovid s Revisions written by Francesca K. A. Martelli and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A striking feature of Ovid's literary career derives from the processes of revision to which he subjects the works and collections that make up his oeuvre. From the epigram prefacing the Amores, to the editorial notices built into the book-frames of the Epistulae Ex Ponto, Ovid repeatedly invites us to consider the transformative horizons that these editorial interventions open up for his individual works, and which also affect the shape of his career and authorial identity. Francesca K. A. Martelli plots the vicissitudes of Ovid's distinctive career-long habit, considering how it transforms the relationship between text, oeuvre and authorial voice, and how it relates to the revisory practices at work in the wider cultural and political matrix of Ovid's day. This fascinating study will be of great interest to students and scholars of classical literature, and to any literary critic interested in revision as a mode of authorial self-fashioning.

From what appears to be a discussion of people simply unhappy with political events, a plan to topple the Government of Kenya takes shape.Led by a Professor of Political Science at one of the local universities, a group from across the country's diverse ethnic divide come together and crystalize the coup plan. However, along the way major interests come aboard. The Government of Uganda, the United States and Britain have something in common. They do not like the style and leadership policies of the leader of Kenya. They would be happy to see him give way to a person who is more agreeable to their interests. And so they get involved. However, the approach to effecting the change has to itself change. From a military coup de tat earlier envisaged, the supporters of the change now arrange to force the Kenyan leader to give up power by assassinating many of his leading advisors-the group commonly called the Kitchen Cabinet. Commandoes are recruited from Uganda and come into Kenya through the Mount Elgon forest areas.By the time the masterminds are arrested, it is too late. Things have gotten out of hand. The Ugandan commandos are in full charge and are taking instructions only from their superiors back home.In a fast-changing situation, the best the President can be granted is asylum.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A true-adventure, coming-of-age tale set in the exhilarating first wave of Beatlemania … It’s 1964, and 16-year-old Janice is struggling in a grim foster home in Cleveland when she falls suddenly, deeply in love … with the Beatles. They and their music stir in her an ecstatic new sense of freedom. With a friend, she hatches a bold plan to escape their dreary lives and run away to London to meet the Fab Four. On their own for the first time—in “Beatleland”—they explore a new city, a new culture, and a new life, visiting the hippest clubs of Soho, meeting some nice English boys, hitchhiking to Liverpool … But unbeknownst to them, the runaways have become international news—and a hunt is on. Adventure and newfound freedom end abruptly when Janice is apprehended by London police and hauled home to Cleveland and an unforgiving juvenile justice system. Warned by responsible adults to put it all behind her, she doesn’t speak of her extraordinary adventure for more than fifty years. In this memoir, she looks back with fresh insight on the heady early days of Beatlemania and an era in America when young women exercising some control over their lives presented a serious threat to adult society.

Book Corpus Stylistics in Principles and Practice

Download or read book Corpus Stylistics in Principles and Practice written by Yufang Ho and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-03-17 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Yufang Ho compares the text style difference between the two versions of John Fowles' The Magus, exemplifying the methodological principles and analytic practices of the corpus stylistic approach. The Magus was first published in 1966 and was revised and republished by Fowles in 1977. Fowles' own comment on the second edition was that it was 'rather more than a stylistic revision.' The book explores how the revised version is linguistically different from the original, especially in terms of point of view (re) representation. The corpus stylistic approach adopted combines qualitative and quantitative comparison to confirm the overall text style difference. The analysis demonstrates that computer assisted methods can identify significant linguistic features which literary critics have not noticed and provide a more detailed descriptive basis for literary interpretation of (either edition) of the novel. This analysis of The Magus serves as a case study and exemplar of how corpus techniques may be used generally in the study of linguistics.
